I found some colombian gold bud about two years ago, it was spot on the correctly grown and cured bud, nice light colored nugs that had the spicey slightly thai flavor I recall.

All those old-school strains have been bullshit in my experience. The stuff these kids engineer today are so far superior to most the shit I smoked when I was kid - all those years ago - that I often wonder. Did we have more exotics available? I think so. When I lived in Chicago there was this incredible black hash that supposedly came from Afghanistan, but you know how it goes - just marketing I suspect.
There was this really good reefer that became a superstar that was supposed to be Thai stick. The bud was wrapped like Thai Stick is supposed to be wrapped and it had a nice sugar coating of opium on it. Yeah, it was outstanding and quite rare and undoubtedly exotic, but better than the hitting power and resistance to tolerance build-up that you see in some strains today?
I dunno about that one... I just harvested this stuff yesterday that I am quite pleased with. I made hard rock with the trim using an ethanol extraction that probably yielded 4 grams of pure rock on the first wash. I'll wash some more tomorrow and see if the second pass is any better. The cross was the worst yielding strain I've ever grown - around an ounce a plant which is really pathetic for my garden, but the buds were certainly chippy and fat.
With an added bonus that seems to "haunt" this strain - a cross of Romulan and AK47 back to White Rhino or something (I call it Russian Roulette) - it seems to develop seeds by magic. Not a lot of them as a rule, but it is quite unusual. There are no male plants in the garden - all of the seeds were feminized from the previous run where we had the same issue. No stressed out plants, no boys to be culled. The plants that started were all females and finished as females, yet the calyxes don't lie. Some of them hold a seed.
Why this strain? Because unlike the stuff we smoked ourselves to death on as kids, this stuff has pain killing properties to die for and no sign of tolerance build-up that is coupled with the legendary AK47 true, one-hit power.
How many strains did we have like that as kids? I didn't start smoking pot until I was 17 and then quit when I met my wife when I was 22. The next time I lit up was 20 years later when someone told me pot could kill migraines. Who knew?
Anyway, how many of them out there have all the genetics that we see today? With the plethora of 45 to 55 day strains out there that will render you senseless, low odor, great flavor (even fruity stuff) and high yielding, how can these compete with the weed of our youth.

there's ABC Aussie Bastard Cannabis which
has smooth leaves w/o the 'saw tooth' look
but it doesn't get quite so resinous as that,
it looks just like catnip full of trichs.......

I love old school weed. I've been searching for a real old school skunk but nobody knows what I mean. I want my house to stink from the garden, I want every body to tell me I stick when I pull out a nug, I want that skunk taste to be let on my tongue. Thats a skunk, and Id be will to trade genetics for the real deal skunk.

anyone remember the "sess" or "budda bliss" and tafari i am with you searching for a real "skunk" . closest things ive found recently are la confidential from dna and heavy duty fruity from th seeds. but they still dont have a overpowering skunk taste that lingers in your breath and sticks to your tounge.If 7you find her let me know.

I prefer to keep a low profile, so it is unlikely I will ever find my very first smoke and all time favorite Panama Red.
I have kept an ear/nose open for Panama Red for decades, and either came close a few years ago, or the guy was full of shit because it never materialized. My guess is fellow conniseurs of the 70s prefer to keep low profiles as well, therefore I may never be reunited with my favorite.

Were the good ol days really that GOOD? A lot of us are talking bout 30-40 yrs ago. Think the pot was better? Or is it in your memory that you think it was? Guess we'll never know huh? As far as price...... 1988 Chicago 110.00 lb, 2009 Portland 200.00 oz. Back then smoked joints, now smoking a joint made with today's pot would bring on such high, that I would probably..................... forget it, scares me to think.

Nobody is saying that there wasn't crap field weed back then. There certainly was. Hell there is still tons of mexican field crap weed. That was also definitely a part of it sticking in peoples memories so hard when they get a good bag. But that they aren't as strong isn't true at all.
What is the top strain everyone wants and nobody sells? Haze. Pure haze. People didn't stop growing these electric sativas because they were not good weed they quit growing them because they are unstable and don't yield much. But that didn't matter when you could grow big patches of it. Now we need stable, fast flowering, high yielding, highly potent weed so we can grow it indoors.
That doesn't say anything about the quality of the better specimens of the times. In fact if you read peoples post the problems they have about the older genes is that they are watered down, or inbred. Not that they aren't as good as people remember.

Motaco, have you noticed the newer improved hybrid strains also being more finicky to grow than the old strains? Seems like back in the 70's you could just go skinny dipping and let nature tend to the plants; having been forced indoors to grow now (and switching to hydro when I got tired of dirt problems) I'm curious as to how much more temperamental today's strains are when left to their own outdoors.

@gobwatts. Well I'm really young as far as old stoners are concerned. I got most of my classic strains actually gifted to me because I'm young though. People want to give their beans to someone who will be here to keep them for years to come you know.
I never did much guerilla growing except when I was very young and none with land races.
But based on when I have grown out my classic strains vs other types of just regular mexi brick, I honestly never found older strains to be any easier than newer ones. I think what we forget is the amount of seeds we used to have at our disposal, and how many were not stellar.
Life is always a catch 22. When you have a stable plant that yields well, it's really become adapted to it's environment and it only produces well when it's in it. Now we pay 5 bucks a seed. Buy ten of them and they are usually stable enough and produce what we want indoors. But bare in mind the seed expects to be living indoors.
But we used to get 30-100 seeds in an ounce. If you asked friends it's easy to get jars full. You throw seeds out and harvest what worked. The plants were unstable but that is what guaranteed SOME of them would grow well in your area. Smoke the best and sell the rest. Take the seeds out of the best buds and grow them another 2-3 years and then you got plants doing pretty good in your area because they've adapted.
But if we were to take that idea to modern times and indoors we'd notice all of the seeds that didn't pop, or died, or whatever. Then how unstable the remaining were and how many you would have to grow to get something to work indoor. But if you took your indoor genes back outdoors they wouldn't produce because they already adapted to indoors, and they don't have the range of phenotypes that can protect them in an unknown environment.
What I'm really trying to say is I don't think it's the plants I think it's the selection. We don't plant anywhere near the numbers and we have such high expectations of what our couple of seeds should do that it paints us into a corner of how and what weed we can grow.

Better then or now? Who can really say. All you breeders out there almost gaurantee that the strains are more potent today. I remember 40 yrs ago....lol '69....good summer for concerts (cept Altamont). Tons of weed in the N.East that tasted like smoking pure hash. Not just a lil hashy taste but like hitting on a block of Lebanese. Proceed directly to a coma. The most unbelievable delicious taste. The weed smelled like Mexican Brickomatic but was the sweetest taste ever. THATS what I want to grow for a first time out. Anyone can suggest something that'll do okay indoors that has that real strong hash taste. I'd druther a sativa high but will gladly do drool time couchlock for that beautiful taste. Hash plants on the list but im not sure if thats smell or taste. Gotta do more homework.
Btw Mixed reviews on K.C. Brains stock... Not inviting people to talk trash on a breeder but I will pose the question : Do you get what you pay for in seed pricing?
