Coco Tree's

Anything bigger then 5 is over kill in coco... 1lb plants are easily obtainable in 5 gal even 3s.. if u want to water once a day this is not for you... the whole benefit of coco n smaller pots come with the multiple feedings... if u want to do large pots once a day feeds I would go dirty n not bother coco... they will work but you won't see many benefits coco can provide ...

I do want to set up a dtw system, but i am still trying to configure how to feed 30-40 7 gallon pots.If i go by what djm quoted (.9 gal of water per 1 gal pot),so .9 x7=6.3.
6.3 ÷5 feeds a day =1.26 gal

If i round it off to 6 gal x 40 pots thats 240 gal daily.
I was thinking about a 275 gal res to top off 1 or 2 x55 drum barrels or something similar using float switches.I know there's something out there them boys use for commercial dtw setups,or maybe i'd have to reread this thread again...

I have 96 plants in 10's and 7's on a drip system. You wont need to give them nearly that much water. I have 2 55gal rez's on float switches. I go through about 60-70 gallons a day.

Then it's no way a dtw system.According to my calculation 70gal ÷96 plants=0.73 gal daily. Are you treating it as soil?Or maybe multiple feeds with no drop offs?

OK ur forgetting a few more key things... ur gonna go through alot of water but not that much water.... it's not your standard drain to waste... trick is to dial your water amounts so your coco stays wet so forget the normal rules of run off... u want the bare minimum or even none... and I never actually measured but I know if I were to use the formula shown I'd be pouring 1 gal over each 5 gal pot every few hours I'd have hella water on the floor / down the drain.... if you dump one gal on a dry 5gal pot u be fine but do that again few hrs later n see what happens....
so remember these key points

1.... water more often with less amounts
2..... use smaller pots 3-5 gal ( POINTLESS WASTEFUL AND STUPID TO GO BIGGER (with this technique )
3.... DO NOT EVER LET THEM DRY OUT EVER!!!!!!!! (BAD BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN)

One more thing... if u are hand watering all this is meaningless... I can't imagine having to go into a room every 2 hrs.. growing in coco is simple and no matter how you prefer to do it just remember #3
DONT LET THEM DRY OUT EVER ONCE YOU GIT ROOTS ESTABLISHED N U BE FINE....

I can tell u read the thread so I'm not gonna get into the whole can't over water thing in detail... out of time... good luck...

Hahaha ya man its a dtw system. Some plants have more drippers than others so some plants get more than others. Theres no calculation to find how much water your plants will need until you get them in your room and set up then they tell you how much they can take. Im in a high perlite/coco 80/20 mix so my pots dont hold nearly the same amount as straight coco. I feed 12x a day with little to no runoff. I cant use anything smaller than a 7 or my plants will fall over from the weight of the canopy.

This was my first run many years ago in straight coco. 5's would not have sufficed. lol

How many plants per light are you doing? Ive done 2 pound plants in 10 gals in coco/perlite mix. You want to be feeding alot more than once per day to get the most out of coco or coco/perlite mixes.

Just upgrated to phantom de's, 1 per plant in a 5x5 scrog

I hear you.Very good info.I am hand watering with a wand now,but i want to switch to dtw.I don't mind dumping 20℅ to 30℅ drop off if i have too,my nutes are cheap.I just want to be able to for instance to make my nute mix in a res ,and not have to worry about it for days.I've been looking up and researching diagrams online to no avail.I know guys are doing this with their 2-3 gal in tents and what not (smaller scale),but i still can't find anything,on a bigger scale. Something that involves top off reservoirs, float switched, float valves etc.

I am thinking a top off reservoir where it feeds 1 or 2 smaller reservoirs that feed the plants.I go in and dump my nutes and water ,hit a switch or something and the mixture goes to the other 2 smaller res,or even something remotely close to this scenario...

There is absolutely no need to waste 20-30% on run off every feed, you will be making rez's every single day. I have a full automated drip system set up in my 24 light room, if you want help setting yours up just pm me.

Exactly... u want enough water so they stay wet but don't run off...... key part is never letting them go dry...

Dosatron for the big guys.

Happy to say I think I have been successful in my build that I set up using mostly info from djm + dhf + ichabod

Small bedroom 12x 15 or so as lung
2 x 4x4 @ 1k each flower. Open hood. flipping with solis tek remote
1x 3x3 veg 600
7 awesome fans and one thermostatic controller from outside intake
Whole house humidifier
73* 51% at 1k
Flipped a few days ago.
See how she goes.

Ain't cheap. But well worth it.
Heavy air exchange in all chambers

Thanks to the whole thread and all those involved

an added waterfall from pump up thru a 1/2 in tubing splashing back down to a 5 gal bucket increases RH by around 10% and that's with exhaust fan. ?! hmm

I couldnt tell ya man, been years since that run. I think it was a couple gallons a day for sure.

My biggest plants were in totes also. Every root equals a shoot.

A plant in a bigger container will outgrow a smaller container plant a lot faster too.

I've been using 3 gallon airpots for over 7 months and nothing beat the lb+ plants I was getting in totes, and they only got a month of veg in them too.

I do have a plant I revegged in a 3 gallon airpot; She keeps growing. So smaller container is possible, roots die and break devour old root systems.

But going to go to 14 gallon brute food grade totes again. 2 months of veg, tie down the shoots (supercrop).

Good stuff

Hi djm. great stuff here. i go the same way. i dont really listen much to lot of what people say cause they just copy others instead of getting the understanding of stuff. anyway i was curious to know if you tried gavitas 1000. i have a 6x4 space and i want to know if i would get decent equal lighting from it. my 6x4 is all reflective on all sides and every nook and crannie will be green for me. i just want to know if a gavita 1000 is more effieceint in a space like this or would i actually be better off with a 600 or 750 gavita. ive always know that people arent using lights effiecently when using hps many just dont get it. anyway wanted to know your opiniom since i just happen to have a 6x4 space and gavita supposedly throw light in a 6x4 but gavitas were made to be effective when used in multiple units as light crosses over to make more even canopy light up equally. but for me in a exact one light area. which is 6x4.= 24 sqft. is lower than your 5x5 sqft using regular hps lights instead of de lights (double ended hps lights) actually u use 5.5x 5.5 which is like 30sqft. so as for area you have more plant area and even though i use a gavita i have less plant area. so how should i go about it. use a gavita 1000? or a lower wattage one or just go hps and change my space to 5.5X6 since i dont wanna make another wall just to shrink the 6'. what are your thoughts thanks

If you got height a gavitas will work but 2,of those lec315s will be much more ideal for your situation... easy to cool less power n will cover the small space better. But if u got the height and cooling a gavitas will work..
