a comfortable distance for your hand is a comfortable distance for the plant(s).
looking very healthy there, invision . keep it up !

I would use the top part of your hand because it is more sensitive. Don't use your palm. If you want to be extra careful, use the more sensitive wrist area or higher up your arm on the bottom side of your forearm section.

with my 150's anything closer than 6" from the tops will cause wilting, even with a glass piece i still cant get much closer than 6" from the tops, i say about 10" from the plant at all times is a good starting point.

the hand things works great as said above id start there first and move the lamp closer daily until she wilts a bit then rasie it up a tad.

thanks for looking at my plants but one went hermie already so i had to toss her :(

i have another female in the clone cab is i need her.

i would have gone digital except for the fact that the cfl package said NOT to use them with digital timers....

really - I didn't know that - not sure if I have used it with the cfl's but I don't think so. :chin: guess the tubes must be ok as I have used the digital to turn on and off the 150 and 38watts of electronic t-8 tubes - had them running from a separate power strip plugged into the timer.

So, what would you guys recommend as a safe distance to start at?

a comfortable distance for [the top of] your hand is a comfortable distance for the plant(s).

excellent advice -- - if you have good air movement you can get the 150 pretty darned close. also hydro will help to avoid wilting as compared to soil - but transpiration will be huge - 1 gallon per plant every 2-3 days depending upon rh.. soil might require daily water or drip system...

anyways see this picture

see the bulb up there - the plants were allowed to grow into a stadium around the bulb with taller branches in the back. Here are the same plants taken out of the cabinet and rotated so you see the sides facing the bulb - you can see a few light bleached tips on the left plant

those buds were like 3" from the bulb - no burn - just bleached them out - when tied back the color returned...

p.s. the right plant was the o90 mom of the ob1

I was wondering if I could get a little advice after my first grow attempt. Here is the setup I was using:
14550potshots_002-med.jpg

I have since added in 2 cfl's, which will soon be 4 once I get back to the hardware store, and painted the cab white. It is a 150w hps and you can't see it but there is an active intake on the lower left side. Temps were in the low 80's most of the time. I was growing some bag seed. Height/size was very much an issue so I had LST'ed and pruned quite a bit. I made the mistake of using the miracle grow soil; it worked alright at first but during flowering it made feeding a bit tricky and I over-ferted them.

My problem was that the buds never really got hard and fat. They looked to be a decent size when I harvested and dryed them. Once dry though I would snag a bud that would look to be 3-4 grams and it would barely be a gram. The quality was alright, very sativa like buzz, but still not quite what I had hoped. That could be from the bag seed or it could be that I harvested to early. I will be getting the proper jewlers loupe thing to check the trichromes this time to make sure that I don't harvest early this time. By all appearances though I waited long enough last time.

So what other problems could I be facing, particularly regarding my overly fluffy buds?
Is my space overcrowded?
Not enough light to produce big buds(the 4 cfl's should take care of that)?
Poor nutrients/soil mix, what are some recommendations for nutes that increase yield?
Getting some better genetics, thinking of going with nirvana but am leary of having them delivered to my place.
Would switching to a soil bed instead of pots be a good idea, how shallow could the soil bed be to allow me more height? Would this allow more room for root growth and does that impact yield?
Would it be possible to do a low profile hydro setup? Those hydro-pot things look like they could work pretty well as they don't seem any bigger than the pots I am using. This would also allow me more control over nutrients as with soil I am stuck using potting soil from the flower store and can't find any that comes without nutes already in it.
When I prune should I take off alot of the leaves, particularly if I need to do it during flowering. I see some pics where it looks like people trim everything down to basically buds with only a few leaves, this would help with my crowding.

Thanks to anyone that takes the time to help out a new grower.

edit: the cfl's are to help with some light coverage in the darker corners of the box over on the left side.
edit 2: I was looking around and saw this thread: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=47439 that has pretty much the same problem and their final product bore an eery resemblance to mine.

xavier7995 I'm still a rookie 150 watter so I'll leave the advice to the experts in here...this is the place though to ask fo sho.

Here's my setup .. Two 40w CFLs added makes it better I think ...at least so far for me in veg. I use a recycling bin for a pot and it works good.

