Congrats "Dad"

Raise them with love and a gentle hand.

Welcome to the club.

Now that you're officially a farmer, you can apply for government tax relief and crop subsidies.

OK, somewhat of a NOOB electrical question here. THe room i plan to put my growbox in only has one power outlet in it (2 plugs). THere is nothing in the room, its really just a large closet. Should i be able to run 2 150w hps security lights along with a 4" vortex fan off of this outlet with no worries? I want to make sure im not going to start an electrical fire or anything here. Im probably going to run a powerstrip from each plug to let me run more than 2 plugs.

Also, if this is more than enough, could i run my two 150w hps lights from one powerstrip and run my exhaust fan off another with my "red greenery" style tub for veg off of the same one? Im trying to get all of this grow done in one small closet/room and Im hoping that the 1 power outlet will allow me to do so. I dont want my grow scattered all over the house!

THanks!

Running two 150's from a single outlet really isn't an issue. What the issue is, is what other outlets and house lights are currently working off the same circuit? And, what's working on those outlets? If by some strange chance, the closet light and outlet are the only thing on the circuit, you're golden. However, my guess is that there are other items being fed from the same breaker. In order to be safe, you'll have to do a bit more investigation to identify everything currently working on the same breaker. Its easy to do, and just takes a few minutes. Be safe before anything else.

cool thanks for the help. I plugged both of em in yesterday and didnt notice anything odd (hot wires or outlet) THey both worked fine. There isnt an outlet on the opposite side of the wall either, so hopefully its on its own circuit.

So i've pretty much finished the construction of the box. THere are a couple light leaks to fix that the weather stripping didnt completely eliminate and i have to light proof my intake. Then after that i have to run the power strip to the back of the box and get everything plugged in and installed with timers and what not. I did a 2 hour "first burn" of the box yesterday. With my temperature probe 4" from the light my temps were right at 75-76*F. When i put the temp probe within 2" of the bulb the temp went up about 10* 84-86* but thats like RIGHT next to the bulb. I wouldnt let any plants get that close anyways. All of this is with my 4" vortex fan dialed down to "low" with my speedster fan controller. If i turn it up it cools the 4" away temp to about 70* (well in the 10 minutes i watched it thats where it went down to. So those are some pretty good "empty box" temps if i do say so myself. Im not sure how much i should expect it to change with 8 plants in there in 1gal pots.

Most of my "stealth designing" is done as well, i went for the "hide in plain sight" approach. I'll get some pictures in the next couple of days to show everyone how the box came out. I decided to hard mount the lights to the roof of the cab. Id rather move the plants up and down to get them closer to the lights than having to move the lights all the time. I honestly dont think that i will need to raise/lower em...there is a lot of light in the cab! I made the mistake of opening the cab in a semi dark room with my face right in it and i looked directly at the lights! :bashhead: Ouch! I couldnt read the temp on my gauge for like 10 minutes, all i could see was a red/green sillouette of a 150w hps bulb in my vision! haha

One thing you might consider doing is staggering the turn on time for each of the lights by a few minutes. This way the intial load will be less of a 'shock', just incase your wiring is somewhere near its capacity.

And totally 150 unrelated, forgive me, but I wanted to share my small outdoor harvest with everyone  . It's what's keeping me happy untill I can get up and going again indoors. Take care

ITS NOT 100 % BUT ITS SAFER THAN GUESSING A FIRE ALARM AND EXTIGISHER

Thanks Lonesome . I'm not sure who the cross is by - I got it for free when the seeds I had ordered from a seedbank didn't germ well. What I can say is that it smells slightly skunky with a powerful pinesol thing going on. They didn't branch at all right up until the last day, and yield (for the given conditions), was modest. BUT, my god is it strong.. it has no ceiling - smoke more.. get higher.. theres no point where this stops being true, haha. Thats my only plant unfortunately - It was somewhat of an experiment (I've never grown outside).. but a male that got 2 or 3 days to shine before I found it gave me about a dozen f2's, so she'll be back!

after a little time drying:

lemon ... nice icing sugar !

sir ... theres really no formula (that i know of) to go by for cooling purposes . you should have plenty of intake with 6 @ 1.5". your box is actually very close in size to mine, but ambient temps are a big factor, also, whether you are using a cool tube or not. i dont have to worry about a scrubber because smell is not (yet) an issue for me.
all i can say is that it's better to have too much cooling/scrubbing than not enough. fire up that light and see what temps are and go from there.

reefer ... looking forward to those pics !

Hey everyone one I somewhat have my grow up and running you all should check it out if you want its in the Mandala strains forum.I'grow's Hashberry Plunge.Nice nugz Lemon I would join you in a smoke session and bring some goodies myself!

seed production

Hey yall, name is marto and i'm honored to be a new part of the gang. Ive learned more in 4 days than in 40 years studying my new hobby. Thanks to all for the great info. But one piece of info i didnt see covered was using the 150hsp for a cabinet seed farm. I'd like to know if this is a viable method for making seed. I'm trying to stockpile for a summer od grow and i have no other way to obtain them. So if anyone in the know has any comments or warnings befor i dive in,i'd greatly appreciate it. What type of ratio m/f is best and how many? What amount could i produce for 3sq/ft. Thanks advance.....marto

hey marto  welcome aboard

As for seed making in a 150 cabinet - it can and has been done.

I suggest having a separate space like a closet for the males when they've been identified though as a full open pollination in your cabinet will leave pollen in there seeding crops for months if not years to come.

So my suggestion is to:

1. If you have a mom selected that's the best way to do it as you can start a clone of her in flower after you've identified your male and moved him out.
2. You want to hit mom with pollen around 3-4 weeks into flower to provide a full 30 days for seeds to mature in their pods!
3. Once your male has shown himself if he's big and bushy I suggest trimming back to one cluster of male flowers as that's all you'll need
4. Outside of the grow cabinet take your mom and either shake the father over for a full plant pollination - or collect pollen on a small clean paint brush, finger, or even que tip and pollinate specific branches.
5. If you're trying to raise sensi in the same cabinet wait a little while before you bring her back and if possible give her a spray down with room temp water to wash any remaining pollen off.

Another thing to check it is the "male isolation chamber" thread by JLP that provides a method for having males in the same room as females without spreading pollen - JLP is a master breeder and this is a good technique if you have the room - just do a search on the key words or find a post by him as he has it linked in his signature

Biggest issue is selection - that's why if you've already got the mom selected for traits you want you're 50% done and can concentrate on finding a male with the right traits like early sex expression or short stature.

good luck and let us know how it goes

Wow, thanks Suga, that gives me alot to think about. Had no idea that pollen can be so explosive and a little go such a long way. I will try JPG isolation method next grow cycle but not now, too many variables for a newbe. I'm gonna bring indoor a durban poison which i just clipped and try to reveg her and cross with one of the Tikals from ace that i planted. I planted 5 and hope i get at least one male/one female and not 5 of the same!!! That would sure suck. Anyhow if it starts looking intresting i'll post some photos.

No, it's not the same. High Intencity Discharge (HID) incompases several different types of bulbs/balasts. The box should tell you weather it's a HPS which is better for flowering, or a Metal Haloid (MH) which is better for veg. This is not to say you can not veg with a HPS, or flower with MH, but generally you'll get better results the other way. MH also tend to run a little hotter. Also, you can not mix an HPS bulb with a MH balast or vise virsa.
econolight.com has a 150 watt HPS for about $35 including shipping. It's very easy to turn them into a remote balast grow light w/nothing more than a extention cord and some electricle tape.
