caligreen-Maybe it tests for PH also?

alijah-I always thought that pic made her look like a bear too, and it seems lots of other people think that too, LOL! She is a retriever mix, Lab and Golden.

EasyBakeIndica & rockmy79-Thankyou!

HM#1-
This is the plant that was having wilting problems a couple weeks ago, she is doing lots better now. This was the first trip in almost a month that she didn't look at least a little wilty. I gave her a good dose of water with Miracle grow bloom booster, she is now getting 4-8 gallons of water per week, imagine what she might look likeif I had been able to give her lots from the begining!

She has also started putting on real bud! This is earlier than I expected, this may be a good sign for this strain, I'll be sure to make a at least a few seeds with this plant(one bud) just in case she is a winner for future breeding.

Always ways a pleasure to hear your thoughts BC. I too am thinking of how I can fine tune things for next season. Started out with to many lines this season. But Im looking for a couple that are true perfomers. My biggest concern is watering. Its been reasonable around here this for the most part this season...so far. But it would be nice to figure out a secure, hassle free and cladestine system to KEEP my crops watered all season. Problem is Im in flat lands...and I cant set up anything that is permanet. Always more to learn......

BC, I was half joking about involving another person in the drying of the harvest, as I know first hand what can happen when you involve other people. I had a woman that loved me using the love of my hobby to manipulate me. That does not even take into consideration the "Gold Fever Syndrome" one might experience when there is a valuable crop drying. So I know all too well why you feel like you do. However, the cure of good weed cannot be taken lightly. Most of the time when I buy herb I finish the cure myself.
These methods of drying that you are investigating do not sound like a way to promote a good taste. When I day dream about how nice your grow is, I especially think of that outdoor taste. It is hard for me to believe you do not have a place that is private enough for a week or so risk of a thourough dry, a secure woodshed or whatever. If you dry them at home for the week or so, then put them in jars or vaccum sealed plastic you could bury them eslewhere or whatever you do later. Most people including myself even have to open our jars several times to release moisture after the dry, so unless you go Bone Dry I would think the vacuum seal would be better if they are away from you. Another place that I read a lot in IC are the tropical grows, and some of these guys have real problems drying. A couple of them use tents, but they are apparently in even more isolated locations then you are in. I am an engineer, a serious thinker, and I have been stretching my mind for a week thinking about it and I am still coming up with a blank. It is so critical to get a good cure. The old woodshed is where I keep going. You need dry air and plenty of circulation to do it right. Herb is like 80% water by weight, and so if you have 10lb of wet herb, you would need enough chemical to remove 8lbs of water. That is like a gallon of water. And then you will reach a certain point in the dry, but not dry enough to put in jars that you need to open daily for weeks. I had always imagined you lived relatively alone in private setting with no fear of Police making random visits. If you do not sell I cannot imagine the police getting in your face. They have to have a reason to get a warrant, and they have to have a warrant.
All in all itis your risk, not mine. Just my 2 cents. I really enjoyed watching this grow of yours and now that a harvest is in sight you have months to brainstorm all the ideas that exist to insure a good product.

newRandude- Don't worry man, I'm VERY experienced with drying and curing, my father taught me well some time back, and I'm sure through experimentation I will find the correct ways to dry in this manner as well.

It seems you are under the impression I will be putting the bud in the "dehydrator" and leaving it for a week or two, this is absolutly not true. I will be experimenting with the dessicant so that the dry happens slow(just like in the barn loft I like to use), then the bud will be cured in my familys traditional manner, with lots of TLC. I can see no reason why the bud quality could be harmed??

I could use a tent, but I want something more positive than that to handle the 40 degree temps and high humidity I have during my harvest season(and using a propane heater is unsafe and out of the queation), hell, my plants usually have at least some mold and are often harvested in the rain, they need to start drying immediatly or I could loose significant crop.

I don't have a safe place to take them indoors, I'm not worried about getting stolen from, I'm more worried about people who talk to much, which is almost anyone else I know.

The idea of my philosophy of growing is to minimize evidence of growing at my home, on my land. My first move was to start growing the crop off my land.......... the next step is to start the plants, dry the bud, cure the bud, and store the bud all off my land, only keeping less than one OZ on hand in my home(only a $500 fine in Oregon).
The paranoia of the threat of jail time, or even probation keeps me from taking the easy road.

