Irish- That is a mad awesome bass bro, I love the natural wood, gives it a funk and an attitude. Is that an Ibanez? My buddies Ibanez 5-string looks just like that except its flat black/almost velvet colored you can see the woodgrain sort of like that its awesome. Good shit man.

hell yeah, im glad you like it Mcgee! I actually built it myself. I took the neck off an old fender my buddy had and built the body and installed all the electronics. The Pickups are seymore Duncan 1/4 pounders [basically American Jazz pickups] It's a pretty awesome bass although i'd like to change the neck and Bridge eventually. it's a somewhat small bass because it is made completely of Zebra wood which is rediculously heavy. it give a pretty snappy tone. i love it :]

Irish - Excuse my ignorance but where can you find Zebra wood? I love the construction on that man, its definitely quality, I love homemade instruments although I've not built one myself.

Well it's an exotic African wood so it's kind of hard to come by unless your in a major city. I got mine from a company called Southern Lumber, Im not sure if it's anywhere out of California. It's expensive too, the wood alone for this project cost about 250 buck. When i bought it, the wood was 26 dollars a board-foot, which is one foot, by one foot, by one inch. I would have made it bigger [heavier uhhhg] but it would have been a good deal more expensive.

the bridge is a piece of trash :[ and it looks cheesey too. thats the only part im reall unsatisfied with. The neck isn't the greatest, but im so used to it [about 5 years on it] that i love it. but i would like to get a graphite neck because the bass doesn't balance perfectly. again, i've gotten used to the little bit of neck dive it has, but i think if i changed it it would be better.

you've got a hellava drum set man, im way jealous, i love drumming. Im super into hip hop and rap and im all about the bass and drums. I actually just wrote one of my best raps about 20 minutes ago. trying to seal it up :]

Irish I would recommend the Leo Quann Badass bridge for that bass. It did wonders for my MexiJazz, and I had it installed string-through, which Jazzes never were, and it makes some kind of difference, my friends agree. The Bartolinis help too.

Irish - I'll have to get some pictures for you, I got some on a memory card I dont have pictures of the new cymbals though (the splash and the 16" thin crash) I've got them of the guitars amps and drums though I'll look for them. But I love the PDP man, these drums (need new heads, already!) have such an awesome sound to them, and let me tell you, these cymbals f*ckin rock man!!! Rock on Irish!

:rasta: im actually debating between that exact bridge and a Kahler tremelo bridge!

im leaning towards the Kahler tremelo because....well.....IT'S A WHAMMY BAR!!! except it quite a bit more expensive and i'll have to route out a spot for it to fit.

My neck is from a mexican jazz. it's just sanded down really thin. Surprisingly the action satys good and i dont have to adjust the truss rod too often. i thought it might bow a lot when i did it originally...

heres some pictures of the body.

Heady - I never really played the whammy bar that much, but I guess its pretty cool, although I don't play the guitar that often.

Irish - Looking at that body in the woodshop is making me feel the need to go out and grab some wood to make a guitar body!!!

I think a fretless bass sounds better than a whammy-bass.

How do you cut the zebra wood into the shape of the body? whats the whole process cost start to finish? I dont know anything about making guitars, but I would like to.

Here is my B.C Rich guitar with a marijuana leaf on front and back. The guitar was originally blue but the paint was stripped off and leafs were put on about 4 or 5 years ago.I havent played with it in a long time though but just thought I would show it.Peace

how about Les Claypool, he's got like 3 fretless whammy'd basses :biglaugh:

Well i first had to glue all the pieces of wood together to make one piece big enough to sut the body out of. Then i just put the design on the wood and cut her out with a band saw. All the cut outs for the pickups, potentiometers and neck were dont with a Milling machine, but if i made another one i'd use a router with a template instead. I would have made a neck too, but i was pretty young when i built this and i dont thin it would have turned out good then [or even now for that matter].

as for cost, this was pretty cheap because i used old parts. a new neck would have cost about 150 bucks to make or 350 to buy and a new bridge would have been anywhere from 50 to 300 bucks. so factor that in. That being said the wood was 250 [with a little left over] the pickups were about 130, the potentiometers were about 30 i think and the other odds and ends like input jacks strings blah blah blah the total was like 450 or so....i think.

did this with the remainder of the zebrawood. shifter knob for the Rx-7

Irish - You've inspired me to attempt to build my own guitar, I'll tell you how its progressing! hahah! might take me a year! and i love that shifter nob thats pretty psychedelic.

Bong - Did you put the leaves on the body and put lacquer over them? That is pretty damn funky.

awesome pics everyone!

Awesome!! It really isn't that hard. Just remember to measure everything 5 or 6 times before you make a major cut. Lack of planning will run the project astray or even destroy it. And if you considering constructing your own neck for the guitar too, Do tons of research on how to do it, different types, ect. because thats the hardest part of building any guitar. getting the shape, feel, and durability right could take many tried so be prepared to buy more wood and start over. Awesome though, keep me updated :)

Red - I'll have to check that out, I knew there was a word for people who make musical instruments just couldnt place my finger on it. Let me know how yours goes if you do end up getting that les paul kit, rock on.
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to RED145 again.

Irish - Yeah, most definately, measure 10 cut 1 hahaha carpenters rule of thumb no doubt, I probably wont start the project until the spring time but it will be a cool thing to keep an eye on, especially if anyone else reads this and is currently building one or can show pictures like you did of the different pieces disassembled.

much love to you all
