I have a Lab that will kiss the faces of little kids and babies and bite anyone who threatens our family. I love this dog so much.

....But you would still have ta feed him, lol... To my understanding they are really good-natured and protective...not to mention...VERY INTIMIDATING!!!

Then again, I only have a "Guard Kitty"

I like the dobie x rott.....

...well I like all dog's really except for the yapping ankle biter varieties (toy dogs).....

....my 2 Doberman x rottweiler (crosses) have longer legs than a Rott and so are much faster in a straight line and cornering, I would say that they are most agile and run rings around pure Rotts......plus they have more power and strength than a Doberman and mine love to swim... any chance they get to crash into some big waves and they will retrieve anything you throw in the sea just about....

I do find them just slightly louder (occasionally bark) than the Rottweilers who are mostly silent because they seem to have that Doberman attentiveness/nervousness that never gets them as relaxed as the Rotts, but they do respond well to training and actually seem more inteligent than their Dad (my big Rott Zack)......who has been a great guard-dog and only ever nipped the arm of a fencebuilder entering at the gate, because he was coming uninvited to the house, and Zack hadn't been introduced to him by me before, Zack could have easily done alot more damage but he backed off nicely when told to....

The fencebuilder wasn't hurt so much and was mainly concerned about Rabies, but was ok after I told him Zack has a yearly Rabies shot and showed him the immunisation certificate was up to date, gave the guy the day off on full pay after dressing the wound (which healed pretty quick).....and he was back the next day to work, but you can bet he told all the other workers/friends/locals/family not to go to my house uninvited/unescorted.....so in some ways a small incident like this can help keep strangers out.....

The dogs are fine with friends and family once introduced, but I wouldn't let them hang with my children or any one elses unless under very close supervision.....my dogs won't put up with anyone sticking their fingers in their eyes or messing with them unless they know that person well, and that person is prepared to be as physical as they can be back.....that is why with these 2 breeds mentioned it is important to always be able to assert yourself as the 'Alpha dog'....to be able to teach and control them well...

A good guard dog should be a great tool and companion a good deterant against personal physical danger and theft.......and if needed a weapon.....

I agree with the rare breed mastiffs. I own two of these bad mofos, a male and a female. These are not my dogs, however.

they are South African Boerboels (South African Mastiff).

They are bred to protect farms in SA from intruders and wild animals. There are all sorts of stories of them taking out wild animals in the bush. They are VERY family oriented and do not really like many outsiders. However if introduced properly they are very accepting. The key to breeds like this is the training. You have to have 110% control because if something goes down.. It's not pretty. The most loving dogs I've ever owned!

Boerboels ftw!

Those in the know use Geese.

Me, I do rescue Dobies.

Had some problems with gang members in MY FOOKIN HOOD.
My dobie mix kept the home fires safe in my absence and I didn't have to shoot the lil peckers. (gang bangers)
I owe her big time.

I usually trust what the dog thinks - if she likes somebody - it's a good sign. This one is pretty smart.

My last Doberman was LARGE red male - aptly named Clyde (the glide) - Proof not all dobies are bright - but again all heart and no BS. Clyde would on command, "get the kitty" - and to the kittys dismay, bring the kitty to me. (Cats sometimes need a reminder to come when called) Kitty and Clyde were inseperable a lil later. And kitty learned to come on command. (eventually) lol

"I" would say that a "TRUE" American Pit Bull Terrier bred from "TRUE" lines such as Colby, Hammonds, Crenshaw, Carver, Maloney, Wallace, Wilder, Lightner, Patrick or Boudreaux blood WOULD NOT BITE THE S**T OUT OF SOMEONE.

Now an American Staffordshire Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier would. But it wouldn't be its very first action.

I ask anyone from these boards that want to know more about "TRUE" American Pit Bull Terriers and their nature to google any of those names that I listed followed by the words American Pit Bull Terrier.

Merits to all.

All time baddass guard dog: Wolf Hybrids. Not to be fucked with. Big as the Irish Wolfhound, but N.American wolf baddass. Very loving and family oriented, but you gotta be in control.

That RR/BM was sweeeet. Might be my next dog.

Currently running a GSD/Akita mix. They are smart and dependable (a little seperation anxiety, though).
One time cable guy(mexican) came in to the backyard to disconnect, buddy opened the door and dog ran straight out. Mexican was hanging off the fence and dog was barking with two foot gap, keeping him at bay.

But training proper is crucial. With the 'Shepherds' being a part of the family is important too. Are you looking for a family guard dog, or a junk yard dog?

In Germany the training of a Schutzhund is serious and dedicated business!

i would say pit bulls are bad for guard dog in the respect they are not bred to be human aggressive... in the development of this breed animals that showed human aggression were killed. they are however extremely loyal and scary looking to an intruder. my dogs would never bite a human and would take extreme training to go against they're bred temperment... same thing as am staffs... but i will tell you, a thief would think twice about breaking in if he saw a big pit bull barking at him. they are quite ferocious looking when you get them startled! lol. ive seen some great looking guard dog pit bull crosses however that you wouldnt want to piss off... Bandogge mastiffs are pit bull mastif crosses, or even pit/dobie, pit/rott crosses would be good.

Another vote for German Shepherds. I had 2 Shepherd/mutt crosses for 12 years each, big dogs with the deep scarey bark of a shepherd, shepherd brains, and no health or hip problems. They'd scare the bejeepers out of strangers, get their hackles up, and look intimidating as hell. Never hurt a flea. During intervals of mourning - dogless - I had a breakin each mourning period.
Right now I have a Border Collie, smarter than me, but no threat to any trespassers. Also have a mutt who does bark and gets the collie to run over, but I wouldn't call either of them a deterrent..

Any dog with teeth can bite. Depends on the situation really. I have two pits, one long leg & one short leg. Now after seeing the posts of dogs I'm not even sure if there pure pits. The thing is that in California if your dog bites anyone for any reason no matter what you can get sued & your dog put down, unless your a cop with a cop dog. So check the laws in your state.

THANK YOU dearly for posting this. This is 100% on point. The common person would of quickly mistaken those dogs for American Pit Bull Terriers.

Your post is so valuable.
