I have a Deep Chunk cross that reeks of skunk while growing. The others (same cross) have a burnt rubber twist.

I have put down Lavender X BB #3.After Reading Sams post I decided to wait till this morning to smell the plants again.

From the 2 option given I think is more like late flowering terpene production. The other smells are not gone (liquorice/floral/sweet), are still there, but when I touch/ squezze the buds the fetid/harsh smells ar coming up.

I remembered that the Lavender used as mom in the cross had some harsh smell too.

Some toughts about this Afghani genetics...

A landlocked mountainous country with plains in the north and southwest, Afghanistan is described as being located within Central Asia[8][43] or South Asia.[7][44][45] It is part of the Greater Middle East Muslim world, which lies between latitudes 29° N and 39° N, and longitudes 60° E and 75° E. The country's highest point is Noshaq, at 7,492 m (24,580 ft) above sea level. It has a continental climate with very harsh winters in the central highlands, the glaciated northeast (around Nuristan) and the Wakhan Corridor, where the average temperature in January is below −15 °C (5 °F), and hot summers in the low-lying areas of the Sistan Basin of the southwest, the Jalalabad basin in the east, and the Turkestan plains along the Amu River in the north, where temperatures average over 35 °C (95 °F) in July.[citation needed]

Landscapes of Afghanistan, from left to right: 1. Band-e Amir National Park; 2. Salang Pass in Parwan Province; 3. Korangal Valley in Kunar Province; and 4. Kajaki Dam in Helmand Province

Despite having numerous rivers and reservoirs, large parts of the country are dry. The endorheic Sistan Basin is one of the driest regions in the world.[46] Aside from the usual rain falls, Afghanistan receives snow during winter in the Hindu Kush and Pamir Mountains, and the melting snow in the spring season enters the rivers, lakes, and streams.[47][48] However, two-thirds of the country's water flows into neighboring countries of Iran, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan. The state needs more than US$2 billion to rehabilitate its irrigation systems so that the water is properly managed

It looks to me that some áreas of Afghanistan have a very harsh/extreme climate, not much wáter and quite a por soil.

My question:

¿ Could this terpene profiles be the outcome of growing some landraces in this harsh/extreme enviroment during a long period of time?

In another words:

¿ Could this terpene profiles, be a phenotypicall reaction to a certain environment?

Genotype + environment = Phenotype

Just crap or makes sense ???:tiphat:

Terps

Makes sense seeing as a plants structure can change dramatically depending on its enviroment. I also notice pronounced terpenes when grown in a dialled enviroment than a new one, and slightly altered terps with the same clone grown under different lights.

So yeah i would also say that genotype + enviroment = phenotype

Then again maybe the afghan farmers just like that terp profile and selected towards it.

:dancer:Well I dont think the Afghan farmers know even what is a terpene, or what means to select.....

Even if they knew how to they haven´t got the logistics to do it.

WRONG, AFGHANS HAVE HAD A PRETTY ADVANCED AGRICUTURE, THEY MAY NOT KNOW WHAT A TERPENE IS BUT THEY KNOW HOW TO SMELL AND SELECT PLANTS THEY LIKE. AFGHANS HAVE NO PROBLEM GETTING HEROIN DISTRIBUTED ALL OVER THE WORLD, BUT YOU THINK THEY DON'T HAVE LOGISTICS TO SELECT CANNABIS? YOU ARE WRONG....
I DID LIVE THERE A WHILE.

I think it is like a colateral damage of a extreme climate, poor soil, poor watering.....over many generations.

AFGHAN FARMERS USE WHAT WATER THEY HAVE TO GROW CASH CROPS LIKE CANNABIS, THEY HAVE ENOUGH WATER BELIEVE ME. IF YOU SAW THE PRODUCE THEIR YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE IT, MELONS WAY BETTER THEN IN THE USA, POMEGRANATES THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN, BLOOD ORANGES SO GOOD, LOTS OF GREAT FRUIT AND VEGGIES MANY ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED IN AFGHANISTAN, ONE OF THE CENTERS OF DIVERSITY, OR CENTER OF ORIGIN FOR MANY PLANTS.