I can't wait to move out of the city and be able to set up something larger. The small size required for living in an apartment sucks ass. It seems the larger setups are much easier than having to micro-manage everything to make it fit. Yields as well:)

ok - let's see - genetics IMO have a great deal to do with the results you got - IMHO opinion people waste time growing bagseed - I guess I was lucky in that I didn't have any bag seed when I did my first grow and therefore had to buy genetics...

as for ordering to your abode - I wouldn't sweat it too much - lots of packages get delivered lots of places - especially if you're an apartment dweller you probably already get mail for people who used to live there, what's another piece of mail? the seed companies are very descreet and good at what they do.. - seedboutique turnaround to USA is bout 2 weeks round trip from when you send - get a money order at walmart and send air mail - I think 3 stamps will cover an envelope no problem - it will be there in a few days if you register with them you'll know when it gets there - they send the next day and it takes a bit over a week to get back to you

as for breeders - nirvina is cheap and has some good genetics, I here good things about whiterhino, ak48, bluemystic, as well as papya, but have never tried nirvina myself - I personally would spend my $$ on some femaleseeds 4 packs as the advantage to having all females in a micro grow is huge - if it was my first grow again I would go for their NL and maybe NLxgrapefruit - especially if you want fat thick dense buds - c99 and grapefruit are also very nice but tend to produce more fluffy sativa buds. I personally started with nl x c99 and burmese pure - the nl x c99 was very easy to grow and super low odor - ideal for indoors - NL x grapefruit is basically the same thing.

I can't tell how many plants you have in there but it looks like at least 4. I found 2 was optimum in my 29"wide x 15" deep x 29" high 150 watt cabinet. Add some scrog and I was getting fat dense buds. I personally think 2 to a max of 4 plants under the 150 is good.

You gotta keep it fairly well trimmed up in there - 6-8 branches per square foot is optimum for getting dense buds.

As for soil ..... I don't really do soil but when I do I search out a product called promix which is peat, perlite, vermiculite, and some lime I believe - it is what is called a soil less mix as perlite is not soil. You can make it your self and a quick search in the soil section will find a few recipes but I think 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 is normal. Even if you use potting soil mix you'll want to add perlite to lighten the soil providing better air to roots = more growth. Using a mix like this or even adding perlite to your potting soil will help to temper the fert problems.

One product I really like and would recommend to people is the General Hydro Bloom formula - it's nice as it only contains P-K, no N - would make a perfect feed for plants grown in a soil that contains plenty of N already.

hydro could be done in there - a single tub could be used with air stones for DWC or you could go with buckets and DWC. DWC is a simple hydro system where the plant's roots just sit in an airated nurtient solution - growth is very fast and lush - but things can get out of control quickly. Minimum per plant resevior capacity for DWC would be around 1 gallon or 4 quarts but I think 2 gallons is optimum unless you're growing trees. Before going hydro though you will need a TDS meter and a PH kit.

You should probably have a PH kit for soil to balance the ph of the feed water as well.

The extra CFLs will help to light those darker corners but again training to get a 2-3 square foot area of 12-16 bud sites directly under the lamp will give you the densest buds, period.

oh and a couple more thoughts... your temps - 80 degrees will also contribute to airy buds - you say you have an 80 cfm active intake - what about the exhaust? keeping temps cooler will help to get denser buds - I find my densest buds are in winter when highs of the low 70s and lows in the upper 50s produce dense fat tight buds.

also check out SWC - it is basically the same thing as DWC but shallow instead of deep - this is what you want for a low profile hydro setup.

Thanks for the reply, I will keep your advice in mind. The NE winter temps should help keep things nice and cool.

I like that! I think I'll do that next time with a few clones. How many plants do can you fit in a bin that size, and what size is it?

Thanks.

P.S. Just got my 150w hps, and couldn't be happier to finally be a part of the club.

xxthexonesxx Thanks Mang! It's a standard size Recycling bin (about 10 gallons) I have 6 clones in there right now but I recall reading that most of these guys do 4 plants under a 150w ....am I right SugaBear?
I'm still way too much of a rookie with the 150w to give any advice...ha ... I only have one so I can try different things under it and of course the main reason was so I can be part of the 150 club. Ha

Here's a look at my 430w Canopy ... so you can see what they look like half way through it's flower cycle in a bin. Thes bins I drilled holes in the inner bin and put a thin layer of gravel and then slid it into another bin that has no holes in the bottom and a thick layer of gravel. My theory is to have drainage without the mess. Works good so far.

