Spider Mites or Just A Spider?

I was looking over my Purple Haze clone when I saw this..

img_1313.jpg

I swiftly rushed to the sick plant thread, and from what I can tell, the plant doesn't have any of the symptoms of spider mites.

The clone was first in my pc box which doesn't have side doors, and I saw a little spider in there, along with a web. However, as you could expect, i'm still a little shaken up and looking for reassurance.

ya that does looks like spider mites; does your leaves have little white spots on them or see little black like bugs running around underneath leaves?

When you have webbing on your plants you already have a bad infestation of them...... you should get 2 methods of removing them and one of them should be sticky traps and the other you can choose one......... click on the link in my sig and scroll down to spider mites

"I swiftly rushed to the sick plant thread"
that's your thread, Stitch :)

i read the spider mite section 10x over, and I have NONE of the signs of spider-mites -- save the web. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what i've gathered, once webs are spun it should be pretty obvious it's spider mites, right? Wouldn't there be signs already like

"but with spider mites they pierce the surface of the leaves and can show tiny holesor white speckling damage"

there's none of that. I went over the underside of the leaves and I didn't see anything moving. shit, i woke up at 7 AM unable to get back to sleep 'cuz i was too worried about my babies...checked again, still nothing moving. i've checked all the other plants for webs and such and they don't have anything of the like.

i will gather what's needed to kill the little buggers just in case I do have them, but i'm really really not seeing anything that points towards mites besides the web, but there was also a web in the computer case that she was in for a while.

me wonders, can I chalk this one up to the neighborhood spider? hmm.....one can hope.

alright, before posting this, i went and checked -- right now, that is -- for mites. I looked all over, and ran a wet paper towel over & under all the leaves, and then I checked the paper towel for any movement. none.

thank you both for your help

You have a spider. Congrats, leave him there and he will take care of pests for you.

If you had mites enough to spin a web like that, you would definitely see them and your plant would look like crap.

Might I suggest you take a trip to Radio Shack and buy a 7 dollar scope to ensure you do not have mites!?

Mites are bad man and any web imo on ANY plant should be handled accordingly.

With the scope you will be able to see the leaf surface and the little life sucking fuggers if you have them. Because if you get them they are a MAJOR BITCH to get rid of.

So be safe man not sorry, KNOW you plant is ok and not guessing on our opinions.

Beside those clear droplets you see in the web are EGGS.

if you want to get rid of wathever that is, and it esyer being a clone, you just pic so garlic heads, put them in a bucket of water and them sink them in and skeeze them, after that you pic the clone and dip it in there, it helps if the water is cold.

those clear things are not eggs, they are water droplets :). I misted the web so I could get a good picture of it. thanks though

i_score, that's a pretty funny method haha..hopefully one I won't have to use, but thanks :)

I think mites.I see little red tiny dots in some places of the web, plus ive never seen a spider cacoon a plant like a mite. They will spin a web so they can catch bugs (spider)and it will spread from one spot to another so it can catch food. That bud is incased in a web witch is mite like, imo. It would help a little more if you could show a pic of that same branching but a top view/leafs,or just a couple more pix then it would be easier.I always use no- pest strips and they work great, but not after webbing.Hope you get it figured out Bro,post more pix if you can :joint: .Peace and stay safe,PVP

It's really hard to see much of anything with the pic so overexposed, but I still feel that you would definitely see mites if the webs were mite webs and were that advanced.

Please post some better pics so we can be sure. I'd hate to be the one that steers you wrong.....

My one brush with mites looked a lot like this, I regret to say. I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Wags re: buying a scope or a loupe. Only way to know for sure.

Florigen- if you're out there, you'll like this next bit.

My tomato plant was home to an average Joe spider, this summer. That little guy strung his web between the 2 plants I had in a huge container, and caught all kinds of stuff. He didn't wrap the plant up, though- just like Peaville said.

Could be mites, could be you have a different type of spider than the one my tomato plant had. I am leaning towards mites though, sorry bro. Figure it out ASAP, and if they are, take them very seriously. Neem em over the course of 10 days or so, scrub the growshow, the whole 9 yards. If they are mites, it looks like they have dug in for a fight.

Good luck, I'll keep 'em crossed for you. Let us know.

My bet is on them being mites. Normally a spider wont make a web that hugs the form of the plant in that fashion.

Good point Verite.

I wonder, some caterpillars also spin webs. Any leaf damage or little black specks, "caterpillar droppings"?

Verdite is spot on. (again) (still) lol

Those are mites.

take action asap.

what are you still here for?

My weapon of choice are No Pest Strips.

4 in a closet that is left open to a bedroom.

look UNDER the leaves with a magnifing glass - a BIG one if your eyes are as old as mine.

There are a couple threads about garlic, tobacco and soap to kill the lil bastards also looked interesting, but I haven't seen any mite lately.

good luck.

they will develop immunity to nearly anything if given the chance - it is dearly important that you continue treatment to all hatchlings until the life cycle has been stopped dead.

I got the stuff for a organic, low impact to the plants Non Systemic control. It's called Bon Neem Insecticidal Soap. 2-3 treatments are necessary (depending on the severity of infestation) as it won't kill the eggs but it will prevent the mites from breeding again. The neem doesn't allow the mites to molt and therefore suffocates the buggers. Soma was right. Plants really like getting neemed. Spray them good on upper and lower surfaces ... and ... I lightly mist the medium as well. Allow plant(s) to dry before placing them under intense light.

the only spider that I know of that produces webbing like that (irregular, with no structure) is a black widow. I have lots of them around... you would probably see her, or him, if it were a spider.

Good luck
