i highly sugest you rething the digital ballist. my 1k is very loud and hot, it melts the carpet piles. they make digis that dont interfear ive been runnign galaxies for 1 year w/o problems in 2 dif places.
didnt u say ur running 220/240V? the problem lies w/ 110/120V and a short cord. they fixed that now just make sure u get a blue/purple lumitek 1k they dont cause interfearance ive tested it w/friends it also saves power and fires the bulb brighter. my meter showed about 5-15% more light(lumins as its a simple hand held) it also runs cooler so it generates less heat.
yea SOMe old silver lumi's did cause problems but it has long been resolved.

hydrohuts are nice quality thick canvas and steal poles PVC sags and pandapoly is a headache. DIY is always cheaper, but smooth and easy has a price benefit also.

hey now make hydrogon huts (3 circles of pvc around lights) if SOG is your thing.

my sunsytems was always the quietest running magnetic i ever owned my Hydrofarm 600 was even louder and hotter then my 1k SS

im intrested ....1 bd apt.. are you growing in ur room?

i had them in and they didnt see it because i had blinds/curtins blocking door.
i was though shitting my pants the whole time.

hey everybody. All the help, advice and criticism have been appreciated. Hopefully this will serve as a guide for someone else wanting to do an apartment grow. Howver, what this thread has made me realize is that putting on a 4k show, and even a 2k show, in a 1 bedroom apartment isn't really that intelligent.
I feel like i'd be better off saving the money until i can at least rent a house with an out of state property manager and then put something on.
Instead, I'm going to focus on finally completing my stealth dresse.r that I've been slooooooowly working on over the last month.
That should hopefully be completely by september 1st. Seedlings/ clones will be started ahead of time most likely so I can get it going right away.

I hope no one feels that this has been a wasted effort in advising me. I'm sure some other members will see this and it might give them some ideas of the available possibilities.

thanks again!

algo es algo ....technically you are correct. At least in south America its used like we use....Anything is better than nothing. Something is something. I guess it sort of makes sense. I'm not a spanish scholar, just try to use what my friends there use. Learn a few choice phrases and suddenly it seems you're speaking spanish.

I normally grow in a 1 bdrm with my 400 watt... normally I start a grow right after the next, but I decided to go risky for the next 7 or so months and have a cycle going, after the initial two I plan to harvest 3 a month... and I thought I had balls...

Is this stupidity or bravery? Well like said before depends on the place. While clowntown is right about most nice places, I pay well into 800$ a month for a 1 bedroom, and lets clarify that I am NOT in a major city.... very nice for my area, in fact probably the best. I have lived here for 1.5 years and never once found any indication of anyone entering my apt., no calls, no worries, nothing.

But 4k? The power usage alone is suspicious... I personaly would never attempt this sorry to say...greed is what gets you man... they say no smell, no sell, no tell but notice they all stem from greed. Greed for more plants, greed for more money, and greed for attention/props/power. I mean, one of my most important tips I tell people to do in apt. is to make your grow "mobile", make sure you can take it down in <15 mins.

But for 4k I just don't see how that is even possible which means should someone want to come in ever, your basically screwed right there. They barley scratch the surface to find you and they can...be careful man...:joint:

EDIT: just read about how your balls sunk LOL, don't think of it that way, think of it as now you can have your freedom.

My advice? Buy a 100+ watt flo with a 40 gallon tub (15$). Cut an exhast in it and also a light for the hole... veg in there, and flower under your hps... get a cycle going and you can be pulling 3-5 ounces per month... with only having around 10 plants...once you get it going.

i'm probably going to aircool a 250w hps in my 3 sq foot 39inch tall dresser and use the hps either as supplemental to that or for veg. I've decided against an ngb style cab for the dresser because 1. simplicity and 2. grow more at once under more light

irishSoCo, you got the right idea, scrap the apt and go with a rented house, you have to be able to rent a decent 700-800 dollar/mo house in a decent working class neighborhood. You want a working class neighborhood because those people for the most part are more concerned with paying the bills and enjoying their free time when they are off. Renting a house is alot easier than it seems, get in the local paper, and find some sort of home renting agency that you can buy a list of available homes for rent and cruise around and scope the houses. Pick a suitable house, and arrange a tour. Go in scope the house and decide from there. This would be a perfect time to do landlord screening. You call to check out a house and the landlord is busy, has to schedule some other time or arrange for someone else to come let you in the house, ****ing excellent. Means the landlord wont be coming by to inspect shit, just drop that money order in the mail on time and you are golden. (When scoping places, check out the electric service.)

Once you are in the house and keys are in your hand, change locks, build room and start show IMMEADETLY. Get that consumption up to where its going to be and get the ball rolling. If you dont have all your equipment Order fans and/or digital 600w lights from MDhydro, 8'' vortex - 179.00 or so. 600w digital ballast and cord - 213.45 shipped to your drophouse door (600w MDhydro ballast and 600w eiko hps bulb.) If you want to go with the 1k's dont go digital, get magnetic ballasts for under 100 bux @ your local elec. supply store. You can also get generic bulbs from elec. supply also or spring for hort bulbs online somewhere. Buy all your ducting materials from HVAC supply company, most will sell to the public, get on yellowpages.com and find yourself one.

As far as room construction, You can spend 60 bux on pond liner, or you can go to home depot and buy a large heavy duty tarp (the silver and brown one) and line your floors with that. You can also use it as panda plastic, and paint the silver side white, voila you have panda plastic on the cheap. Also, while at the depot (in the tarp section) buy the tarp zipper for $7.49.

