Hey Budgrinder - Glad you like the kitty and the lineup... I am quite excited about this grow being the largest one I have ever attempted, and with the new crosses I just can't wait to see how they develop! Here's what they look like now after 4 days of being under the big light:
At this point all but two of the seedlings have broken surface, the last two should be up tomorrow. I had excellent germination rates this run since going back to the tried and true paper towel method, The c99xIce were the last seeds to pop, taking almost 5 days more than the jhxsb. Yesterday I transplanted the six largest plants into 3 gallon pots where they will stay until a week before flower, at which time I will move them into their final flowering pots.
The last Soma Lavender is still not ready, so it looks to be another week before she is harvested. To look at her you would think she is primed to be cut, but a close check of the trichs reveal too many clear with only a small amount amber. Here's a couple of pics of her in all her sugar coated glory:
Im takin a seat next to that lavender Abby. Forgive me if I take a sample when your not looking. This is gonna be one helluva grow Abby, even im excited about this one.
Hey immortal - help yourself... even when I am looking, I'm always willing to share!
Now is one of my favorite times of a grow, when the plant starts to really take off... and every time you walk into the room the view has changed. I love to just go in and watch the kids (plants) for awhile, there is something very soothing about just hanging with the plants.
The new run is progressing well, and it is interesting to see three different stages of growth happening all at once. There is just one remaining c99xice left to break surface, and today I noticed preflowers starting on several of the larger kids. While it is still too early to tell for sure, my first impression is they are both females. With 29 total plants in this run, even a 50% ratio gives me a bunch of babes to photograph!
Howdy Folks!
Peeked in on the Soma Lavender earlier and the light coming through her window was just perfect, so I thought I would try a few "natural light" shots shot without any flash or external light source. Makes for a nice effect.... what do you think?
Hey immortal - She is getting closer day by day, I anticipate harvesting her this weekend. Just want a few more clear trichs to turn cloudy!
dRbreiT0r - You love Soma? Well, then this pic is for you:
Howdy Gang!
Things are really growing here at the Shack, with the current grow of BOG based crosses really starting to take off. Here's a pic of the kids basking under the 1K MH light:
The largest plants around the outside are primarily the Big Sour (BGxBCBB x SB) and Sour Gum (BG x SB) crosses provided by Weeweeman, along with one of my own crosses. the Big Cindy (BGxBCBB x c99). It's hard to appreciate just how big these kids are getting, but here's an example of the scale of a Big Sour leaf against my hand:
These are going to be some big booty babes eh? Speaking of babes, it looks like I have 4 confirmed females and 1 male so far of the ones showing preflowers, but we have so many more to go. It is so amazing to see the growth rate under the big light, as compared to the CFL's. The middle generation is just kicking ass, and will need to be transplanted in the next few days. Take a look for yourself:
I'll be starting to take some cuttings of the larger plants soon, just waiting for the branching to get a bit more growth before I do. I have plenty of time for pruning and trimming, as the current plan is to flower all of the kids at once. Of course, plans may change depending on how many girls I wind up with.
For those of you wondering what may be coming up next, I am thrilled to announce I have planned the next grow already. The Bud Shack will be having an OzFest, featuring the creations of the "duckman from down under", WallyDuck. A very special thanks to WallyDuck for providing his genetics for the next run... can't wait to shoot some Australian babes!
Stay tuned for more.... same plant time, same plant channel!
Abby
Lot's of pictures for tonights post, as we chronicle the end of one grow, and the beginning of another. The last of the Soma Lavender has been harvested, and I think it looks fantastic! Take a look for yourself...
Trichome development was very good, rivaling that of the Sour Bubble 1BX, although it does not have that wonderful sour lemon aroma of the SB. I find it very hard to describe the exact aroma, suffice it to say it smells like some very good bud. As for taste, the previously harvested Soma Lavender reminded me of peanut butter... it will be a few weeks before I sample this girl, but she looks mighty tasty!
Since this was my last chance to shoot some real bud for awhile, I thought I would have a little fun, and came up with a nice little picture of my Holy Grail, the self replicating Golden Bud plant that produces a harvestable bud every 3 weeks. Isn't she a beauty?
