Thread:Skunk is not "old school".An opinion from an old man.

"Mr Grimbo,
The real difference is not in the potency. It is in the smell. But the old Skunk, the Skunky one pre 1980 was much more physical and less mental and up.

I still have the old skunky smelling lines but to be truthfull they were never ansd are not as popular as the sweet ones.

So I don't make them and it seems that no one else saved any even though they breed true. Or maybe they only made hybrids? Or maybe did not save any of the Skunky male Skunks? Funny if they were so good that no one saved any?

you can't argue with seed customers, the customer is always right in my book.

Different seeds for different needs.

Skunk #1 was not about greed, it was developed as an open pollinated hybrid that breeds true so you do not need to buy the seeds again, that is the truth. (This was before clones).

How many seed producers today even bother to try and make a variety that breeds true?. Almost all are F1 hybrids that do not breed true. Because then you needed to rebuy the seeds frome the breeder again. How growers used the Skunk was up to them, they could be greedy or not. I you do not like Skunkified weed then grow or buy something different, what can I say? Why do you think that much weed is Skunkified, it is because Skunk is so easy to make great hybrids with.

Don't be a hater, do something about what you do not like, make a variety that you are proud of and pass it and the clones and seeds out for free to everyone, but you will see, rightaway someone will cross it with Skunk and then it will be the same old greedy Skunk hybrids, life is like that. It is not the weed that is greedy after all, it the people, don't you think?

-SamS

we are all aware that sam has pioneered a good thing, we all know that skunk#1 is a building block of alot of real good strains, i'm by no means a hater, sam had an idea of what he wanted in a strain and went for it, and he was successful....props to sam for that....i said in the beginning i had no diss to sam.....my only argument comes in when talking about "RKS".

i'm gonna go off each paragraph from up top.

alot of people like what you call the pre 80 skunk.....me and alot of costumers would love if this skunk was "re-released"

i'm glad you still have the old skunky lines man...if they are what we are looking for it seems that you have the only ones.....i know you prefer the sweet skunk over the skunky skunk but if you read this thread and many many more on all the boards alot of people have been/are looking/will be searching for the skunky skunk. you'd be surprised to see how many people are looking for the old skunky skunk.

we really wish you'd make more man...that would kick ass if they breed true like the skunk#1 does....i mean that......we all can't figure out why nobody has any or saved any either....if you get them back out into the world 1 more time i can guarentee you'd make millions of happy customers and the strain would stay mainstream this time.

i'm here as a customer along with many others, asking you to release the skunky skunk....we feel it's a BIG part of cannabis history that is a missing link right now...it is/was alot of peoples favorite strain, old school smokers favorites, alot of it is/was remembering it being what they think of when they thing of cannabis.

different seeds for different needs....exactly, you feel skunk#1 is what you liked most and what you needed in a strain....others feel "skunk#2" is what they like most and need in a strain.

it's true skunk#1 does breed true and is stable....do you think, or does the skunk#2 breed as stable and true?

not many seed producers/breeders make stable strains today that is true...skunk is easy to make great hybrids with.......alot of killer strains have skunk as a building block.....alot of people want the skunky skunk to grow/smoke/ and use as a building block.

i've said it before....i'm personally not a hater....you did your thing and took the strain in the direction you felt was best or what you liked more...props to you......i've made my own hybrids and gave away alot of seed but to be honest they couldn't turn around and breed it to skunk because all my hybrids are already skunk crosses lol....thats how i know what you say about skunk being stable and breeding true is true.

personally i'd choose skunk#2 over skunk#1 everytime, others might feel different......this thread isn't about skunk#1 vs skunk#2, or me and others against you, to me it was a chance to express opinions, and for people to speak up about what they like/want in a skunk strain. everyone here has had a chance to do that.

in closing, i'm a man and i can say i'm sorry if you felt i was taken verbal disses at you or your work......it didn't mean to come out like that.....i'm just frustrated after buying, growing, so many skunk strains and not getting the result i would want out of a strain with the skunk name......i consider myself as a "skunkman"...i'm just not getting that knockout skunk smell i'm looking for in a skunk.

if you hold the power to release the strain we are looking for please do....many many of skunk lovers would appriciate if you could. if you feel you don't want to or have the time try to pass on a few to some people that feel the need and have the time.

my apologies

there is a thread I posted in awhile back that asks you to list the top 5 MJ strains that you smoked. And my #1 fav that I listed (is/was/4ever will be) is the RK Skunk. I hope that someone will bring this back. I believe that everyone's idea of skunk is different.

