What's new

A few things that I've learned about growing in coco with a drip systm DTW

Holy shit...

Was on the fence about what medium to use and then I came across this thread.

Unlike 90% of the scumbags who asked questions before reading the first page, I had to read each page from beginning to end before asking anything. What an amazing thread.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed. This thread deserves to live on.

Is HGO still around? Wondering how the 100% perlite went as I saw a post by "Doneit" where he used 100% perlite top feed DTW and swore it was the money shot.

I was going to convert from soil bushes to SOG flood tables with hydroton until I came across this thread and Ironhead's...

Thinking about doing x48 1 gal's per 5x5 table. Cut clones, FIM, and flip as fast as possible. 2000w per table in XXXL 8's.

Any suggestions?

The classic rule is your medium to plant ratio doesn't matter as long as the canopy is correct. That is generally true in coco -to a point. I've found over the years that using 5" square containers did result in lower yield. And containers over 3 gallons usually end up in very tall plants. Between those extremes you have a lot of room to play with. Also if you do say 1 to 4 plants and have a two-month veg time it's kind of not worth it. But if you do, say, anywhere from 16 to 9 plans you have a much shorter veg time. 16-12 in 1 gal, 9 in 1-2 gal. If hand watering, then pure coco with no drainage material is sufficient as long as you have a well draining tray. I've used many materials for drainage and found that I liked Coco chunks the best. Anywhere from 2 inches high from the bottom all the way up to two thirds of the container. One thing that I really enjoy is filling the chunks up halfway from the bottom, set the plant on top that is in pure coir and fill the rest with coir. That way you take care of the chunks need for more rinsing, you get an even higher water to air ratio versus coir, and the coir on top keeps the lower chunks from drying out too quickly in the early stages. This only works if you were doing multiple waterings per day and it also allows you to go really crazy with the amount of waterings per day. For instance you can do about six in my experience. My favorite is four, it wastes less. You can almost treat it the way you would hydroton.

Since I can't edit yet... another huge benefit of the chunks is that when they dry out they are extremely light especially compared to coir. So cleanup is a breeze.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Big shout out to HGO! I followed the advice on this thread 2 years ago and haven't looked back. I can proudly say I'm absolutely 'crush'n it this run. I've just read the entire thread again today and have picked up 4 more tips to for my next run. Once again big ups too HGO and everyone else that contributed to make this thread what it is today.

Peace!

Glad to see you back posting in the thread HGO.

Just fired up 4k and looking forward to this first coco grow.

I wanted to go with a lower plant count, and bigger bushes however the space we ended up with is allot less than we planned for. No room to veg, only a small closest to keep a few moms and veg some clones in party cups.

That being said, I decided to "attempt" to follow your SOG thread you start a while back. Needless to say my attempt to FIM didnt work worth a fuck lmfao.

Anywho I have a habit of rambling so heres what I have going on.

Looking forward to seeing what you have on the go, and what you have changed since your last posts.

Im 36" away with 1k watters and plants that are 6" tall dude... i figured i would do the 'ol let em grow up to the plants and not bleech or stress them... is this wrong? They are not stretching or showing signs associated with not enough light. I also have 71 watts per sqft given the fact my tables are short...

nice room, looks real clean. i couldn't see in the pic, what are your pots sitting on? not just plywood right?

Hey man. The room is a complete disaster right now after changing the ventilation around 3 effin times. Im struggling real bad trying to get the air sorted out. I can get the room to the perfect temp but with the high air exchange it sucks every drop of humidity out. Might work out awesome in flower but it has stalled out the progression by at least a week or two on my veg side.

Anywho ill put up my journal today and explain in more detail so im not clogging up this thread.

Tables are DIY with vapor barrier covering them. I need to redo them as soon as thid round is done. The caulking i used is bubbling in some spots and i stepped on a few screws so now there is holes that have tuck tape on them. Its a ghetto table for sure but its doing the trick.

Always keep your lights as close to the plants as possible without damage, put a circulation fan in there as well

When my clones are rooted and hardened off they have a 6" fan every 2' in veg, the difference is noticeable if the fans aren't on

You might have 71W/sqft at 1ft but at that distance you're wasting light and growth time

Stretching them in veg is counterproductive ....They're just ticking over growing slowly

Yeah I wasn't intentionally stretching them. I was just saying if they weren't getting enough light they would be stretching wouldn't they? I had issues a few years back with roasting or bleaching plants so this time around I have decided to be a little more reserved.

Regardless your right. I dropped the lights down and we will see how she goes.

Nah man their are SE.

Bullshit of the situation is I was planning to buy all new lighting to start this project off... I sourced some cheap stuff from growlights.ca as they are way cheaper than most places. They just started selling DE combo's. Almost pulled the trigger until I found out their cheap Chinese ballasts are low frequency.

I said eff it. Ended up getting an insane deal on the reflectors from the local shop. Found x4 of the Solis-Tek ballasts on craigslist and didn't realize they were high frequency ballasts until a week ago. Fml. Going to add a room in the spring and I will definitely be going DE in that one.

to Bush Dr and HGO, can I know the exact nutrients you use from start to finish?

Its their skills as growers that makes them good at what they do. Not something out of a bottle..... or multiple bottles.... they have there own systems there own environments and their own genetics simply following someone else's recipe will never give you the success you seek..... your plants will tell you every element they need and when they need it, you could have the same bottles of nutrients as they use and if you cant read the plants you'll still do plenty of damage to your plants! before you ever actually learn how, when and the proper ratios to administer.....

what the fuck man! I know the fuck that I'm doing! is not my first grow and since moving to coco I've done quite some runs since I run multiple grow boxes, let me do my research and if I go wrong let me go wrong too..is the only way I learn! I just hate you commentators who come and rant without providing anything...I didn't ask you no question..gtfo...

Yea ok... right on... your profile screams newbie so does your plea for a start to finish nutrient profile from not one but two experienced growers...... Good Luck MASTER GROWER:) and my previous post was spot on! the best advice anyone can give you (Learn how to read your plants needs)
