if yer dog picks these buggers up.

we shoot those bastards (porcupines, not pitbulls) out of the trees with our .22's when we're out grouse hunting, you can hear the bullets hit with that satisfying hollow-ish 'whump' sound. they're good for nothing; they strip the bark from beautiful pine in the forest, if they strip enough bark the tree dies, all winter long they're in the trees, well at least until we spot 'em.

And of course, last but certainly not least is what happens to our dogs when they encounter one, I think they have only one natural predator and that's the fisher, and fisher are few 'n far between.......

^^^, that be true, fishers love porkys
i've run into fishers years ago during some wood walks
fastest things in the woods, they really are like greased lightening
supposedly a fisher will kill the porcupine with a sharp blow to the head up in a tree
just in the right spot where there are no quills
and the fisher will be on the ground before the porcupine hits the ground, fishers are that fast

You know you live in the country if......

You go to visit a friend who lives 5 miles away, and a couple hours later you drive home..
On the entire round trip, you don't meet or pass, or even see, another car on the road...:woohoo:

No doubt that civilization isnt for everyone but you sanctimonius whiners come off as rubes repeatedly disparaging the wondrous aspects of a great city.

sanctimonious whiners?... rubes?....

I've travelled the world in my life and have met wonderful people almost everywhere... and most of them shared their weed with a traveler in need..

But you shouldn't call names, and if you don't like this thread, there are plenty of other threads for you to read here at icmag...

Kinda, sorta, something here for everybody...

In the city they are pigeons, in the country they are crows. The evolution took place at the county line.

Really? In my experience people tend to be quite nice in cities across the globe. Sometimes the validation of your opinion isnt the thing you found but rather what you brought along.

No doubt that civilization isnt for everyone but you sanctimonius whiners come off as rubes repeatedly disparaging the wondrous aspects of a great city.

tell ya what, I worked in & lived in midtown Manhattan for decades, people ignore each other to the point of being rude.

example:
Occasionally I would pick a day that I'd 'nod & greet' every person walking towards me and who would also meet my eyes.

Invariably I would be ignored 100% of the time, for starters most women don't even look into the eyes of men (or at least me) who might be checkin' them out, and the guys who looked over at me for that brief moment where I would just give a nod & grin would just look away.

btw, I walked about 40 blocks every day in NYC, I crossed paths with 100s of thousands of people in those years.

Here's a specific example of how greedy or selfish some people are. In Feb 1978 we were hit by a blizzard, the electric 3rd rails of our commuter trains were not functional. My dad & I were fortunate enough to catch the last train out of NYC & into Westchester county, it was an ancient diesel rig, we got there early enough to get 2 seats, the train was quickly a standing room only situation.

Once we exited the underground portion (42nd St to 99th St) it was very slow going as the tracks ahead of us were needing to be cleaned. An hour or so into the journey my dad suggested to me that we offer our seats to two other people standing there, nobody old or infirmed mind you, just a couple of typical NY commuters.

The rest of the ride lasted 3.5 hours more, the 2 people we gave our seats to never offered them back, nor did they offer them to anyone else; dad and I were fairly obvious in offering up our seats (hoping others might follow), but not another single person offered their seat to anyone else.

just some selfish fucks riding the rails.......

that's life in the BIG city nf4/20, nothing you say could sway me to think otherwise.

Been there and got far away from that, now where I live things are much kinder. About 3 nights ago I got stuck in someones driveway (turning around) who was not at home, I walked to the side of the roadway & flagged down the first pickup driving by, less than 2 minutes later I was rolling down the road. The nearest town was 6 miles away & has a population of 111 people, we like it that way.

When that happens to a dog, do they usually learn to leave porcupines alone - or do they sometimes make the same mistake again ?

My female dog has learned to leave he mature porcupines alone, now she bullies the baby porcies around. They do swat back at her with their tails... Every now and then she comes back with a face full of soft needles! Serves the bitch right.

"Almost everywhere" , just not in the city huh? The rats are kinder than and smarter than city people yet you scold me for calling names?

Youre a ludicrous gas bag.

I used to live in a city of 8 million residents. Most of them were scumbags who couldn't compare to my country neighbors of today. Big cities desensitize and numb the people who live in them. They literally consume ones soul. Fuck them. Country and freedom or death!

You know you live in the country if.........

you are sitting around with friends and then the conversations comes to killing chickens..as it often does.... and you have in depth discussions about each other's methods.

There will be discussions about which is better - chopping with an axe or twist and pull neck breaking.....and there's always one guy who does it differently - one handed ! (grab the bird's neck in one hand with your palm facing down then very quickly spin the bird in a reverse vertical arc then do half wrist turn on the downward arc and the neck will snap.....your arm should not be fully extended, bend your elbow which will reduce the diameter of the arc increasing the velocity, the wrist twist must be done very fast, your palm should end up facing upwards and stop your arm at the bottom of the arc (when the circle swing is completed), your arm and the bird's head stops immediately but the bird's body keep on going snapping it's neck instantly. I've done this, but I prefer to pull and twist with two hands in different directions over the side of my thigh

i live in a "small" city. but within 3 minutes, i can see deer, turkeys etc. actually, after dark the deer come out like vampires. i used to do a buttload of duck hunting, drifting the river that goes thru town. obviously, it does NOT circle back to where you started. :) in all of those years, with hair to my ass, dressed in camo, covered in mud & blood, not ONCE did i fail to catch a ride back up river to my jeep/truck/whatever. and it was NEVER anyone i knew, just folks willingly picking up an obvious nutcase out in the coldest weather of the year carrying a shotgun. try THAT in a city...:tiphat:
