Coronavirus.. outlook

Mr D

A hospital in Seattle area has sent out a note to staff, shared with me, suspending elective surgery and warning that "our local COVID-19 trajectory is likely to be similar to that of Northern Italy." The hospital is down to a four-day supply of gloves.

Coronavirus: Italian doctor describes patients' last moments
A doctor on the frontline of the battle against the virus says patients are lucid and ask to talk to their loved ones.

A doctor has described the last moments of coronavirus patients, saying they remain lucid until the end and ask to talk to their loved ones by phone as they realise they are dying.

Doctor Francesca Cortellaro, from the San Carlo Borromeo hospital in Milan, is one of many medical staff in Italy to speak candidly about their struggle with coronavirus.

Many have shared harrowing tales and photos of exhausting shifts - and of the toll the battle is taking. One has likened the virus to an earthquake.

Dr Cortellaro told Italian newspaper Il Giornale: "You know what's most dramatic? Seeing patients dying alone, listening to them as they beg you to say goodbye to their children and grandchildren."

Denver moves to limit police contact with public
Denver police will limit contact with the public when possible in order to limit the spread of coronavirus, the mayor announced Friday.

Mayor Michael Hancock said residents with low-level complaints would be directed to make them online or over the phone "to further reduce person-to-person interactions."

"To be clear, this change will not impact the dispatching of officers to high-priority emergency incidents," he said.

In a statement, the city said low-priority reports could include a property crime that previously occurred, theft, vandalism, lost property or identity theft. It said the policy would begin "immediately on a small scale

Schools in the area closing for two weeks starting next week. Relatives in Las Vegas are posting pics of empty grocery store shelves, including food at Walmart.

Other relatives in the Philippines say schools just got cancelled indefinitely.

Quarantined patients at my wife’s work can only be attended to by a single individual due to lack of available masks, gowns, gloves.

China hints at denying Americans life-saving coronavirus drugs..fox news reporting

In an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that's largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in the city of Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."

The disturbing threats made during a global pandemic as well as the scary consequences if that threat becomes real highlight just how tight China's grip is on the global supply chain. Already, the Food and Drug Administration has announced the first drug shortage related to the coronavirus. Though it did not disclose which drug was in short supply, the FDA did say it could not access enough raw components needed because they are made in China.

That doesn't come as a surprise to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla, who told Fox News on Thursday that America is "dangerously reliant" on China for the production of critical goods, including parts for technologies needed to fight COVID-19.

I'd call that an act of war.

I'd call that an act of war.
I would call the jackasses who chose to send our businesses over
there in the first place, short sighted greedy and foolish individuals.
The same bunch of far sighted wizards who came up with the idea to
ship all of our industry over there, now act as if China somehow
took something from us.
We are poorly served by short sighted asses making
decisions which benefit only a precious few.

Its pretty clear that trump is our president.
Whatever happened to "the buck stops here"?
I was hoping to keep following this thread since it seemed for the most part to be nonpartisan and focused on the issue at hand. But then the hacks and idiots of both sides start digging in to play politics. Time to move on back to growing threads.

So they are going to setup drive-thru testing stations in the parking lots of select Wal-Mart, Walgreen's, and Target locations and you drive up and get swabbed and supposedly results within 24-36 hours. Google is creating a website where you get screened for Coronavirus symptoms and then told where to go get the test.

If you think Coronavirus is scary, you really don't want to delve into the morass that is the American healthcare system.

Short answer: Depends on your insurance, also depends on where you live (New York state has directed insurers to waive testing fees).

If you didn't get the flu vaccine, it's possible to have had the flu, which was worse than usual this year. Sorry you were so ill. Hopefully feeling human again instead of road kill. (no pun intended)

I did have the shots for flu and pneumonia this year it could be flu shot missed my strain. I'm from the 40s so my system ain't what it was

I agree with all of that. China didn't take something from us but it did give us something. A new global pandemic and now it thinks it can hold a metaphorical gun to the world's head by depriving them of drugs. That isn't right, regardless of greedy tax dodging corporations and cheap global production being moved to China the past decades. That is an open threat, sort of if we're going down we're taking us with you type deal - especially if said drugs are already in contract and paid. Also drawing a comparison to the actions of American businesses to the Chinese government response on the world's drug supply in these times isn't an accurate comparison. In part it is them realizing their world grip will fade with this scare.

China gave us the Bird flu as well. They didn't exactly help with the H1N1 outbreak either which didn't originate there but became an epidemic there. We obviously haven't shamed their morose - dare I say dogged - food, health and public safety practices on a global level enough. How else do you end up with new and improved diseases without hosting a nice rotten environment for them to evolve in? Add on the widespread use of antibiotics and the outcome is predictable. This should be called Wuhan Flu so we all remember where it started...

If they are serious and follow through there are many labs across the country and in universities in the US that could be drafted into drug production. And if they are serious nobody will trust them in the future, a short sightedness on their part. Desperate times make people do desperate things.