Peace folks

Nice work in progresses everyone.
The above advice given by Sugabear is really good. One bit of advice for Xavier is my experience with a particular fert and potting media.
1/3 each: Perlite/wormcasting/Black Gold organic soil. All found at Wal-mart.
For a fertilizer I use Pure Blend Pro, a stand alone all organic liquid fert.

Invision your plants are beautiful as always.

Sugabear the second picture you posted captures two plants. The one on the right looks all dank and dark-frosty. Such a striking contrast that seems to scream "IM FUCKING POTENT SHIT MAN". Maybe im just stoned, but that plant makes me really happy. What strain is that particular plant?

To answer your last question, the Obees are happy to be in the Black Cabinet, former home of Nuclear Cloud. And to go a little more into detail...

On day 9 flower, Jan 28th, all plants showed first sings of sex overnight. One of the males grew huge ball sacks clustered together. The other male was a little more of a wimp. It was a nice night for an execution.

And the women... oh the women, my three girls. Two on the sides are stativa phenos, with the longest branches streching roughly 10 inches. The middle plant is definately an Indica pheno. She has very little branching, infact her longest branch is about 3 inches.

Well its time to start LST training. Heres a close up of the Indica Pheno, right after showing sex.

The next day I took clones from all three OBees and my mother plant. I was able to obtain six cuttings from each plant. In a few days, they should be rooting!

Now the White Cabinet. I am just amazed at the difference between the same plant grown under the White Cab, and the Black Cab! Having two, totally differnt cabinets has taught me much.

CW20 strain, Sister pheno of Nuclear Cloud. Day 43 flower. About 35 days left.

My flower chamber is only 17-1/2 inches high! I grow bonsai ganja plants and fat colas, nothing inbetween!

Nice Belenath!!! Looks strange to see the black cab without a nucleur cloud in it. I hope life is treating you well my friend. Good luck on this run. You know I'll be lurking and learning from ya. Peace bro...nice to read your post this morning.

Peace to everyone in the 400W club ....y'all rock!!!!

that's the oregon90 - and it was dank and frosty as hell - just really hard to clone and that's how I lost her. The indica dominant side of the OB1 is from her. I still don't know exactly what the oregon90 is except that it's an indica from oregon. My belief is that it is an afghani - most likely from around kandahar - that has been inbred in oregon for 20+ years.

Here's a few pics of the oregon90 mom in flower

two buckets worth of just oregon90

and here's a shot of the indie pheno of the ob1 in flower.

as you can see (I think) the bud structure is the same. The smell and taste are improved though...

so the obees are looking nice in the black cabinet - definetly seeing the two phenos there. Any smell yet?

Aloha Bonsaigrower! Thanks bro I appreciate the support!

Invision,
Your plants are looking crazy tall with fat stems. The stems at the base of the plants look aged and thick, like a tall bonsai plant. Are you going to start LST training on those tall-thin branches? I hear ya on finding a good home here. I feel this is because the OG knowledge lives on here, but with a smaller homestyle atmosphere. Its like OG without the children!

HYPERSPACE whats up man nice to see another grower blazin the 150. Whacha growin?

SugabearII,
So your another one who found cloning an indica very difficult... Its very intimidating to hear you lost clones because of this. I have read a few accounts of growers having problems cloning Indicas.

All three pictures display much insight into the OB1.
The difference between the OB1 Indica pheno, and the Orgeon90 is amazing.
I can see what you mentioned about the bud structure being the same. You also mentioned improvements in the quality of taste and smell, and while a picture cannot capture such, the OB1 Indica pheno does looks much frostier and potent. Fucking awsome man.
Do you feel the OB1 Indica pheno has surpased its Oregon90 elder in potency?

Oh yeah I have some great news!

Those frosty plants in the white cabinet have two sister clones outdoors! They have been flowering for about 40 days in tropical rainforest climate. All I can say is, they have evolved into totally different plants! They look nothing like thier indoor sisters!
And whats even crazier is they are actually more potent, they smell different and stronger, they are frostier and tastier. The outdoor clones are only 45 days into flower, but about 200 days old genetically. For some reason, they are ready to harvest, although they only have 1-2 grams decorating thier 1' tall bodies.

Strangely, the ganja dried into what seemed like a month long cure, only after 2 days. This is just unbelieveable. The body is meaty and heavy, unlike thier indoor sisters which have fluffy light buds.

Quite possibly the most interesting Ganja situation I have came to study this year. I will post pictures of the plants tomorow when I harvest. Hopefully they will still be there!
