Governments seek to cushion social and economic impact of the virus.
With the virus continuing to spread to more countries on Tuesday and epidemics in Iran, Italy and South Korea showing no signs of slowing, governments worked to devise plans to combat the pathogen without causing widespread social disruption and economic upheaval.

In the United States, where there are now more than 100 confirmed cases in 15 states and six deaths linked to the virus, the Trump administration sought to project an image of control even as concerns emerged about early missteps, including defective diagnostic kits and highly restrictive rules for administering the tests, both of which may have contributed to the early spread of the virus.

Officials promised to speed up delivery of testing kits, saying that they hoped to distribute more than a million by the end of the week.

In New York, where a 39-year-old health care worker tested positive for the virus after going to the hospital with mild respiratory symptoms, health officials said they would no longer need to send tests to the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta but could perform tests in labs locally, speeding up the process.

As the number of global infections surged past 90,000, financial policymakers from the world’s seven largest economies, known as the Group of 7, met on Tuesday and said they were “ready to act” to limit the economic fallout, but did not announce any specific policy measures, disappointing Wall Street.

President Trump, in an early morning post on Twitter, called for a “big” interest rate cut “to make up for China’s coronavirus situation and slowdown.”

Iran remained a source of concern in the Middle East, with nearby Bahrain and Kuwait reporting dozens of new cases tied to the Iranian outbreak.

Tehran has confirmed more than 2,300 cases, but public health experts have expressed concern that the authorities are understating the true breadth of the epidemic there.

Just three weeks ago, South Korea had only a handful of cases. Now there are nearly 5,000, demonstrating how quickly the virus can spread.

And officials in Italy saw the number of new cases push past 2,000 on Tuesday, even as the government sought to restore some sense of normality in Milan, the city closest to the hardest hit areas in the country’s north.

Fed Makes Emergency 0.75% Rate Cut

In a statement, the Fed said: “The committee took this action in view of a weakening of the economic outlook and increasing downside risks to growth. While strains in short-term funding markets have eased somewhat, broader financial market conditions have continued to deteriorate and credit has tightened further for some businesses and households.”

“Moreover,” the statement continued, “incoming information indicates a deepening of the housing contraction as well as some softening in labor markets.”

ill coat my hands in pine tar lol

LOL, smoke enough rosin soaked reefers and coat the inside of your lungs with tar also.

But a good tar... My lungs are already feeling a lot better, using that whip on the desktop instead of the balloon.

So the feckless fed has cut rates huh? The JCB is buying ETFs (they own over 80% of those), the fed is buying bad commercial debt, who knows what legard is doing. The chicoms bot a bunch of their stawk.

The fed can try to placate markets with free moolahs, but it can't spur demand. The consumer is 2/3's of the economy, and once the shelves are empties and people stay home, once the paychecks stop cause they had to stay home... things slow down. Costco stawk is up temporary like cause of the stockers. I imagine WMT will see a similar short term boost. I sure have spent a bunch there the last 3 weeks, but I won't need to get inside one again for 3 months.

They call these "interesting times". Got popcorn?

On Thursday night, the FDA released a statement saying the U.S. was experiencing its first drug shortage directly related to the coronavirus outbreak. It did not name the drug, but said that there was a manufacturing issue with a pharmaceutical ingredient related to a site affected by coronavirus.

Novel coronavirus outbreak doubling every 6.4 days, Emory infectious disease researcher says
Woodruff Health Sciences Center | Feb. 5, 2020

Emory News Center: Coronavirus

Health, Woodruff Health Sciences Center, Research, School Of Medicine, Health Sciences Research, Infectious Diseases, Coronavirus, Carlos Del Rio

Carlos del Rio, MD, executive associate dean for Emory University School of Medicine at Grady Health System, published important information for clinicians in JAMA detailing the 2019 novel coronavirus pandemic, saying that the outbreak is doubling in case size every 6.4 days.

Del Rio also notes in the paper that the median age of cases is 49-55.5 years, and while pediatric cases are rare, they have been reported to occur.

Del Rio is also professor of global health and epidemiology in Rollins School of Public Health and professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine.

WHO chief says new virus much deadlier than flu, but less transmissible
World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Tuesday that data has shown the new coronavirus disease to be considerably deadlier than the usual seasonal flu, but he added that it also appears to spread less easily.

Crucially, Tedros also said it did not appear that the new COVID-19 disease was spread readily by infected individuals who are not experiencing symptoms themselves. That news came after days of experts warning that many thousands of cases could essentially be hidden around the world, spread quietly by infected people with either mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.

Tedros said about 3.4% of confirmed COVID-19 cases have died globally, a huge increase in previous estimates which have ranged between 1-2%. Generally the seasonal flu kills less than 1% of those infected, Tedros said by way of comparison.

As far as I can tell, the American policy is to MAXIMIZE C-Virus carnage, so as to extract as many Benjamins as possible from the situation.

Right now I think the WHO is covering up for the chicoms and the lab they approved, and the CDC is screwing up way too badly to just be regular bureaucratic incompetence.

Believe, and act based on their reports, at your own peril.

There were more than 100 cases in 15 states as of Tuesday morning, with New Hampshire and Georgia being the most recent to join the battle against the virus.

Iran is having real trouble figuring this out.

Those 300,000 virus fighters ... at least 1/2 of them will be virus spreaders.

OR WORSE ... if there are shrine lickers on the squad then it's like Pigpen, from the Peanuts comic strip, but the cloud of dust is cloud of floaty viruses. Which the infectious team members are spewing out constantly.

This virus is sort of a dust factory. It multiplies so much it creates massive teeny little hairballs of coronavirus.

Too small to see. Sort of hard to comprehend. Spreads like a fragrance on the wind, but you can't see it.

The virus is 1 micron in size, the mask’s are useless unless you live in a sealed lab with all the air coming through a heapa filter you can get it. They keep saying to wash your hands but you have to use paper towels to dry your hands you can leave it on your bathroom towel. The Pres says his rallies are very safe this guy has no clue. Take all the infected people and quarantine them at miralargo...

dead citizens pay no taxes
and the economic carnage is just that, carnage
understand the hate, but if you want to hate
just look at the public health spending decisions of late
that is the cause and effect

Given the choice, would you put the infectious disease research center in the most remote place you can find, or your industrial center?

I'm starting to wonder if we keep our most toxic stuff in the middle of London.

Clueless comes to mind. Yet their are stories of other escapes from labs in cities. WTF are such things doing in cities. Bunkers in the outback..desert..poles. On ships that never dock, with nearby quarantine ships used as a matter of course.

Deadly shit in your most important and populated areas. It's time we replaced some of these loons with some survivalist loons, to balance what they are doing.