Let´s say if you neglect a human being, you don´t look the same as you have a good and healthy living standards.

It´s what happen with some women.
They go into marriage with inocence, as they has been educated for that, and they got neglected by their husbands, so they go bitter and end up looking ugly, bitter and depressed.

Sure the terpene smells could be some kind of phenotypical response that said, terpenes like Cannabinoids are controlled by genetics I see the environment as making the terpenes persist longer or dissipate faster dependent on the environment, I do not think the changes are permanent, so if you took a clone and grew it elsewhere it might smell quite different, but it produces the same terpenes, maybe even the same amounts? Really high temperature's will whittle away the amounts of terpenes on a plant, that is for sure. I know outdoor growers in really hot areas that grow under shade cloth, no building, to avoid terpene loss, it works pretty good.

Terps,
Yes I am sure the Afghan farmers select the terpenes they like best or associated with potency.

Ok.
I think that what afghan farmers have been doing is "traditional selection", keep the seed from the best plants.
What I mean is that in traditional áreas they don´t do sinse is open pollination. They don´t select indoors to grow selected clones outdoors.May be if we could train/educate people from this áreas, in some basic knowledge about cannabis ( basic breeding, soil, nutrients) they could improve their genetics themselves.

Could the terpene profile of Lemon Skunk come from the Acapulco Gold?
I´ve got a pack of Early Girl (Sensi ) on the fridge.

Early Girl = Afghan X North Indian is correct.????
I love that strain, may be people see low production and shy away, but when I grew her (around 2003/4) was pure anestesia.
Any info wellcome

Not married as you see, no intention either...... but Dem Mad Over Me Bwoy:rasta:

YES, BUT FROM THE BEST FIELDS INSTEAD OF THE BEST PLANTS, THEY DO NOT SMOKE INDIVIDUAL CANNABIS PLANTS, THEY SMOKE RESIN FROM MANY PLANTS. EACH FARMER MAY SAVE THE SEEDS FROM THE MOST RESINOUS PLANTS AS SPECIAL BUT AS THEY DO NOT SMOKE HERBAL CANNABIS THEY HAVE NO IDEA IF THE RESIN RICH PLANTS ARE THC ONLY, CBD ONLY, OR THC/CBD.
What I mean is that in traditional áreas they don´t do sinse is open pollination. They don´t select indoors to grow selected clones outdoors.
THEY KNOW ALL ABOUT SINSEMILLA, THEY, LIKE EVERY SIFTED HASH CULTURE IN THE WORLD MAKE THEIR HASH FROM SEEDED PLANTS.

NO PROBLEM, I AM SURE YOU WOULD BE HAPPY TO GO TO AFGHANISTAN TO HELP OUT THE FARMERS, JUST BE CAREFUL ABOUT GETTING KIDNAPPED, DRIVING PAST AN IED, OR LOOKING THE WRONG WAY AT ANYONE THAT HAS AN AK47 IN THEIR HANDS, IN OTHER WORDS, MOST OF THE MALE POPULATION.

YOU NEED TO ASK SINSI WHAT IT IS THEY ARE SELLING, I HAVE NO IDEA.

chitral valley, kalash people

chitral valley, kalash people

As we were talking about afghanistan área I remembered about this history that I find interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMXg4dg_j_w

This is chapter 1 of BBC´s documentary Michael Palin on the Hymalayas.
Around min. 30 he goes into Chitral Valley, and meets Kalash People. This people are supposed to come from remains of the army of Alexander the Great that stayed there thousands years ago. They look caucasian/White, they have been isolated and they have kept their genetical traits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalash_people

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chitral

Chitral valley has 1100 mt altitude but a mediterranean dry climate and is neighbouring with Afghanistan.
I guess the terpene profile coming from that landraces wasn´t harsh as some Afghanis.

The serie of documentaries is interesting, I don´t think there is really nothing cannabis related.

Morning:

I was thinking......

