Yeah, Iv'e googled POMH before and it is right there in ya face, hahahaha. But apparently there are other people who use that nic because there is a myspace with the name and it isn't me. haha

Actually it can be funny to google some nics......everynow and then you may get a good laugh, I did the other day.

But I knew it was like this with google for a long time.

You have to admit it would be a little bit funny if someone else had the same screen name as you and got raided because they posted their address somewhere. Especially if it was some kid who lived with their parents.

How so?

I can understand wanting people to be able to find the site through a search engine, but that doesn't mean the bots need to peruse and catalog every post.

An advertising website cant block the bots from the entire site, its counterproductive. What gets cached by the search engines is the main page of the forum but nothing after that, hence why our names show up. Its just the "online" list. Goes to show why you never use duplicate userIDs on sites where there is a danger to being tracked down.

Really? Then why does it take you to specific individual threads by username?

No, it is not just the online list.

As I said, there's no reason for the bots to have access to the forums. Stopping them after the first page would still let people find the site and what it's about, without putting everyone's posts on Google.

And please don't ever refer to IC as an advertising website again. Yes, it has ads, but because those advertisers need Gypsy's clients, not because Gypsy needs the advertising income.

Sigs, too.

Don't forget not to use the same sigs in your posts among various websites.

I've been able to track people's posts across several websites and forums by googling their sigs.

No shit? Well that is weird. I only showed up in the online list, just assumed everyone else did. Maybe too new to the site to be cached on a thread...dunno. Im VERY surprised the bots havent been turned away from the forum contents though. Very basic security measure that should have been enacted already. Gypsy????

Btw, advertising means just that. Are there advertisements? If yes, then its an advertising website. Paid advertising on a site generally requires that you do not block search bots....often contractually. Every click on a Google or Yahoo link may display a banner for the advertiser. I cant speak for IC's vendor advertising agreements but this is the norm within webhosting and SEO circles. YMMV. That could explain why theres no robots.txt in effect for the forums.

EDIT: The search I spoke of was Yahoo. Google did turn up more.

Just tried you name, and the second link goes to a thread you started.

Yup, you're in there.

As far as standard industry advertising, two things:

I've never, on any site I've managed or created, allowed an advertiser to dictate who gets access to my site and to what degree.

Also, there is nothing 'norm' about advertising on sites like this :D

BTW, check your PMs.

I have nothing to worry about - it took me forever to get an email addy with this nick. Surprising how many wallstreet related topics are on the internet.

And I don't use it on any other site - but I do have a well known, googleable id that I use everywhere else.

It's scary running your name, and having stuff you typed years ago pop up.

Well maybe you should post a bunch of fake addresses using your now internet famous cultivation handle :p

Surf anonymously. I recommend guardster.com or anonymouse.org to surf securely

Use a less well known forum and/or use file shares to download PDFs and movies on growing.

Popularity is a bitch isn't it. Don't forget OG. I think these communities needs to do a 360 and rethink the sponser driven high life and perhaps try out something like anonymity driven distributed information services. Where we have multiple web fronts linked with a common backend so we NEVER lose the communities data even for a raid. Plus no one site need get 100 times more traffic than all the others. That's how we get into trouble.

Use a FREE open source webforum written in perl and you can host 200 gigs with 2000 gigs worth of transfer bandwidth for like 7 bucks a month.

PLUS the site could be hosted by a third party with no ties to seed sales, breeders, or any of that other BS.

It's fun to talk about cannabis right, but wouldn't it be way cooler to have THE perfect online gardening resource. Look OG was 5 times as big as this site, but even it was severely limited by the fact it was so obviously for cultivating MJ. While that's cool and all we don't live in a world where publicizing out illegal hobby is smart.

So either we go to private invite only communities, we use gardening forums without mentioning weed (best option), or we wait for the man to take down our sites and/or for interpersonal conflicts without the 'business' to ruin the forum with ego and censorship.

Plus what happens when weed goes legal. WHo is going to pay for this site? I don't like the idea of donating my time to a community that doesn't own it's own content. We need THIRD party representation so we have real professionals running the forums and doing so without the distractions of managing other business ventures.

It's a good idea. The time might swing toward legalization today and they might swing back to police state tomorrow. The mafia doesn't have a damn public web forum and if they do at least it's not called... Mafia International

It will also help to pick very generic names like. Mr Smith or celebrity names or porn star names or anything that will produce false results against your handle if someone is searching for it.

Sooo, you think Gypsy has a rack full of servers in the back room? :D

IC is hosted by a hosting company, there was a post around here a while back where someone noticed the web hosts name on something and freaked out.

Just curious, who's going to pay for this uninvolved third party to run the forums? I kind of like having folks who understand the nature of our community in charge of things.

Also, why would Gypsy no longer pay for the site if weed was legal? Hell, he'd be doing bumper business. Why do you think that a site devoted to growing weed and procuring seeds would lose business if weed were legal? I just can't follow your logic on that one?

Invite only communities - How would ppl know who to invite or where to ask to be invited?

Gardening sites and not talk about MJ, how is that the best option compared to IC? I rather like being able to go to a site and get information specific to the plant I'm growing. How could a rose grower help me identify a hermi, especially if I can't post pics?

Another thing I'm confused about is your multi-faceted web front with a single backend. What happens when the host of the backend gets tagged? OG did have multiple web fronts with a single backend, and when the backend went, it all went. Who pays for the webfronts? Who pays the backend server fees?

I'm just not sure what your proposing. I'm not even sure you know what your proposing, as I can't make heads or tails out of it :biglaugh:

Are you saying it should be like a WeedWiki? Still need someone to pay for the hosting, and you still don't own your contributions. As a matter of fact, you'll never own your own contributions unless you own the site, or you copyright your material. I'm certainly not dashing off to the copyright office with my posts about growing pot.

Or are you wanting to do a TOR hosted type site? I could see that, but you're gonna have to wait until people can actually use TOR like they do their standard connection, because TOR runs like molasses.

I don't see "THE perfect online gardening resource" in your post. Did I miss it?

The only thing I see that even relates to this thread at all is the last line-

"It will also help to pick very generic names like. Mr Smith or celebrity names or porn star names or anything that will produce false results against your handle if someone is searching for it"
