Butane Residue Test Results

We distilled the whole of it through the terpenator. The MO was really foul. The oil we have made thereafter has been great.

I guess the questions I have now are: what "grade" is Eco Green's NButane? After distillation would it matter the grade for any reason other than bragging?
Has any one checked for MO after distilling their butane?

We are local to skunk Pharm and are very curious to see lab tests from NButane after it has already been distilled and would be more than happy to donate toward a lab test.

"Has any one checked for MO after distilling their butane?"

I haven't heard of it, but why not check it yourself?

"How to do the test,

Cheapest generic supermarket one gallon ziplock bag, cut the ziplock off, fold up, place on .01 or .001 scale, record tare weight, fold over the top one inch to the outside, place in a pyrex dish, place the pyrex dish in another dish, squirt a full can of ~300ml butane lighter refill into a quart Mason jar as per the video, pour the liquid butane into the plastic bag, add warm water to the larger dish, after boil off vacuum purge the bag, fold the bag, place on scale, record weight, deduct tare weight from final weight, post result to ICMAG's "Butane Residue Test Results" thread. TIA!!!

Freeze the can of butane and the Mason jar by placing in the freezer for a couple of hours before the test to maximize the amount of liquid butane collected.

R600 is 99.99% purity, which isn't the same thing as lighter fuel butane purity.

Lighter butane is a mixture of gases and the less than 50 ppm impurity level relates to heavier constitutes, while refrigerant butane 99.99% means that only about .1% total is heavier constitutes or other fuel gases.

All of the MO I have sampled was foul, so we automatically distill it out before extracting with even with 99.99% from Airgas, Praxair, Matheson, or others.

What I believe SH was alluding to, was that the Chinese R600 MO has residuals in that smell fishy, vis a vis the pungent butyl odor in MO from other sources like Korea or UK.

The difference is trace residuals from the crude coming from different fields.

The analysis we did of it before distillation revealed that none of the components were at levels to be of concern compared to current standards, so distillation simply means that there are less of them.

A subsequent analysis will show lower levels of the same thing, with a shift in balance toward the lighter residuals like pentane.

We can run such a test on some we have distilled, but have been using, or on a tank before and after distillation for direct comparison. The first scenario will cost about $350 and the second $700.

What we have done, is double and triple distilled butane, but have found little remaining after one distillation with careful control of the cold trap temperature and vacuum.

Running a second distillation is also a good way to check for yourself, and to monitor your level of process control. We hold the cold trap bath at 85F and stop recovery at 0 psi gauge, to avoid the pentane, which boils around 100F at atmospheric pressure (0 psi gauge).

Thank you both for your timely replies. It is nice to know my patients are safe. Noe I am admittedly a bit concerned for those who frequent that dispensary in Portland.

I am going to RSD Friday to get a 50# recovery tank as our second bottle of R600 should be here by then. I plan to distill our current butane supply a second time from the 30# to the 50# recovery tank. I will take samples at each step and perform the basic test as SH has. A sample from the once distilled NButane will be taken and if all ngoes well sent for lab analysis.

The ignorant and nearly slanderous remarks have yet to be taken down rehgqrding our solvent and I have informed EcoGreen in case they want to step in. Have a dispensary say your solvent is unsafe is not good for business.

Just one more thanks to SH and GW and everyone else who has out in work to get closed loop extraction to where it is today.

Here's a video of how to run a passive closed loop system in six short parts. How the butane can be distilled to remove the Mystery Oil is in part two. I'll admit it, I finally want a CLS.

I would lower the recovery temperature when distilling the butane, to below 100F, where Pentane boils and lower the cold bath temperature to compensate some.

The Pentane can be removed from the oil later, but requires more heat and time than butane, costing you more of the monoterpenes.

so.. I been looking at butane this am. to grab more before I run out.. and I see that whip it.. has made a butane for stove fuel.. its cheap.. and 8oz cans..

says its made at the same factory as power 5x..

just wondering if anyone has tried.. im not sure I think ud need to make a thing to allow to use in a passive system like a lighter filler attachment or something

figured id ask.. im not buying it lol. just wondering if its just as good.. I mean u can get 24 8oz cans.. for 45$.. which is a great price.. wondering if its worth it..

or since its for stoves.. is that nasty smell mercaptans n shit added?

If you find it doesn't contain added odorant/mercaptan I'll test it for non-volatile residuals.

You got a link? Their Whip-It! 5x and 9x is made in Korea ~ likely same plant as Power 5... so I wonder if it's the same butane, just repackaged... I've used Whip-It 9x and felt it was a very good butane for the $$ though I prefer other brands, namely Lucienne, which is a little cheaper and just as good if not better... but if my local shop is out of Lucy then I'd use Whip-It 9x again without a 2nd thought...

Have you done one on Whip-It Premium in the 400ml cans?

whip-it! Premium had 0.003g of residue
whip-it! Premium, UK, 400ml can, reads on the bottom "239 M 17:25 1"

Excellent butane, and the can is indeed 400ml.

I was just wondering if you had a personal favorite? I have been using Zippo because of this thread from a long time ago. Last time Iwas at the store the clerk says "be careful, that is the worst to use, I only use Vector". I ignored him and bought the Zippo. also got some Newport. Any suggestions of personal favorites? Thanks

STOK FYR ABSOLUTE PURITY had 0.003g of residue

STOK FYR ABSOLUTE PURITY, USA, 325ml can, reads on the bottom "14190(1) STOK 325ml 04086"

The residue in the test bag had no smell, was clear with a slight whitish tint, and wasn't sticky or greasy. All the liquid solvent in the test bag evaporated off quickly and smoothly below 65F, with no sign of anything but n-butane (~35F boil off and low pressure with a frozen can.)

As usual, the claim of zero Mystery Oil is shown to be false by a simple test anyone could do...

This has probably been discussed before but I have to ask.

What sort of consistency does each brand have in terms of the mixes they use? Could two different cases of butane x yield different residual results?

I was put on to a new manufacturer of canned butane, Ignitus, and they're sending me samples of their 3X, 5X, and 7X to test (they're presently out of 11X.)

The rep I spoke with claimed to have some fairly deep overseas canned butane manufacturing experience, so I dug as deep as I could in the couple of minutes I had, and I still don't know the actual basic refining techniques. I just don't get it, 11X??? And supposedly you guys are cleaning it up 100% by a simple pass through your CLS?

Any other new canned butanes out there I might have missed??

I think those new Stok Fyr cans are PTFE lined like the Puretane ones. I wonder if this whitish residue you are getting is from the PTFE lining of the cans?

I'll save a can next time Im in the city, I was just wondering about this. There was a small amount of mystery oil from distilling 12lbs, but no idea if it was a lot or not, I just wiped it out with iso.

I'll also grab a can of the ronson thats common around here, Im pretty sure its not labeled as #2 or #3, its in a white can, it would be nice if its the same stuff on the top of your list, i think its cheaper.

Shoot me an address.