I am right there with you buddy. I really believe in your methodology. Keeping everything off of your property is what I would love to do also. I can’t stop thinking about this for the last couple of weeks. Like most people I have a lot to loose family, job, house, car, etc.

I think I may try the salt method with a couple of sliced apples to see how well it works. I know when I open my water softener to see if it needs more salt you can kind of taste and feel the salt in the air so I want to make sure it does not do that to the bud so a apple should be a good taste test to the method. A watermelon may be a good way to see just how much water can be drawn out.

I will try and get some results they may be a little biased because the humidity and temp is not where it is during harvest season.

Yeah, I really wrote a long story up there.. I dont know, maybe I was too high when I did it. I was thinking about what you had said earlier about the wet rainy conditions when you harvest. But then, you will be there and taking care of them.
I mentioned I am an engineer, I am an electrical, and fairly senior at that. I have a fairly strong mechanical engineering background too, as a result of the way I applied my electrical skills. I generally manage the controls of a facility or ship's mechanical systems. I am offering my technical serivices to you and anyone else out there that may need them. I am just trying to help. Watching a grow diary seems to draw one in as an involved particiant. Like reading a really good book, only this is real and dynamic.
I will shut up now, just hoping for the best. I just cannot believe the government even cares that one would grow his own stuff, smoke it at home, and act responsible. It is unheard of reading of a crime, especially a violent crime, being committed as a result of getting too high on weed. On the other hand, every day there are crimes and violent ones committed because someone had too much to drink. I love my beer too, but I am just thrown off by the governments irony on this issue.

hamstring-Yep, family and our land is what makes me nervous about having herb around in large ammounts, especially growing or drying herb. I have in recent times become a new father, and the last thing I want is to comprimise that in any way.

newRandude- I value everyones opinions, especially intellegent and valid ones like yours, don't stop!
I'm not sure if that pic in your gallery is you or not, but I think I have stood just about where you are on the Rogue on several occaisions, right by the bridge.
Which part of gods country do you hail from?

Plots are looking great, BC! Thats a lot of watering! I feel for ya! Getting a bit dry around here too....

Thinking of drying methods, you want to get as much airflow as possible IMO.... My method this year will consist of a camoflage tarp draped over a stick wedged in a fallen willow and staked to the ground.... 1-3 strings will be hung running along the tent, and 1/2 inch plastic netting, secured with sticks, will surround the area.....

Just depends on how well the dessiccant works I guess, but I think ventilation is important....

I'm trying to think of an air-tight container which could be buried or hidden in the woods and be large enough to hold several mason jars... Any ideas? :chin:

Yep BC, Me in the pics, I was there a couple weeks ago and loved it. Right down town by the bridge. I am sure you have lit a few there at one time or another. I told my partner that I knew of someone growing the good stuff in them hills.
I hail from a town near Seattle. Been here all my life, but I do travel a lot for work. I am about to leave again really soon too. I left Boeing after a one year contract in June. I truly hate working for them, they are too limiting.

Hey Pipeline! Hows it going?

In conventional air drying moisture is stripped from the bud by the surrounding air, air movement moves the moisture from the bud. How fast it is removed by the air depends on the humidity(how much moisture the air is carrying already). The lower the humidity, the faster the dry.
7710Air_drying_vs_Dessicant_drying.JPG

In dessicant drying (it should actually be called "dessicant enhanced air drying), dessicant is used to strip the moisture from the air, in turn, the lower humidity caused by this action helps the air to remove moisture from the bud.
Basicly, rather than using air flow to dry the air surrounding the buds, the moisture is being sucked from the air by the dessicant, the dessicant becomes your artificial airflow.

Airflow is only needed to move moisture from the air, and the dessicant will do this, if the airflow problem is solved, I just can't see another reason why it is necessary. To tell the truth, I think drying with dessicant(once it is fined tuned) could possibly be gentler, and result in a better product than conventional air drying, just my 2c.
I do believe that a small(very quiet) fan could enhance the even drying in a sealed container while using the dessicant.

I always use military ammo cans for my jars, a .50cal will hold several pint jars, or one quart, a 20mm can could hold many quart jars. A can in good condition will be very air/water tight, and they are usually colored dark green, perfect for hiding.

mewrandude-Boeing doesn't piss test you?

