Thanks Delta9!
Thanks for stopping by and the compliment! IME the biggest key to success is getting a plant that is from a climate like where you want it to live. Eg indoor bonsai should be a subtropical plant, outdoor bonsai should be temperate plants unless you live in a region without snow during winter. Other than that most can take a severe beating.

If you take a chance this spring, let us know!

hey guys nice bonsai. i was wondering, what types of nutes are good for soil bonsai mums? can i just use a mixture of formulex, nitrozyme, and superthrive? or should i purchase a complete adult plant soil nute?

we used to use a specific bonsai feed (blue granules) twice a year. (will findout the NPK)... these days we'd use bio-biz, or sea-bird guano...

after this bonsai need a re-potting every 2-5 years (depending on species).

Hiya DocLeaf

Thanks for dropping by. I agree with you - more thinking than doing. That's the chinese cut and grow philosophy as opposed to the Japanese wire and bondage approach. I like the chinese approach, I always have better luck if I'm not trying to second guess and "correct" the plant's natural inclinations regularly. Real nice larch and mungo! - Mongo like mungo :biglaugh: About repotting - I have some that haven't been repotted for many years. They have to really ask me first!

Hiya HiKing
I take it you're talking 420 bonsai mums? I use 1/4 strenght seaweed only when they start showing yellow, and I don't give them much light - one 40 watt bulb only. If you don't give them much light, they don't need much food. When you want to take cuts, a few weeks before put them under stronger light and give them 1/2 str veg nutes or 1/2 str seaweed. Once you take cuts put them back under the low light. Some folks trim and transplant monthly, I let them go 3-4 months - when the 1/4 str nutes don't hold them I trim the tops and the roots and repot. There are many ways to approach bonsai 420 mums, this is what seems to work for me. Thanks for stopping by!

I just picked up a nice little Korean Boxwood that I am going to try MGJ. I'll post some pics once I get it tied and pruned back.

I also took a cutting of a purple smokebush (love that name).... that could be a decent one.

I figured that once spring came, cuttings would root fairly easily, I keep taking cuts from a couple of things that have caught my eye, but can't get any to root at all.

Great thread

Great thread

I love Bonsai , and really want to start up again ... I had one that was 10yrs old when I got it and I had it another 8. Then vaca came and it went. So to make up for burning the thing up , they bought me a new one. The old one was planted from rock to rock with a waterfall build in , like in the mall. as yrs went by i built bigger waterfalls and kept it perfect. Paid someone to stay and watch it for me whenever I went away. The new one is a box with a seed in it.

So between this thread , and a friend and I were discuss'n the fruit trees around the yard , I've decided to try to grow a few. I hope . So I'll be on the hunt for something to cut. I'm in the tropics , so we have lots of fruit. I have mango , lime , and papaya (?sp) right out the door I want to try large and small trees with. And a Few others that have small leaves that may work for bonsai. Plus I have the nursery guy fix'n me up with a small tangerine tree.

here's the first thing I planted here 2 yrs ago.

on the right is a palm dug out of the woods about a week ago . But the left one is my Pineapple, 2 yrs after i cut the top off the dole I bought in the store . Just repotted it in that nice free pot. it has a screen in it and a rez. on the bottom and she 's love'n life.

anyway I'll post a few pix of any cuttings I get.

Mr. Green Thumbs ... I mean Jeans ... those are all some sweet plants , as are all shown here. Very nice

P.S. My grandfather sold captain Kangaroo a house once when I was a kid. I got to meet the whole cast at the house party (include'n Mr Greenjeans himself). That was about 30 yrs ago when they were hot. lol

Hiya packn!
You musta read my mind! Have a few to post tonight. Thanks for kicking off the dust!

Hiya gmt!
Well - that's the kicker, no? Some specimens are tough to root - what kind of plants are you trying, and how are you rooting them? I'll offer whatever suggestions I can. Hows this - let's all take a bong hit :bongsmi: :biglaugh:

Hiya Latitude18
Thanks for dropping in! Man, you had a serious project there!!! Yup, as with all things, eventually they pass away. I've never had one with a waterfall myself - must've been something to see. You don't happen to have any pictures do you???

Happy to have you aboard Latitude - feel free to hang out a while - would love to see some pics of your cuttings...

That was about 30 yrs ago when they were hot. lol

Too funny!!! Dayum, has it been that long??? :pointlaug

Ok, bonsai update. The plants tried to be understanding of my ignoring them last summer, but some of them had top die back from needing a transplant just a bit too long.

The 3 maples below were all hit. The one in the largest pot - an experiment to see if i can force a bud out to eventually fill in some of the empty space - that one has the old pot at it's side - should be enough extra root zone to force something...

Here's my large myrtle: last year and this past weekend.

I had 2 micro roses heavily overgrown, so I made a bunch of plantings splitting the root mass.

And the redwood I'm grooming for a macro bonsai - last year and this past weekend.

She's been in that same pot and soil her whole life - 15 years - I took pity this winter and gave her the scraps of my cabinet feedings, and look at the growth this spring! This means trunk diameter should increase a lot this year, so this fall should be the time to air layer the trunk and get it ready for it's new life as a large midget. And also a demonstration of what not to do to keep a tree small, don't feed it your table scraps!!!

That's all for tonight, thanks for stopping by my little garden... -MGJ

Mr GreenJeans , thanks for the welcome , and as for the pix , I'll have to look. Everything is either lost on a old HD , or in storage 1300 miles away :yoinks: Keeping it company are, my 430w light (never out of the box),all my ferts and meters , that store bought Bonsai seed starter kit I got for them Killing My Baby, lol :bat:

but , this is the reason for the post...
One of the things I have tracked down is Superthirve. And you stated you use it also. What I get, from the lable insructions, is basicly 3oz/100gal or 1/4tsp/gal . Question is , how do you use it , and when. Like do you use when trying to root cuttings like I'm going to take today. And will it hurt my 420 germs and sprouts. And does it replace H2O2 , if you use that. And , and , and ...

what kind of solution do you use to root cuttings , if any ?

Thanks