Some breeding has gone down the wrong road. Breeding for indoor types of pot with less smell was a huge priority for stealth. Many Dutch breeders went for bud with more hairs as well. It stated in Cannabis Culture issue #60 that breeding for more hairs gave the plant many, but small bracts with less surface area for the plant to develop trichs. Another bad selection of breeding was for super tight/dense nuggets, as this doesn't allow for surface area for trichs. The opposite is what T2U mentioned as I quote him - "i can agree with a certain rks having no hairs....i had a hookup for over 2 yrs of some super killer rks....these buds were smaller, not long like the sats but more chunky and tight like an indica....it basically looked like a bud of tight knitted leaves....barely any hairs on this stuff.....killer skunk smell, thick lung expanding smoke, knockout potency."
The look of a bud that has a bunch of tiny leaves gives more surface area it to contain more resin glands, than a bud that is a super solid/dense rock, which in turn would have less resin. The article mentioned that the third erroneous selection was for fuzzy looking resin glands with long sparkly stalks, but small resin heads. The author stated that these 3 attributes occasionally appear in modern Dutch varieties and should be avoided.

This article was written by Robert C.Clarke. It seemed to make a lot of sense as to where the breeding of skunk#1 and many other varieties may have been led to. Maybe before SK#1 was taken over to Europe, it had a lot more potency, more pungent smell, and was a better overall.

The skunk strain that I smoked in 1996 came from seeds given to him in 1978, and that is was inbred since then. I hope that one day someone would bring this back to us. I for one prefer the skunky skunk over the sweet skunk. If no breeder is going to take it upon them to release a RK Skunk strain or Animal Skunk, I will have to go about other means. I will just go to the zoo and buy a pet skunk. I will just smoke a bowl as the skunk sits there in a cage in my living room.

So do you guys think that the afgani is the stink in "RKS"? While Ive never grown pure afgani, any strain that has afgani seems to have that under tone. And I have a mexican(seeds) that is very funky... not so much skunky.
Mabye it is time to take matters into my own hands. Especially with my newly acquired breeding skills, lol.

What would be the best afgani seeds?

Thanks y'all! Willie?

P.S. I would eat a skunk ass first ... for some of that smoke!
With alittle hot sauce!

the real question is sams skunk#2 even what we are looking for? every other skunk strain on the market has failed would this one be different?

people might have to take matters in there own hands, i know a few people that are trying including me......i've tried almost every skunk on the market and the ones i haven't tried are confirmed no go's from other people looking for the same thing as me.

i'd definatly think the skunk odor comes from the afghan side of things, the ones i'd look for to start with is sensi seeds afghan, or maybe reefermans headstash.

it's way to obvious to see how bad people want the real skunky skunk and not sweetskunk......if i had or thought i had the genes everyone was looking for i'd be more then happy to get them back to the community. i guess some people don't feel the same way.

with everyone now searching for it and people trying to breed rks themselves eventually we all will stumble onto something.....lets work to bring back the SKUNK.

thought i would include Rezdog's conclusions on Sam...

That's all well and good...

But respet is a mutual thing, and needs to be earned and maintained...

I think the online cannabis community relies and focuses too much on gurus, and following them blindly no matter how much of a prick or no matter how rude they are (not saying Sam is either). Everyone seems to forget that all the 'gurus' are just humans, and have faults like the rest of us... Just because a well known guru/breeder says something it doesn't make it law, or right.

Just because someone was the 1st to capitilize of seed selling doesn't mean they're immuned from being questioned on their methods or beliefs..

With that being said, I don't condone flaming or shit flinging, but I believe we all deserve the right to respectfuly question anyone in the industry, especialy if they choose to post on the boards..

It's not about knocking people off their pedistals, it's about keeping these 'gurus' and breeders grounded in the 1st place.. IMHO.

Unfortunately, even asking respectful questions of some breeders can get you banned at some sites..

BTW, those that think a RKS pheno can jus simply be found in an Afghan will not find it that easy.. The smell/taste is in some of the afghans, but not in the full glory that is RKS.

Deep Chunk is my favorite Afghan so far, and it does have some earthy skunkiness to it, but it's more kushy than skunky... It has potential to bring out the RKS in some crosses, but it's all about the testing.. I have some Cheese (UK)xDC seeds that will be ready in about 2 weeks, and some ECSDxDC that will be ready shortly after.. I also have a bunch of other DC crosses that will be ready with the Cheese, but these 2 crosses have the most skunk potential.

I'm also running a pack of Petrolia Headstash, and jus put 2 DC-looking PH fems in flower recently.. But so far, in veg and early flower, DC has more of the musky-skunk smell we're looking for.. But PH may be useful in a skunk project, i will have to see how they flower.. I saved 3 PH males, and 2 of them have even more dankness than the fems, and much much better vigor and branching than DC.. But way more variance.

Started along side the PH were another Afghan IBL, called Afghan Dream, made by BC Seed Company and a few yrs old, gifted to me by a good friend.. These have more of an Afghan #1 look, than the pre-soviet DC or Petrolia look. A lil easier to grow, better branching, and even less skunkyness in veg than PH.. THey'll be flowered soon with the remaining PH girls.. I also saved 2 AD males for potential breeding, depending on how the fems turn out..

I also believe that some of the Pakistani lines have potential for skunk breeding...