BC, Ironically, The Lazy B does not drug screen consultants. That is what I am to them. I would certainly never work directly for that big corporation.
You know the fan you are talking about to stimulate the internal circulation could be done with old plastic fan pieces inside and a wind sail of some sort attached to the fan shaft. I am looking into your idea a little more and having better thoughts about it. I am certain from the way you are that quality is number one. With that in mind, I hope you will smoke me out around Christmas time so I can prove what I already know! Maybe I can do something for you in return. I would love to see that area in the winter too. It is truly beautiful. (I Have actually blazed thru on my trips to California in the winter, but never had time to stop). Those shots are of the new girlfriend. She used to be a stripper. She is such a show off.

Hey BACKCOUNTRY...the girls are looking good... :yummy:
Nice save on the droopy one...
I have heard the bud tastes twice as sweet if you save the plants life..:headbange

Remember the daft idea about trying to force flower Part of a plant.. :chin:
It appears to be working..

I have lovely fat bud runs going..I can see the difference on her already..and she has been hoodied..for just over a week.
Cheers M8..IOU 1...

Hey Mossy, that is so neat that worked for you. I am going to log that into the stuff I learned department. I knew that was one way of sexing a plant, but to help in a staggered grow of a single plant is news. Seems like a lot of trouble, but I am sure you have a reason for it.

I'd skip Mexico, and do a tour of Washington, Oregon, and Northern California first, there is plenty to see just in that region. If you don't like materialistic people, just avoid the San Fransisco Bay area, Seattle, and Portland, most of the rest is full of chill small town and country folk.

I'd especially advise a trip down highway 97 in Oregon and Nor. Cal., and a trip down highway 1 and 101 all along the west coast, make sure you take time to see Crater lake in Oregon on 97, and the Redwoods in California on 101, and take in the whole coast, just beautiful!!

mossy-Good deal!!

I agree with BC. I have been around many years and still not seen enough of those three states. I go to Mexico all the time, and the word there is always be on gaurd and always be paranoid, especially when talking about drugs. The trip thru the Redwoods is a Must See for everyone, it makes you realise a lot of important things. I have made treks along the entire Oregon Coast many times, and never can get enough of it. They have some of the best red wines in the world in the Willamette Valley, Salem Oregon. And the drive thru there is truly inspirational.

Oh yes, Oregon reds!!
Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz.

The Willamette, Umpqua, and Rogue valleys are turning out some really nice red wines, but I've found that a poor boy like me can't afford to buy much of his local wines, guess I'll just have to grow/make my own as usual.

HM#1 and HM#2 update

HM#1 and HM#2 update

I got out to check on my first 2 girls to be planted this year, HM#1 and HM#2.

HM#1, C99 x OR95-
77108-8-07_HM_1_C99_x_OR95_bud_macrojpg.jpg

This plant continues to do very well since her several week long wilting problem finally broke a while back. As you can see, she is starting to pack on significant ammounts of bud, much more than I am used to seeing on either the C99 or OR95 this early in the season, I'm not sure if this early start in blooming is a result of this plants genetics or a result of its enviroment(she gets the most sun of all this years plantings), she has seemed to stay a step ahead of all my other plantings for some reason.
Its hard to take a picture of it, but the bud sites are just stacked on top of each other, all over the plant, these will be the chunkiest buds I've ever grown, I can only imagine what they will look like!

I'm going to be sure to pollenize at least one minor branch of this plant, she may become the mother of the next generation(F2) of C99 x OR95.

On a side note, this plant is now taking 4 gallons of water every 5 days or so, thats alot of water!

HM#2-
77108-8-07_HM_2.jpg

This plant doesn't get much attention in this thread, do to unexpected activity in the area earlier in the season, I was forced to remove her cage and tie her down into the brush behind her to make sure she stayed hidden.
Luckily the Deer have left her alone, although it looks like rats have taken a few of the smaller lower branches, not a huge problem yet, I left droppings and hair from my dogs to see if it can deter the rats from hanging out there.

She looks like she will yield just fine!

It seems you can't use colorful metaphors on ICmag anymore, I'm sure all the junior high kids that hang out around here were getting all perverted by all the swearing :muahaha:
