All it takes is a stupid infectious beat to tame the masses of morons who may not even necessarily believe in the lyrics, or care about the lyrics. Long as they can get drunk and dance to these stupid beats, we'll have mainstream rap, unfortunately.

Almost all commercial music sucks, don't just stick it on rap. How many of you are listening to Maroon5 and all them gay emo punk MTV bands?

Yeah, cept the hiphop mainstream is the most outrageous and stupid
But I dunnoo, that "honky tonk badonkadonk" song comes pretty close to rivaling the rap

Check out cage's older stuff (movie for the blind, the weathermen mixtape). When eminem came onto the scene he copied cage's style and then went huge. Cage is like eminem, except on a whole lot more acid.

100% True. Cage is way faster and more intelligent.

Tame one, cannibal ox/company flow, el-p, mr lif, mfdoom, c-rayz walz, murs, ra the ruggedman, so many others.

Great east coast list! I could never get enough of Company Flow and Tame one.

Also 100% true. It's not about who has the most raw talent anymore which is sad. I could sit here all day and call out which band/emcee copied which emcee but it would take my whole day up.

music is suppose to be enternatinment though. do you want rappers to sing about politics and science and technology?

Music was how tribes communicated back in the day. The world's ****ed up especially for those on the bottom of the class war. What kind of topics do you wish to listen to, I've got music for days? How is herb "yummy" if you don't eat it?

biftaman hit it right on the head.
Big L, was the greatest rapper ever.
too bad he left us early....

Wow, I didn't know there were so many real hiphop heads on here! Very cool.

Listen to some Visionaries, Dilated Peoples, Little Brother, or turntablist crew The BeatJunkies. There is so much more positive music out there, and it doesn't have to be about politics or science either!

Even old school heads, like KRS-One, Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy...

One thing I love about hiphop is it's truly worldwide and transcends any sex, race, cultural or language barriers. I mean I see pictures from Europe and it's so awesome to see how well received it is.

Props to my fellow heads.

They might be a bit before your time but their was a group called 'public enemy' and politics and social issues was their only content and they were one of the most successful mainstream rap act of the 80's and early nineties.

Not the first , but one of the first very rap tunes by grand master flash and the furiuos five did a little ditty called "the Edge" which is about the social problems of the time.

Most Rap I listen to is about social issues and politics

Soneone who impressed me recently is a guy named "Brother Ali" listen to his track "uncle Sam goddamn" and "Take me Home"

PS I cant get enough of "Company Flow" either!

.. so true... nowadays it's all about production really. You still got true hip-hop heads out there though... check out Talib Kweli, Little Brother (from NC which is where I'm from... these guys are really trynna put north carolina on the map despite "breaking up") Common, Mos Def, Jean Grae, Dilated Peoples, J Dilla (R.I.P.), Nas,... they are still out there you just gotta look for em.

Props to everyone posting. This is some good stuff.

One of the best things we could do is spread some of our local favorite music in hopes of giving them more shine. I'm originally from Los Angeles, and I'm blessed to in a locale that has a ton of good unheard ( mainstream wise ) music.

Here's a short list of artists/crews I think you'd like if you yearn for classic hiphop of old:

Evidence, Rakka Iriscience, Dj Babu of Dilated Peoples
2Mex, LMNO, Key Kool, Lord Zen, Dannu and Dj Rhettmatic of Visionaries
Aceyalone, Mikah 9, P.E.A.C.E., Self Jupiter of Freestyle Fellowship/ Project Blowed.
Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, J-Rocc, Percee P from Stones Throw Records ( a great LA indie label )

Another great producer I like is Kev Brown from lowbudget. He's from Maryland, but works with a lot of west coast artists

Peace,

whoever sings that "shawdy right there is a teeennnnn"

It just makes me sick that these assholes are featured on mtv cribs, or whatever showing off their millions of dollars for making nothing but garbage music.

Any comments?

What is up with society these days its like its meant to make us stupid.
its not the rap that is crappy , its the overall ignorance of the fans that has many rap moguls putting this crap out. this present generation jsut does not understand what good rap music is, like they say, ignorance is truly bliss.

most of them say not a damned thing even worth repeating, but they are making millions, does that say more about the rappers or the fan base that they have? i guess maybe wiggers have finally found the peaceful median between nwa and will smith huh? roflmao SOULJA BOY, HEY!!! LOL crazy yo, crazy

But my simple question, why do people buy their shit?

Because like in every other aspect of life, people have shitty taste in music and listen to whatever is played for them by clearchannel.

It's the same with books, movies, television, and most other consumer preference.. sheeple consume what is produced by the mainstream output source

Exactly. What the f is up with this music? I don't find any value in it whatsoever. I do listen to some rap but it's certainly not like the mainstream stuff. Something with more thought and content is what I'm looking for. Not just one hook played/said over and over again.
