Abby's Bud Shack

Howdy Folks!
Just a quick update tonight, as things are changing rapidly here at the Bud Shack. Grow 7 is going very well, and I am preparing for the switch to flowering mode... it is at most 2 weeks away. One of the preparations for this grow's switch to flower was to set both of the big lights together. Here's a pic of the revised flower area currently in vegetative mode.

I use 1K Switchable Ballast lights, they are just so easy instead of switching out ballasts or paying a premium for conversion lamps. Just stick in the bulb type you need, flip the switch on the ballast, and your all set. I also air cool my hoods to help keep the temps down.

I have also seperated the known males from the gals, and placed them in a seperate area. Some of the kids are still too young to show their sex yet, but I should be able to determine everyone by weeks end. Obviously, the sex on all of the large plants are known, and as you can tell from the pic below, there's a lot of big gals!

Here's a couple of pics of some of the gals... nothing fancy, just a couple of snapshots:

BOG's BMR

Weeweeman's Sour Gum (BG x SB)

My very own Big Cindy (c99 x BGxBCBB)

Put together a little bubble cloner, was quite fun and in my typical Abby Normal fashion I did my own thing... but the idea is based on the dime a dozen bubble cloners. When I have more time I'll show you mine... that is if you show me yours first! :yoinks: I was talking about cloners... what were you thinking about? Actually I'll have to show you mine later, too late to do anything else tonight.

A quick shout out to:
RED145 - Thanks, the Soma turned out okay, although I won't be sampling any more for a few more weeks, perhaps months. What I did try was very full bodied flavor, sort of like a hashy peanut butter taste. We'll see what a good cure does.

ilcstoning - Anytime... and yeah, my cats are many things, security guards, pruners, CO2 units, lap warmers, too many to mention!

estayapi - Welcome to my Bud Shack. Sit down, take a load off your feet, and have a read, you'll find the answer to your question just a few posts up. Glad you like the pics!

Y'all have to excuse me, as now that I have had the bud cellar for a year, I really only smoke cured bud, nothing else compares. I am truly blessed to have a modest selection of flavors to choose from, with more variety's on the way! It's amazing to think my first harvest was just a year ago this October. Seems like only yesterday... of course my short term memory does seem to be failing me at times. I wonder why: :biglaugh:

That's it for tonight, got to be up in just a few hours!

Damn you are truly blessed with a green thumb. Not many people can grow like you after a year.

Hey There!

A quick shout out to those that have visited the shack since my last posting...

Budgrinder - Thanks for those kind words, but really the pleasure is all mine! The great part of this little hobby is I get soo much pleasure from it in soo many different ways!

Salakavala - The funny part is I have always disliked "gardening", and can't stand yardwork. But for reasons I'm not quite sure of, I do seem to have some minor success growing cannabis. It has to be the plants...

Stewie - Greetings, thanks for stopping by! Variety is indeed the spice of life, and I am so very thankful to have a few different tastes and flavors to choose from. Last night I opened a jar of c99 from my first harvest back in October of 2004. It was amazing to hear the lid "pop" when I opened it, and to smell the fruity fragrance of pineapple.... it's like I was popping a bottle of Dom Perignon '52. Nothing beats a good cure! :yummy:

immortal - Thanks... me too! This is the most plants I have ever done, so it's going to be interesting! :chin:

Today, I'd like to introduce you to several more of the girls who make up this Grow 7. So without further ado here are the gals:

Lifesaver x Sour Bubble 1BX

Sour Bubble 1BX In-Cross

Weeweeman's The Big Sour (BubblegumxBC Big Bud x Sour Bubble 1BX)

In just a few minutes I will be repotting the biggest gals into their 15" flowering containers as the countdown to flowering begins. I have slated next Saturday the 24th as Flowering Day, that way everyone should be finished by Thanksgiving. I have removed one more male from the girls area, and have confirmed two more females, it looks like I may have close to 20 girls for this run! :woohoo:

More later...

Bubble Bubble, No Toil, No Trouble!

Bubble Bubble, No Toil, No Trouble!

Howdy!
Thought some of you might like to see my version of the standard bubble cloner, with almost all of the parts readily available at WalMart, the larger tubing you will have to get at your local hardware store. Here's a shot of the supplies needed:

  • MediaMate Organizer
  • Fusion Spray Paint - Black
  • Aquarium Pump (60 gal)
  • Standard Aquarium Tubing
  • 3 Way T Connector
  • 14" Aquarium Bubble Stone
  • 3/8" (internal) 1/2" (external) diameter Tubing
  • 1/2" Drill Bit, 1/4" Drill Bit & Drill
  • Box Cutter or Sharp Knife

I chose the MediaMate container from Walmart as the cloning tub due to its bottom configuration, having ridges on either side of its interior bottom that form a track. There is a plastic piece that fits into the track and acts like a bookend to hold whatever media you put into the case. For our purposes, the device will be used to help secure the bubble stone, and we will therefore NOT have to use any glue or silicone or suction cups with this method. You could also drill a small hole through the raised ridge of the track, and use cable wraps to secure the stone. I cheated, and obtained an extra "bookend" piece for each container, allowing me to "sandwich" the bubble stone inside the container.