We take 50 Skunk#1 seeds from same seed line; we give 10 each to 5 different growers in 5 different countries and this task.

Starting from those seeds select the best male& female indoors, and grow them outdoors, pollinating a branch of the female to get some seeds.

Do this for 5 years and the fifth year, come back with samples of the best female.
I think there would be clear differences there as the adaptability of plants is really amazing.
It is true that in this case, we have The X Factor, the human factor, what is called the greenfinger besides the enviromental factors.

¿How many lines /phenos has been created from the original Skunk#1? Many..... RKS, Lemon Skunk,Red Hair Skunk ( colombian trait red pistils????) Cheese.......
The options are infinite.

With enough profiles ive noticed the terps are almost identical between phenos vs none related plants , Region must play into terpines production "ie" smells and flavors ..., it does seem like Southern Hemisphere plants have more citrus fruit floral vs northern , have the cedar spicy musky notes..
It appears the higher the combined total sum of cannabinoids and terpenes tend to be the strongest psychoactive effects, from what ive noticed , but hay! lol

DEPENDS ON HOW MANY PLANTS USED, THE FEWER THE BIGGER THE CHANGES, ALSO IT IS THE SELECTION THAT MAKES THE CHANGES, WHO SELECTS, WHAT FOR, ETC, ETC....
SO IS IT SELECTION OR ADAPTABILITY? I SAY SELECTION BY MAN OR SELECTION BY THE ENVIRONMENT.

Do this for 5 years and the fifth year, come back with samples of the best female.

I have kept careful track, there are exactly 3,721 skunk lines and 829,058 hybrids made from skunk#1. I know because I have grown and smoked them all!! Oh I mean, I made resin from them and smoked them all.

Thanks man, interesting.

Could be that the plant has a range of terpenes and cannabinoids into the genetical make up.
In the nature with no intervention, the plants produce a certain profile, doesn´t mean can´t produce others, may be are there in the genetical makeup.
When we change same landrace of enviroment the profile changes ( I would say quite quickly) in response to the environment.

The adaptability of cannabis is amazing and not just about terpenes, cannabinoids.

I guess that the change to autoflowering of Ruderalis had to be really quick to be able to survive in Siberia.

I bet ( don´t quote me on this one), less than 5 years/seasons.

Where did you get the analysis? Who did it? I can't figure out what the
Max. WL 21.90 or Max. WL 0.35 or Max. WL 1.08 refer to? up on top.
Or the WL % 0.59, WL % 24.30, WL %0.29, WL % 0.08, WL % 0.22, WL % 0.96, WL % 0.16??? Also on top...
Any idea?

If you analyze the terpene profile of an imported Thai or Afghani and make a simple F1 with a Skunk #1 that you already have the terpene analysis for, when you grow out the F1 seeds you can tell via a terpene analysis even if the F1 samples are all listed with numbers
to hide what they are. It is obvious when you look at the terpene analysis which are related to what, you see the major peaks of the Skunk #1 profile and the major peaks of the profile of the Thai or Afghani, it is that easy, they are mixed together in a single profile.

I agree, more THC with more Terpenes of the right kind = stronger Cannabis.

I would say:

Landraces/strains grown/ breed in more optimal environments more desirable terpene profiles.

If we are able to find what environment creates/ develops a certain terpene profile, we could apply that environment to a certain strain, to breed it towards a desired profile.:scripture:

I have to disagree, terpenes are related to smell no to potency.

Potency is related to different combinations of cannabinoids.
THCV does get you high IMO. It makes the effect to THC longer and I think that strains with high THCV are responsible for the what is called "clean effect", No ceiling. It does estimulate the mind and when the "comedown" comes you don´t feel it the way you do with sativa leaning, sativa/indica hybrids like SSH or Jack Herer.

¿Any idea of the cannabinoid profile of Early Girl any CBD on her?

P.D : Start bashing on me...

....And if I´m wrong about cannabinoids I can´t understand how CBD is considered sedative but people smoking so called " CBD rich strains " say that they don´t feel big deal at all.

I guess there is a lot to learn still.