That about wraps up the Soma run, and now it is full speed ahead on the current grow. Today I picked up a new Agrosun Blue MH lamp for the BOG crosses that my friend Weeweeman put together from some BOG seeds I had sent to him. He really did a kick ass job on the cross, because these kids look fantastic. Of course they are 50% BOG, and that has some rather unique advantages. Take a look at the current grow's 1'st generation Sour Gum and Big Sour from above:
The two plants on the far left side are both Big Sour males, with all the rest being female, except for the last one on the bottom right, which is still undecided. While they each exhibit different degrees of branching and leaf size/shape, they all show the trademark thick stem and large leaf size indicative of BOG's genetics. I would like to thank Bushy for stopping by, and please.... the pleasure is all mine. I am a big fan of the Bogster, his plants all seem to exhibit great root and stem development, which I believe is crucial to achieving optimal results. I also really like BOG's Sour Bubble, the high and taste and flavor and trichomes and... it's just mighty fine weed!
The only drawback to the SB 1BX I grew was the branching was too tight, and confined to the main trunk. The buds were heavily covered with trichs, but were relatively smaller in size than expected, resulting in a less than desirable yield. Shame, considering that the smoke is superlative. So, the mad scientist in me decided to see what would happen if a male SB was to knock up a bunch of different gals, such as Lifesaver, Jock Horror, and Sweet Cindy. Well, we're going to be finding that out right here at the Bud Shack as Grow 7 takes center stage. Here's another shot of the Sour Gum and Big Sour kids, this time showing the branching and stem development:
I topped the tallest of the gals this evening, and will be doing the same to the others once they reach the same approximate height. These kids will see a lot of trimming and training as we wait for the 2nd and 3rd generations to catch up. The tallest gal is a Sour Gum, and she is my favorite plant of that group. She has very good branching, and if the buds retain the SB flavor and stone this may be the gal I was looking for... time will tell. Here's a look:
The second and third generation kids are doing great, and I anticipate putting everyone into flower before October arrives. The second generation was repotted several days ago, and are now at the rapid growth rate stage and should be starting to show sex within the next few days. This middle group of plants is made up of my Big Cindy (c99xbgbcbb), LS x SB, HH x ice, and some SB F2's. The last group is coming along nicely, and includes the JH x SB, the sc99 x SB, and some c99 x ice. There won't be any time for topping or trimming these, and they will be left au' natural! Here's a peek in on the little ones:
The really bushy babe on the bottom left is one of my Big Cindy gals, and is my favorite plant of that generation. She has everything so far I had hoped for from the cross, sturdy frame, short and squat build with tons of branching. And yes, she is a confirmed female. So far... so good!
A shout out the the Bogmeister, thanks for stopping by big fella! I am mighty glad my proctologist doesn't have fingers the size of your leaves... that "finger" is well over a foot long... OUCH!!!
dRbreiT0r - Great job on your Soma, your plants look very nice and frosty indeed! Best of luck on your grow.
Here's wishing all of you in the USA a Happy and Safe holiday weekend, and special thoughts and prayers to those less fortunate suffering through a terrible tragedy on the Gulf Coast. Please remember to do unto others as you would have them do unto you!
Hello Abby, I just want to give you props for you work and effort in showing us your wares. This is an excellant thread to follow to watch plants in action.
Greetings Friends!
I see there have been a few visitors to the Bud Shack the past few days, a quick shout out to Nuggy, immortal, natefrog, Budgrinder, weeweeman, SmokeyPufmaster, and ilcstoning... thanks for stopping by everyone! It always thrills me to see that folks are still enjoying the thread and the pics, at times I think it's more rewarding to see your comments than anything else. Thank you all for the very kind words, but really it's not me, all the credit goes to the plants. I am nothing more than a facilitator, a butler if you will, just seeing to the needs of my charges and providing them whatever resources they may require. And I have help... although at times I think they are more of a hinderance than help, especially when the plants are small and delicate. Allow me to introduce you to my four legged combination leaf trimmer / CO2 units:
Nibbler 1
Nibbler 2
Cannabis Cat
These are my secret weapons, and they love nothing more than to hang out in the plant room and chill with the plants. I don't let the nibblers in until the plants are big enough to handle some "pruning", but the Cannabis Cat can always be found near the plants, big or small, as he is a lover, not a biter!