Drill a small hole into each of the plastic "bookend" pieces as shown in the picture above, then insert the extruding nozzle ends of the air stone into each hole. Insert aquarium tubing into the air stone nozzle through the plastic holder, and then firmly seat each plastic holder into the bottom track making sure that the air stone is firmly sandwiched between them. Here is what the finished inside should look like:

Before I go too far, I should mention that the very first thing I did was to paint the clear plastic MediaMate container using the Fusion Black Spray Paint. I chose the Fusion paint as it was specifically made for plastics, was easily available at WalMart, and it did a super job for me drying very quckly! The picture below shows the MediaMate container, with an original version on the left, and a painted one on the right.

For a cleaner look, you might want to drill the lid first before painting, I found the plastic lid to be very thin and would leave rough plastic edges and trash that needed to be lightly sanded smooth. Using the 1/2" drill bit to make holes into the lid, I was able to space 22 clone sites comfortably into one container. The tubing is measured using it's external diameter of 1/2" for our purposes, but at the hardware store it is referenced by it's internal diameter of 3/8". You may want to use varying lengths of tubing to hold the clone depending upon the clones length, I found cutting 1.5" - 2" sections worked best for me. Make sure you split the tubing, this way you can easily remove the stem and roots without damaging the clone. It also allows a bit of "play" to more easily fit the tubing into the holes. Here's the finished outside:

During my research into the bubble cloners, I found a wide variety of methods as to what water mix to use... being a simple guy I chose the simple solution, just plain old tap water, nothing added. Several folks raved about that method in various posts, so I figured I'd give it a go myself... I'm a firm believer in the KISS principle, the less work the better!! Bubble, Bubble, No Toil, No Trouble! :canabis:

You can adjust the water level depending upon your specific needs, I chose to take mine almost all the way to the top, with each clone's stem submerged at least an inch underwater. The original pump I purchased was not powerful enough for my taste, so I bought a larger unit made for up to 60 gal tanks, the more bubbles the merrier! Here's a peek inside:

All that is left now is to take the clones, and then let the bubbler do its job. Again, I relied on the KISS principle and used no scarification, cloning powder or gel, just cut them and placed them into their respective holders (you can easily label each hole, and keep an accurate record of each clone). No dome is necessary, and I have observed mine continuosly growing with no signs of wilt. Today is day 4 for the clones, and I have already observed the first roots growing! This bubble cloner method is so simple and easy, why would anyone do it any other way?

I haven't actually hooked up the other unit to the pump, so I can't answer that question yet. But I found another 60 gal capacity pump for $10 from WalMart so I'm prepared either way.

Cool Abby that answered a few questions I was just starting to think about recently. I'm considering a really simple 1 cutting bubler.

Hey GMT - You should build one, but I wouldn't limit myself to just one cutting, it's so easy to use you'll be wanting to do as many as you can fit! The one thing that has amazed me about this bubble cloner is the growth rate of the clones, mine have been growing since the day I cut them, there seems to be no "downtime" with this process.

Note to self - Grow 7 switched to flower mode today, 9/20/05. It has begun.... :woohoo:

Good info Abby I had to buy one as my building skills are much lower than my growing skills. Show us the first clones off her.

immortal - Thanks! It's going to be interesting as I have never tried anything quite so... ambitious. I'm afraid I'll need all the luck I can get! It's going to be a monster grow for me, as at least 7 of the big gals were topped. They are putting out lots of budsites as you can see:

SmokeyPufmaster - Hey Smokey, you should really try the bubble cloner, it is so easy to put together. All you need is to drill some holes in plastic, cut some small pieces of tubing, and attach a few hoses. It's easy...

As requested, here is a pic of the same batch of clones now on day 6. Roots are just barely starting on some, nothing major yet. But the cuttings have been growing quite well, specifically at the internodes as you can see below:

Well folks, Grow 7 is officially into flowering mode, even though I still have 3 small plants that have not shown sex yet. I wasn't going to hold up the grow for them, especially since several of the gals just had their 60 day birthday. I have 16 girls now housed in their flowering containers, which are 15" pots from WalMart that can hold up to 1.25 cu ft each. I found a great potting soil at Home Depot (Lambert's Potting Mix), and used it for the entire repotting. Tonight, everyone got a feeding of Tiger Bloom, I like to use it at the start of flowering mode to give them a shot of trace elements. They will receive only one, perhaps two more feedings of the Pure Blend Pro Grow, from that point on it will be Pure Blend Pro Bloom for the next several weeks.

Here's a little peek in on some of the gals after their first day of flower mode:

Greets mariman - Glad you liked the info... and the plants! :yummy:

Howdy sackoweed!

Well Gang, it's now been 8 days since the clones were cut and placed into the new bubble cloner, let's take a look at them now:

If you compare this picture with the one taken from the first day you can really see the growth that has taken place, especially amongst the cuttings that had no tops. I really love this method of cloning, as the cuts need no dome or misting... but as you can see there is no sign of wilt! I leave the pump running constantly, and the clones are kept under normal incandescant bathroom lighting. And what of the roots? Let's take a look inside:

And to think it's just plain old tap water... nothing fancy at all, but look at those roots starting. Man, it doesn't get any easier than this! :woohoo:

I need to finish the other cloner tomorrow, and take the rest of the cuttings from the Grow 7 gals before they start budding. And how are the big gals doing? Take a look for yourself, I finally took a few pics while they were awake. Here's the biggest, a Sour Gum babe:

How about this sweetheart, my as yet unnamed Lifesaver x Sour Bubble cross:

The gals are really kicking ass, and you can see the amount of new growth as evidenced by the light green coloration:

I had to move up the lights again as the stretch is on... here's a peek at all the babes:

Roll 'em if you got 'em!
