I have heard and read this as well, I would personally say stop after 35 min TOPS

I would personally not whip it in the first place. Kind of a waste of (according to people that have done it, never have myself) between 5 and 35 minutes.

I do not understand the desire to whip oil. It looks horrible, is a PITA to work with, and starts losing flavor within a matter of 1 or two days IME.

The only reason I could see one preferring budder over shatter is if said person does not have a proper oil vaporizing apparatus, in which case, he/she would smoke in out of a pipe with a screen or ::cringes:: on top of some flowers--:rolleyes:another pet peeve of mine. For all the trouble it takes to grow out a plant, flower it, harvest, and finally perform an extraction to separate the flavor producing and psychoactive compounds from all the bullshit, to go and just top it on a bowl seems like an awful waste...

i don't know. i find budder/wax tastes and smells better than shatter. shatter is easy to make. every strain will make glass hard oil. not every strain will budder/wax up. most of my wax is just strain specific. if you use good thc, you don't need to whip it. just purging properly will give it a waxy consistency

creating well purged shatter can be at times challenging but when done properly results in a superior end product than a whipped one, in my own opinion/preference

whipping is a very easy way to ensure a properly purged oil, which I think is why so many people enjoy doing so. however I feel that whipped oil is degraded when compared to non whipped. whipped oil is, at times, easier to handle than shatter...since it doesn't shatter across the room lol but often degrades beyond a desirable physical state and becomes a crumbly powder which you can't get on your pick even if your life depended on it.

some strains love to wax up, i've yet successfully make a blue dream extraction that is stable enough to remain shatter for more than a day :shucks:

This makes sense (in that I could see why people think it is a good idea), but as you and I have stated, there are more delicate ways to purge that result in a more stable product that tends to preserve itself better (Not to mention the optical clarity of a translucent-amber oil vs the murky opacity of budder)

Agreed! Still worth running BD, as it does produce a tasty extract.

Sorry for the tangent, y'all, I'm not trying to start a budder/shatter flame war.

I use a vapor swing and have for years. Still don't like the shatter, shatter is not purged well enough. If you see shatter in a club, stay clear. Most times it tastes like the solvent used.

You may think that smell and taste escape the final product, however I disagree. When I use Sour D or Chem D the final product has a very strong smell.

To each their own I guess.

Btw, I should add that wiping isn't always necessary. If left under low heat most will budder up without mixing. Also, I have never had a strain not budder up, however I don't doubt it either.

absolute truth here.....

used to run blue dot years ago and would "crack" up with in just a few minutes of purging all the butane, and blue dot yielded far more then any other strain i have purged since. would pay top dollar to get it again.....

today, i was whipping some kush for over 45 minutes for it to "crack" up....

I yield really well with blowfish runs. that's got the blue dot in it. I wonder if the resin production and consistency of the oils in the resin is inherited from the blue dot.

Thanks for the tip. I've never had the pleasure (or apparently misfortune) of buying oil from a club, or anyone else for that matter. Have always made it myself, and never smells or tastes of solvent.

I agree with both of your points actually. Smell and taste do escape the final product over time, I will stand by that (again this is from my personal experience with "auto-budder" strains, as I have never purposely produced budder). This is why the final product has a very strong smell.

I just ran some "Sour D" yielding around 22%, and is crystal clear shatter. If I were to "whip" it, I have no doubt that it would have a very strong smell. It smells only mildly in the state it is in, but the taste is quite pungent. It is less aromatic as shatter, but the taste is extreme. The more volatile terpenes are contained within its glassy shell, rather than being exposed to the elements.

When something is extremely aromatic, it is indicative that molecules are evaporating at room temperature.

Whenever I have had big batches budder on me, they always taste good the first day or two, but by the fourth or fifth day it just tastes like a generic "hash product.":dunno:

weird. I have probably 9 different buddered/waxed up strains of oil, all between 2 weeks and 4 months old. all taste and smell exactly the same way they did on the first toke.

I don't like the shatter because it's hard for me to put it on the end of my dabber. but most of the strains i use auto budder or budder up with a single 5 min whip and a nice long time on the heating pad.

yes i've had shatter that tastes amazing and i think there is some merit to your point about the terpenes being more pure encased in the shatter, but most people are more apt to purchase waxy fragrant oil. so when making large batches for dispensaries or other people, the waxier, the better. it usually get vaped or smoked before it's had enough time to degrade in that case anyway.

When I get shatter if I heat it for a while it will not return to shatter and will stay very tacky. I can use my glass dip stick to get me a few hits out of my vile. I will not pour out but it stays soft after its heated. Something gets purged out. I like it better like this. The color also darkens a bit. There is no more reactions when heated. If you dont heat it enough it will have a reaction from the water left it's almost like it's sparky.

I stir it will its heated for a while it wot turn to budder stays soft great for my Taco Bell swing

Correct observation, the fragility never returned after decarboxylation. Carboxyl group (-COOH) gets purged out together with aromas.

This is a sign of degradation caused by oxydation.

It depends on what is called "shatter".

Hard brittle texture indicates a high content of THСA, which may crystallize.

After decarboxylation from THCA to THC it is sticky forever because of the decrease in the THСA/THC ratio,

THC may not crystallize.
