150w HPS Club and Resource Guide......

Hey suga,
I know it isnt overwatering, cuz I do wait for the cups to completely dry up before watering with 10-20% runoff
And the seaweed spray is diluted pretty good
Temps lights on are 75-82
Temps lights off are around 70-76
So i guess that leaves the medium im using (like you said its too heavy)
So Im going to lowes this weekend and buying some Black Velvet Mushroom Compost, a butt load of perlite, and some MG Organic choice potting soil (I know MG is crap, but im probably only going to use a little in my mix, for the poultry litter and a little time-release ferts),
Ive got my own backyard compost with alot of goodies in it (Egg shells, composted cow manure, mushroom compost, lettuce, fruits, coffee grounds, organic green tea, oats, blood meal, bone meal, leaves, grass clipping, a bunch of different types of vegetables, and some other stuff)

Going to mix it up at about:

40% MG Organic Choice Potting Soil
30% Perlite
15% Mushroom Compost
15% My compost

So do you think my plants will thrive and get better in this mix?

Im transplanting this weekend so any thoughts on my mix would be nice before then.

Thanx!

you have alot of plants 20+, so it might be hard to get them all under those floros? if you can get them all under it, 2 or 3 inches away then go for it! you can keep the hps in there if you want and you can add CFL's as well.

veging plants grow better, stretch less and have tighter nodes under floros, next time u start seeds, give them floro lights before they sprout and see the difference for yourself :)

Yeah i got a shankload of plants (22 to be exact), but I have fit them all under it before, but its a bitch and a half......

So i guess there off to be under the flouros for about 1/2-1 week.

Red_Greenery .....for the hurricane glass ... you could try "Micheals" or "White Rose" ....or something like that...look under crafts in the Yellow Pages and see what's near you. There's also the option of high end Kitchen supply stores. Like "Pier 1 Imports" or places like that...you would look for what's called a "Bake-a-Round" Basically it's a pyrex glass tube.

Good plan to use SugaBears link to build it. ...that's what I did...and the only thing I changed was, instead of trying to build the lamp socket on a suspension of Metal cable wrap...I just screwed the socket mount right to a 4" right angle duct and then that fit right inside the glass. No stress about over tightening the duct onto the glass and breaking it. ...you can see that in the pic above.

Good luck. This is definatly the thread to be asking these questions....I learned more from the 150 Watters then ever before....I have huge respect for all these peeps in here.

and as a side note...people make fun of us canadians and our silly sayings....eh? ...that's the first time I've heard the term "Bodging"...I look it up..and it's a good thing...but the first time I've been called a Hack and it be a good thing...too funny.

So today so far what I've learned is......

To bodge is to improvise in the repairing or construction of material objects, often employing workmanship or materials of a less than satisfactory standard.

A British slang term, the Oxford English Dictionary links it to botch, in the sense of repairing something badly. Its most common use is probably for home repairs or otherwise indifferently performed "do it yourself" projects.

Originally a Bodger was a polelathe worker, who made wooden goods from green wood, such as chair legs or candlesticks. These handmade chair legs were not of a lesser standard, and would be sold on to furniture factories for assembly. This craft industry still exists, although not to service the mass production furniture industry.

It can be generally used as a synonym for hack or kludge.

Too funny
Peace eh!

Q_bal_1 - how many days in 12/12 now? looks good - it'd be really nice though if you loaded your pictures here - I don't like going off site to see the expanded version.

Red_greenery
- good work man - I hope it works well for you - if heat becomes an issue consider taking the ballast out of the grow space. I can't imagine it being much hotter than the 200+ watts of CFLs you''ve had in there. so what you going to stock them tubs with this time? you still growing the shiskas?

Q ba ! ... i am nearing harvest, too . will probably do it tomorrow.

Red ... nice work . love your grow machine; hardly stealthy but mighty impressive-looking !

this is a pic of my Sugarwarp plant, exactly 7 weeks into 12/12. that may sound a bit early, but the trichomes are saying it's harvest time, especially since i am looking for the head-buzz, rather than the couch-lock.

small problem which i am looking for input on ... i was hoping to re-veg this plant, with an eye to pollinating it in the future with an, as yet, unsprouted male. don't know if you can tell from this crappy pic, but the fan leaves are pretty much all yellow/yellowing . will i be able to re-veg ?

happy saturday, 150ers !

Hey Suga - I'm still growin' the Shiska's. I have two babies just going into flowering now.

I'm still tinkering with the tub design and want to get a fully working design with the 150HPS installed. This is a prototype for a cabinet that I will be building soon.

I agree that the 250 W of CFL produces more heat than the 150 HPS, I think more like about 350 with the ballasts. The CFL's produce only convection heat not radiant heat so it's all confined to the lightchamber which has 38 CFM. I might have a problem with the growchamber which only has 15 CFM of airflow.

Hey Greengrow - everyone says it's not stealthy but it's silent, doesn't glow or smell and hides in a closet really well.

I have a dumb question - can you take a 150W ballast and run two 70W lamps or does a single ballast have to work for one light?

Just wanted to check in. I had a bit of a heat problem. I removed the ballast to the outside of my box.

And then put a cover over it.

It was still running a bit too warm for my likes so (I should have done this in the first place) I put it in the air exhaust to help cool it down.

I've also put a cover. Though much more loosely.

Last but not least. Here's a pic of my babies.

Good growing to all.

I got my 150 HPS going in my Rubbermaid tubs.

The temps are excellent at 77F and run only slightly higher than 74F with 254 watts of CFL's.

I'm running a single 38 CFM computer fan in the top lighting section. The growbox section is cooled and scrubbed with an inline scrubber with it's own computer fan. I've measured the growbox airflow at 15 CFM.

I cut a hole big enough to drop the light into the light chamber. A sheet of acrylic or glass is installed 9" from the top. The 38 CFM computer fan and a passive 25 sqin vent complete the "cooltube".

The security lamp fixture acts as a remote ballast and heat sink all together.

green grow, While they do take a good deal of time to look normal, I've re-vegged some plants that were pretty close to death with very little green left on them. So yes, it can be done. When I've found myself in that situation in the past, I just keep them vegging just long enough to get a couple of good clones, then dump the plant and start a new mom from one of the clones. When done that way, its amazing at how well the clones take off.

Heero007, Heat and ventilation are always the biggest challange for small contained grows. As I recall from some of your earlier pictures, the walls of your box are two layers thick. Finish wood and inside MDF. They may be acting an insulator, not allowing your heat to dissapate thru. I had this issue early on when I tried insulated foam board as my reflective material. Don't loose heart though. As long as you increase the volume or speed of your air exchange, the temps must drop.

Red, Dude, I'm digging your last pic'. It reminds me of the robot from "Lost In Space". Oops, I'm dating myself again.

Who says my R2 unit isn't stealthy?

I think it looks more like the Hewey, Dewey and Louie drones from Silent Running.

thanks for the reply, pipedream ... not wanting to leave any bud behind, i chopped the plant quite mercilessly . all that is left is 2 of the tiniest little leaves imagineable . i seriously doubt it will regenerate, but just in case it does, here is a pic for future comparison .

red : i take it back; your grow box is so outrageous that a casual observer would never guess that a ganja plant was growing in there . perhaps it5 could be explained away as a home-made air filtration unit . stealthy ? you bet !

Oh yeah and Chonic50,

Peat is really acidic, and you need atlest 33% perlite.