So good to see my friend Weeweeman has dropped by, you have a right to be a proud papa indeed! As I have posted here before, Weeweeman did the Sour Gum (BG x SB) and Big Sour (BGxBCBB x SB) crosses that I have going now. They are really looking good, and exhibit some trademark features of the Sour Bubble such as thick stems, large leaves, and vertical branching. The vertical branching is not something I like in my grows, and is the one feature that can easily be corrected through pruning/training. If you look at the picture above, my Cannabis Cat is guarding the Sour Gum and Big Sour plants, and you should be able to get a good idea of the size of these kids. Yesterday, I topped all of the remaining Big Sour and Sour Gum gals, and will let them concentrate on branching and root development for one week, then I'll take some cuttings and transplant them into their flowering pots in preparation for the light switch. While I have not totally made up my mind, they will stay at least one week in the flowering pots before any light change is made, giving them time to expand their roots as well as to grow out the areas where the cuttings were taken. Here's what they look like now, roughly day 45 of veg.
Here's a picture of them all together before I pulled out the males from two days ago:
All of the second and third stage plants have been repotted into their vegetative containers, where they will stay until a week or two before flowering, at which time they will be moved into the large 15" flowering pots. I will not transplant any males, I only keep them around long enough to pollinate some girls and store some of their manly essence, then it is off to the boneyard for them. I have already removed the males from the Sour Gum and Big Sour grow, and placed both male Big Sours into the larger veg area with the smaller plants. Here they will stay until it is time to flower, then they will go into confinement away from any flowering gals. I will not allow any "sexually active" males into the flower room, which should answer one of the questions posed by ilcstoning.
The other questions posed were about the soil and mixture, as well as the nutes I use. I want to make sure that you all understand, I do my own thing... I don't use a chart, measuring tools, or ph meters. For me, it's just not necessary. I do use Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil, it is the foundation for everything. I have found the best results are to mix the Ocean Forest with another, less expensive growing medium, and have finally settled on the Jungle Grow from Lowes. I use roughly a 2:1 mix of Jungle Grow to Ocean Forest, the high wood content of the Jungle Grow provides perfect moisture rention and aeration and keeps the Ocean Forest from drying and leaving a small gap at the pot edges. I do like to use the hydroton, or geolites (small round, clay balls) to enhance the aeration capability of the soil mix, and even use them in my seedling containers. As for ratio, I don't have one, just try to keep a few balls in each handfull.
Picture of 2nd and 3rd stage immediately after transplant
As for nutes, I recently made a switch to using the Pure Blend Pro line of products. We'll see how they do this grow. No real reason for the switch other than to try something different, but I do like the smell of these nutes compared to the Fox Farm products. Everything is done by feel, I basically let the plants tell me how much they need, and when they need it. I always alternate a feeding with a watering, and may skip a feeding if the plant had too much the time before (always keep a close eye on the leaf tips). I also mist my plants at least once a day with plain water, sometimes more. I do not do a foliar feed, just simply some moisture to help clean the leaves and increase humidity. All of my plants are grown inside in an air conditioned environment, so I have to be watchful for dry leaves due to the lower humidity levels.
Picture of 2nd and 3rd stage two days after transplant
The last pic above was taken a few moments ago, the big fellas in the back are the two male Big Sours, the one larger plant from the background in the transplant picture from two days ago was a female Big Cindy, and has been moved over to be with the SB cross gals. I love a good transplant, as if properly done it can kick start a plants growth rate like nothing else!
I hope I answered all the questions posed, and again, thanks to all of you dropping by with a comment to share! Now for some dinner before the football game starts!
Abby
PS. I just wanted to say Thank YOU to Wallyduck for the gift of his latest creations, some Pine Orange and c99 x Blueberry. I can't wait to get them started... thank you again my friend!
