Which is also getting worse as a side effect of this COVID-19 pandemic and panic. Understandably so I suppose.
I have been very public about the fact that I used to be a very heavy opiate addict including daily IV heroin use. I have been clean since May of 2011.
I have lost countless friends and an ex girlfriend to overdoses. The majority are gone. I have had several friends who had also gotten clean confide in me that they have relapsed due to not being able to handle the stress and unease of COVID-19. They went back to what they knew would make them feel good.
To be honest, if I had access to heroin, I'd probably do a nice dose and enjoy it, and then later cook up a massive dose and end it all, as this turmoil and unease is getting overwhelming for me. "Fortunately" Chile doesn't have an opioid epidemic, so I can't even find relief in what I know would be my personal cure.

I am in Spain. Here many old people are dying in hospitals. It is really terrible!
Since March the 7th the government declared the state of alarm for 15 days. And yesterday they extended it 15 days more (I am sure they will extend it at least for 2-3 months).
We cannot go outside our homes. Only to buy food and other necessary products, to the doctor, the pharmacy or to walk with the pet (dog). Some crazy people are gooing out with sheep, rabbits, spider crabs and even a stuffed doggie. Others go to buy bread 5 times per day to get out their homes. Some people spit to the policemen. A woman who did that tested positive for cornavirus. Toilet paper has been the first thing to run out from supermarkets. Pivate label products have plainly dissapeared. Only the most exepensive products are still in the shelves and not many in numbers. All the people are wearing masks and rubber gloves. Even junkies are wearing gloves and masks. If police catch two people inside a car or going together to buy food to the supermarket both get a 600€ fine (so 1200€), or even they get arrested. But amazingly you can still go in taxi, bus or train. Streets are empty and there are patrols of policemen, civil guards and even the army. It really looks exactly like a coup d'etat.
I only two days the USA has surpassed us in number of cases.
It is really crazy in only a few days we have gone from jokes about the "kung flu" to be in a state of panic.
Mass media have been inducing panic in people since about two months. Bus strangely the government has allowed people to go and came from Northern Italy until about a week ago. Even football teams and their supporters, students, people who travelled to Milan to buy fashion handbags, shoes,...
There have been concerts, mass meetings, soccer and other mass events while we knew the virus could have arrived to the country.
A politician who visited Milan in Ferbuary the 14th!!! He got infected there and knowing he was sick he assisted to a meeting of his party with more than 9,000 people. Later he greeted personally 1,100 people in a dinner of his party that evening. Now many politicians are positive for the virus.
What it is really even more strange is the lucky coincidence with the appearance in the media of this:

Thank you for the report. Here in Germany the hospitals and doctors are waiting for the surging wave of patients who will come next two weeks. We heard private rumors of nurses telling they are already running out of respiratory devices.
Most people stay inside, but not all. There is no official curfew, but it is not allowed to make contact to other persons, except you live in the same household or its a family.

One explanation: Germany produces own test kits and we have comparably many of them and started testing people in an early stage. We also have many laboratories which can examine the probes. So many infected people were found who only have slightly symptoms. In other countries like Italy and Spain people got tested much later. People go to hospitals when they have severe issues and fight for breath. So the tested people are a selection of infected people with severe symptoms.
I guess the hidden numbers of infected in South Europe are higher than in Germany. We are a bit behind but exponential development is inevitable. We are waiting for the health system to break down and in the end the numbers will be similar.

People here are starting to panic. State borders are shutting down,I suspect ours is next. Got my hands full trying to keep family members calm. This is going to be a long difficult time for most of us but we'll continue as best we can.
One bright moment for myself is that in a couple days I'll be harvesting what brought me to forums like this in the first place.

It is true the death rate is really low compared to Italy, China, Iran and Spain.
I agree with you. Here they send people to their homes without testing if the symptons are mild. They only test politicians, sportists, celebrities, rich people, and the ones with sever symptoms who need medical care. So the number of actually infected people are greatly understimated. I guess we can estimate the real number of infected people comparing the death % with other similar countries.
I have also read in Germany they are using interferon alfa 2B from Cuba, which lowers the death rate a lot.
