^ thats good to know about the frosted bulbs.

I have never seen frosted HPS bulbs. I would think the frosting mite reduce some lumens but I have no idea on that.

Well thanks for the comments guys. I'll pick one up anyway and see how it goes. I'd have thought the frosting would reduce lumens too, but I don't know whether it would by a significant amount or not. I guess I'll find out soon.

bulb question

bulb question

Hello 70watters...
Quick question about these bulbs and possible even 150watts if you can help....
I was looking at Lowes at lights and i noticed there are MH and HPS bulbs whick were 70 watts and 150watts. They screw into medium (standard household) sockets.
**Do these bulbs need a ballast for how low the wattage is or can i use them in on my new socket i wired up.... i am a complete newbie atm so any links and help would greatly be appreciated. :thanks::smokeit:

looks good but next round of plants i'd get them closer to the bulb by making a reflector you can lower or get something to raise the plants up

Has anyone wired a capacitor into their 70 watt ballast? I would really like to do this as i am interested in keeping energy as minimal as possible. What rating would the capacitor have to be? I just can't find this info. Thanks.

make sure you dont already have one first, what you think might be the ignitor might be the cap, i think any 70w hps cap will work

Let's keep this thread alive guys!

I love seeing the pictures and harvest results of 70w grows. I've ordered my 70w hps now and I can't wait to get it up and running in my mini fridge.

I think this is the fridge that I have: http://suppliers.jimtrade.com/142/141304/53986.htm

A friend of mine found it in an old barn when he bought a new house, and he was going to throw it away. I said, "Hey, I might be able to get that working again. Do you mind if I take it?" and he agreed. I have no idea how old it is, but it smelt of old fish and has a few suspicious brown stains inside. That's all gone now though.

It's a couple of feet high, about a foot deep and a foot wide. I've gutted the thing so the only thing remaining is the shell and the door, and I've replaced the back of the fridge (which originally was expanding foam and plastic, about 3 inches deep) with a 1.5cm sheet of plywood. It seems perfect for a 70w. The only problem I have is that with such a limited amount of space I'm not sure how I'll fit a carbon filter in there.

Put the filter on the outside? I was originally going to have everything self-contained in my cab, but i decided that mounting the filter on the outside wouldn't be the worst thing to happen.