With that in mind I started some of Bub's unreleased PAKI IBL line, i have 40 of these, and will preserve the line aswell, so i have 2 motives with this line... Actualy 3... I wanna see whether Bubba Kush was made with a PAKI or something like DC.. These have a real dankness to them jus like DC, but different, hard to explain.. I think i'll really love this line for breeding and personal smoke, it jus has the look and feel to it..

And for comparisons I also started some Blue Hemp Pakistani landrace, and suprisingly, these have some of the dankness we are lookign for.. Unfortunately the line has quite a few mutants (or early deformities) so I only was left with 2 non-mutant males for possible breeding, but i have a mutie fem in flower and she smells heavenly so far..

I also recently started some of my Hill Temple Indicas from bub, which is supposed to be unreal in the smell department.. It's an old stabilized afghan hybrid.. It may have some uses in the skunk finding journey..

Then, the most recent 'skunks' I started as i said before were the Trinity Oregon Skunk beans, and the 1989 SSSC Skunk #1 F2s... I have alot of hope for the TOS, but have a feeling the '89 F2s may be more of the same bland sweet skunk... but who knows, there maybe some cheese-worthy phenos in there.

I also started some Daywrecker (AKA Headband or Original Deisel) S1s as I really like the skunkyness of ECSD, but I'm thinking alot of ECSD's skunkyness comes from the Mass Super Skunk side..

Along with that stuff I have a few skunky 'elites' to work with, and new stuff all the time..

I'm hoping that with some combination of the above I will be able to find something that will reliably produce skunky-skunk plants.. Obviously it's gonna be a big task (maybe impossible) to create a stabilized strain with 100% RKS phenos, and that's not really my goal... The main goal is to get a good basic line with consistant skunkyness, with the odd RKS (special) pheno..

Personaly, that's all it would take to make me happy, a basic, truly skunky line..

People must remember that a true RKS pheno is ELITE as they come... I mean, it's obviously rarer than pretty much everything else avaliable... Cause all the guys with cheese, ECSD, HP#1, chemdog, etc etc etc are STILL jonesing for a good RKS..

So i think people may not be very realistic in thinking even Sam has a line that's IBL RKS, or to expect another breeder to release a stable RKS line.. That would be like expecting a breeder to release seeds that produced a pre 2k1 Bubba Kush pheno in every female seed... it's jus not gonna happen..

Altho I would love to see Sam prove me wrong, or another breeder..

As a side note the strongest smelling strain I have ever had is the REAL Hogsbreath that shit was so damn stanky a jar and a vaccum seal could not contain it...I remember when I was younger my mom threatened to kick me out of the house it smelt it up so bad....Insane smell!! I had some skunk in 94' and that was the last time i have seen skunk that actually smelled like skunk....

Could anyone enlighten me on these Skunk#1's I grew from seed back in 1994? At the time I was told these were original Positronics stock and I still have some beans left today. As you can see I also did a thorough pollination on that female plant, but due to my inexperience most of the seeds were harvested while still a little on the greenish side. I haven't tried germinating them yet and doubt if they still will, but I wonder if it would be worth the effort. Which Skunk#1 may this have been? Roadkill or sweet, or is there no telling by looking at the plant's stature etc....?

Thanx anyway for any constructive thoughts on this... :joint:

I love your atitude, beancounter and I agree with you on all but one thing. I've seen very consistent true breeding roadkill skunks and I'm certain they can be brought back in a very consistent true breeding form if not for indoors at least outdoors. I feel the only relationship skunk 1 has to a real old school skunk is that it had a huge hand in it's demise. Southerners have been growing skunky herb in the south since alcohol prohibition.

There are two approaches I'm taking to bring back skunks. Firstly I'm desperately seeking out seeds of the hairless skunk and I'm confident they will be found. Secondly lu and I are breeding one from scratch not using an afghan but a ubc chemo a manga rosa and a thai.

Good Luck in the Quest my friends!

In the short term I'll smoke what I have got, but would be glad to be a test grower.

Peace...

I dont think anyone said that it could be as easy as finding some afgan pheno.
But nothing is as hard as you guys make it out to be. This is weed we are talking
about. Bread by stoners, grown by stoners!
Dont take yourselves so seriously!

Bread by stoners, lol sounds tasty! I personally know stoners who've composed symphonies, worked as an achitect on the international space spacestation, designed the stock trading network for merrill lynch, are leading permaculture consultants for the united nations, another who's the head of the organic horticulture dept at a major university, and another who has published textbooks in topology and heads the mathematics dept at a university not to mention people like carl sagan, lester grinspoon, muddy waters, fela kuti and alexander shulgin.

Good post Z ^^^ ...I am not a "stoner"... I hate that word it is people who dont smoke that call us "stoners" and it is negative reference to us who smoke cannabis .....I am a cannabis connoisseur/lover/enthusiast...It is not nearly as easy as your implying Willie or it would already be floating around years ago

American Heritage Dictionary

ston·er (stō'nər)
n.

1. One that stones.
2. Slang.

a. One who is habitually intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.
b. One who is a delinquent or failure.

^^^^ That is not what I want to be associated with....Anyways grow on.....
