No deal as Senate takes procedural vote on coronavirus package

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) delayed an initial vote related to a mammoth coronavirus stimulus package until later Sunday as a deal over the bill remains elusive.

McConnell moved the vote on a "shell" bill, which the text of the stimulus package would be added to, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m on Sunday.

The decision comes after McConnell had appeared determined to move forward even as Democrats fumed over the stimulus bill being circulated by Republicans.

I wouldn't interfere in your Sunday if this wasn't urgent. Mitch McConnell and Treas Sec Steve Mnuchin are today circulating a proposed taxpayer-funded corporate bailout with no strings attached. It could be voted on in the Senate today, Sunday.

The proposal gives Mnuchin (and Trump) complete discretion to choose which industries and companies will receive $200 billion to $500 billion, and then hide the identity of the bailout recipients for six months.
There's no requirement that companies maintain payroll or benefits, no requirements to reduce executive pay, very limited restrictions on stock buybacks (that Mnuchin can waive), no oversight, no safety provisions to protect frontline workers, and no paid sick leave.

And it provides nothing for the tens of millions of American workers who have or will soon lose their jobs -- no expansion of unemployment insurance, no health insurance, no direct cash payments.
And nothing for hospitals and hospital staffs that are, or will soon be, inundated.
Please phone both your senators and leave messages, demanding they put people over corporations. And please share this message.