Other quick tips, for most/all contstruction needs where you need something to be air tight, and its an akward space, buy a few cans of "great stuff" expanding foam sealant. Its the ****ing bees knees when it comes to sealing a/c's into walls, sealing ducting into walls, making rooms air tight, and affixing a large rubbermaid box onto the back of your a/c. Also pick up a few rolls of gorilla tape, I use it to tape down my tarps to floors/walls and to secure ducting. Another quick tip is to use those "Hercules Hooks" (google it if you arent familiar.) I use those to hang vortex fans, run the lamp cords to my light, and they are real easy and quick to install, no drill needed.

Hope that is of some assistance, sure as hell would have helped me when i was starting to build my room.

cesartime: thanks for that info. I guess i didn't think of looking for ballasts at an electric supply store.
id probably need to wire them and stuff right?

Yea, you get a multitap ballast so you can wire it for 120v or 240v, its real simple. There used to be a tutorial on OG, where i first learned how to do it, i dont know if there are any more online tutorials online anymore, so if you decide to go that route maybe i or someone else around here will be able to give you some assistance.

irishsoco good read even though you did have a change of mind I have learned alot just from reading though this one. No matter what you come up with good luck in the future.

so new situation:
Im trying to help a couple close friends of mine set up their first real grow. I plan on not doing anything with it besides setting it up for them, teaching them how to use it, and help them learn how to watch the plants.
I'm currently trying to talk them out of bringin in more people. I don't think they understand that they'll have to split whatever they get that much more and the risk of someone finding out or someone getting ratted out is higher. Thats why im limiting my involvement.

anyway, here's the space and the situation:

the room is about 5'x6'x7-1/2'H. The doorway is on one of the 5' sides. This is a coat closet but it has a small window that's about 1-1/2'wX2-1/2'H. The window is loacted 2' off the floor about 1 feet from the end of the left side 6'long wall near the doorway. The apartment is the second floor of a small house with the landlord's apartment below. I am not aware of weather a hole can be punched in the ceiling to vent into the attic.

The laws in my state do not include plant count, only weight of plants. So basically, anything larger than a micro grow will get you jail time.

I kind of would like to keep the plant numbers down though just so it doesn't seem like such a huge grow to cops if my friends are ever busted.

With the 5'x6' footprint of the room, I was either thinking w-600w hps or 1-1kw hps. The 1k hps might be a better option just because of the lower cost than 2-600s.

Because the window is their, it seemed perfect initially for an a/c system for a sealed system. The problems with that are: 1. It might look weird to have a window a/c goin in the winter. 2. co2 systems can be expensive and 3. overall greater expense of a sealed versus un-sealed room.

I wanted to do bubble buckets with them at first, but since they're on the second floor, i'm thinking that wouldn't be the best idea. Do you have to keep an airstone in the res for non dwc/bubbler type systems like e&f and top feed?
If you don't need it for top feed, i was thinking that might be the best mix of quiet and high growtch rate.

I'm looking for a lot of input here:
1)sealed or unsealed
2)soil, soilless/coco, hydro? if so what kind (not gonna go bio buckets because i feel like there is too much that can go wrong if you don't do it right.
3)light choice (also was condisering 2-1ks in a vertical setup)
4) a/c size and CO2 system needs for a room this size if sealed is a good option
5) should i cooltube the lights? and if so, what size fan for it

i'm sure i'll have more questions, but id love some advice :)
thanks everybody!

4-7 coco slabs (1m by 15-20cm each, and about 10cm deep) drip fed in a table or leach/libra/dutch-trays.

Very easy and forgivable system.

Or just soil(less) and hand watered in buckets.

I'd personally just use the window for a stealthy and carbon scrubbed exhaust, and make an intake from the inside of their house. don't go co2 and sealed and stuff in the beginning.

My homebox grow tent is 4 by 4 ft 6ft tall. Lit by 600hps and I use 4 slabs with drip feeding, and also have room for about 3-5 plants in pots (and an oscillating fan). Passive intakes and scrubbed exhaust n top corner. Adjust a wing 600hps

damn if i could rent a house for 700-900 out here id be in high heaven...

with those prices its def smarter to wait for the house... a rented grow house out here will run 3,000 to 6,000 a month!

oh yeah i think i read at the beg when someone suggested a 24k btu for a 4k hps, lol thats more like if your doing 8-10k (w/o a burner for co2) ...for 4khps 12k btu will be plent and if ur running cool tubes 10k btu will be goodd

just for refrence i had 3k hps cool tube 8' vortex pulling air from outside and pushing it back out ( 70-75 degree was air going through tubes) a 6,500btu ac kept things 80-85....but i had co2 so thats temps i wanted anyway

as far as that battery back up idea with ozone incase power goes out is a good idea...i think a vaportek 4000 would be perfect for that type of device i think its only 24w

A 2K can be setup and run ANYWHERE at ANYTIME.
It's not too loud...it's not too hot...it's manageable for quick tear down...even with 'only' 32 plants you will pull your yield every 9wks (2veg/8bloom)...

Don't even bother changing your locks. It won't matter. The reason the Manager needs access is for emergencies like water flooding when a pipe bursts etc...if the tenant below you has water flooding his ceiling all of a sudden...the first place they go is upstairs to find the source. This is a legit accident and does happen, but rarely.
What do the managers do? They run around once in a while and try their 'master key' in the doors to make sure they have access, even tho they may not enter. NOW...even they try to physically open your front door and can't...too ****in bad. They will question you about it. If you are home and the door is deadbolted and you aren't expecting anyone....don't answer the knock. Later, when confronted...tell them you must have been asleep. Use the same excuse for when the manager trys that and you aren't home. He still won't get in...cuz you will have installed a remote controlled magnetic deadbolt (google it)...when asked about why they couldn't get in...tell'em you were asleep or that you just didn't wanna answer the ****in door :)
