No, it's not the same. High Intencity Discharge (HID) incompases several different types of bulbs/balasts. The box should tell you weather it's a HPS which is better for flowering, or a Metal Haloid (MH) which is better for veg. This is not to say you can not veg with a HPS, or flower with MH, but generally you'll get better results the other way. MH also tend to run a little hotter. Also, you can not mix an HPS bulb with a MH balast or vise virsa.
econolight.com has a 150 watt HPS for about $35 including shipping. It's very easy to turn them into a remote balast grow light w/nothing more than a extention cord and some electricle tape.

Good info Vintner - just one thing to add - the majority of the older security lights are Mercury Vapor and should be avoided completely - unlike Metal Halide (MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) the Mercury Vapor lights are unsuitable for growing at all.

forgive me for not scrolling through all 174 pages of this thread but i have an extremely simple question (preferably for pipedream cause i'm gonna copy his set up.) how much yeild do you get off of one plant?

A young lady such as this one can yield over 2 ounces of trimmed dried and cured bud. However, the average tends to run just below 2 ounces. There are many variables that will affect the outcome, so don't be surprised in the beginning if things run a bit low. Also, keep in mind that there is no secondary veg chamber in my box. As such, I have quite a bit of growing height to let the plants mature and stretch into.

Because of the small size of the tubs, about 5 quarts total, the root balls are really kept in check. Sometimes, if it gets a bit tight, I'll trim the roots as well. Here's my darling wife giving me a hand a while back....

My 150w cab!

My 150w cab!

Finally! Ive got the pics uploaded, unfortunatly some of them are rotated wrong! oh well tilt your heads folks!

NOt sure waht order they are going to pop up but i have one picture of the front of my cab, the way it'll be facing in the room. The right side of the cab will somewaht be in a corner so the left front has a bunch of clothes/hats whatnot stacked on it to look like a pile of crap in the corner of my room! These pictures were taken just after completion of the project, its now upstairs in my room.

One picture of the back of the cab and the stealthiness of my ventalation. I decided to cut a hole in the back of the rubbermaid so the air would flow out of it and over the ballasts to help cool them. You can see my temp/humidity gauge and my speedster fan controller as well. These remote ballasts were parts used from the original 150w lights that they came with. All i had to buy for extra parts was 2 8 foot extension cords for each re-wire and some of those screw on caps to make the wire connections.

The next picture is of the door hinge/locks that hold the doors light/air tight with the help of some foam weatherstripping.

The last one is the two lights, intake, exhaust poking through, and you can see where my temperature probe is for my temp/humidity gauge.

Thanks to all who have helped me the idea of this design, especially sugabearII for really opening my eyes to this. I'll go get some pics with some plants in there later tonight, no guarantee on when those pics are coming up though!

Here is one more teaser from my first bagseed grow in a Red Greenery style rubbermaid tub. This pheno is a keeper and is in an attempted reveg as we speak!

Hey everybody. I just wanted to say a quick goodbye due to circumstances not in my control-I will still lurk. Hopefully by this time next year I will be able to continue this cost saving hobby. I only finished my second harvest ever. It wasnt that great. I had two mmm#2 plants in the same pot. They both had a few deficiencies. They both lost all their major fan leaves about 3 weeks into flowering. But they continued to grow and mature. The first plant only yeilded a quarter of good smoke. Pretty tasty.

I forgot to tare the scale!

The one on the right was plant #1.

The second is hanging right now. It will be larger than the first about 3/4 dried hopefully.

MOD = Mist Of Destruction - he's a breeder who started a seed company and the Menage' Trois was a mistake in his breeding room where he was crossing his flagship strain, Destroyer, with Godbud - but somehow an Arjan's haze male tossed some pollen in the pot... being an honest breeder he stated what happened and for the most part these were given away as freebies to seedbay and seedbo customers...

I would venture a guess that the ones in abird's garden are the Destroyer x Godbud and not the Destroyer x Arjan's Haze - by the shape and progress of their flower.

:chin: come to think of it I have a pack of these freebies myself... looks damn frosty for sure - might have to give them a shot

This is seriously the greatest thread I have found in 2 months of research. I have completely revised my hole plan from using a 400hps for a small cab. Thanks so much.

Well the plants i transplanted into 1gallon containers on the 22nd and then put them straight to 12/12 didnt stretch too much... THey grew just about as fast as the ones still in veg. I put the 4 plants that have been flowering one one side, and i just put two more into the flower box today from the veg cab.

The ones in the front were put in at an average height of 5", they are now only 8". I had them raised up next to the lights, i just put them on the floor today. Should i raise them up next to the light during flowering?

THe two that i just put in today i left on the floor to see if that would make them stretch up to the light more. If they get too tall, i'll give em a dose of bushmasters. I put them in at 8". THey grew in the veg cab just as fast as the ones in the flower cab.
I put the first ones in at 5" because someone who was growing this same cut in coco said that they blew up to 32" when switched from 8", i wanted to make sure i would have a problem height wise so i put them in the flower cab when they were short...

Maybe they got transplant shock and couldnt grow the first few days, thats why they didnt stretch much? From that close up, does it look like the plants will grow much more or just start budding from there...?

I have 2 more plants to put into the cab. I'll probably veg em out to about 15" and hit them with bushmasters then put them into the flower cab.

Hey guys

another (soon to be) 150HPS grower here. Let me first thank you all for this great thread. I ve been lurking it for a long time, and now I can finally post a pic or two in here.

I'm still in building process, but some work has been done, and I'm almost ready too put in the first few seeds. The flower part is1.7x1.7x2.9ft and will contain 150hps hanged vertically, and the veg/mom/clone part has same footprint but is just a little lower. I ll try to keep the temps down with just pc fans, also the 150 will be in a homemade cooltube with its own in/outtake. Cant wait to see some green plants in there.

Here are some pic of my little project. First pic is flower room, and 2nd is mom/veg/clone part
