What is Skunk?

Red, those GA skunks were awesome. Though they weren't big on subtlety they definitely were very strong even by todays standards. The only problem I had with some of the GA skunk is that many growers used to brick their herb but the seeds grew into wonderful plants.

I do believe that the name "Skunk" was first coined in Northern California to descibe the Afagani strains and the hybrids, that were first imported into the west coast and spread east.

Meaning Afghanis were first imported into California and Oregon in the 70s, and the basic Afghan strains and the name "Skunk" traveled east together.

Has anyone gotten Sam The Skunkman's opinion on the "roadkill" skunk? If anyone would know if skunk was ever SKUNKY (Skunk spray smells like hippy armpit) It'd be him. Did the dutch really breed out the skunk ass?? or was the skunk always sweet?? I grew it and noticed a sour/bitter smell when squeezing the buds.....but that ain't no skunks ass....

Edit: I was just going to mention getting outdoor non bricked buds of REAL SKUNK stuff around the late nineties. But that bud wouldn't stink up a whole house with a gram, but the burnt smell lingered on you like nothing else.

The original skunk used to be so skunky you could put it in five baggies rolled up in a t-shirt in your drawer in the back of the house. If someone showed up they swore your dog got hit by a skunk.

That brings back some great memories. The real skunk became a total stealth issue because you couldn't just bring it around with you in a baggie like you could with the brickweed we were used to. Even a little bit smelled strong from across the room.

I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it: if today's stoners could get ahold of some road-kill skunk, some old-school Thai, and some Columbian Gold, (late-70s/early-80s) all of this Dutch-based crap weed we see in the clubs would never be grown or smoked again. Even the supposed Diesels and OG Kush doesn't compare, and I've smoked them all.

Northern Lights and weakened Skunk #1 have degraded the smoking experience, and indoor growing with it's emphasis on yield and quick flowering times has pretty much been the nail in the coffin.

I don't care if I sound like an old fart. The weed really was way better 25 years ago.

i don't know where you get your canna-history, but Sam's Skunk #1 IS real skunk... the taste/smell may be different, but being as Sam's the father of this strain it's really up to him what the proper incarnation of it should be...

hold on a second while i quit laughing ahahahahahahahahahahhahah ok i'm done.

sorry but "sams" skunk is not skunk.....i don't care if people think he's the skunkman...your not the skunkman if you don't have real skunk....put that in your canna history pipe and smoke it. sams the father of a sweet plant, which shouldn't be called skunk, why would you ever call a sweet plant skunk? it's the most ignorant thing i've ever heard to be honest. when you name a strain it should have some meaning or resemblence of the name you gave it.

no knock on you or sam but come on, to name a fruity sweet plant skunk if funny. no other strain in the world has such a wrong name....period.

It should be possible to be bred again, the landraces used in it are still around aren't they? Zamalito says he is working on a new line of skunk, maybe he'll get a rks pheno? I certainly hope so, you older people got me curious about it.

And they say weed is 5 times stronger now than it was in the sixties:)

it's all a marketing scam imo, how many people bought "skunk" thinking they were gonna get a well known stinky skunky ass strain? why else would you buy skunk? the plan worked to perfection...millions of people bought the strain.

Hola Angel Eyes I must say the Colombian Gold 2006 is every bit as good or better then the golds from the 70s-80s, I've smoked them both.

i kind of have ot agree here. when i saw skunk seeds i thought immeaditly of RKS then i found out they are sweet smelling so i didnt bother. to me a swwet strain is not RKS. Aint nothing sweet about RKS, the smell is fuckin awful the high puts you on your ass, aint nothing sweet about it . Skunk #1 aint skunk to me and many others who have tried RKS. the only strain that should be called skunk smells like a fucking skunk, not sweet, hence the name

exactly...i mean sour strains have sour names, fruity strains have fruity names,ect.... so where exactly does a sweet fruity strain have the name skunk fit into this equation?

hard to say, to some it might to others it might not...there were a few variations of rks....but they ALL stunk like you just ran over a skunk....tasted dank and thick....and got you wrecked.

if reeferman bring it back then he's the man, anyone that brings this strain back will be famous in the canna community, it would go down in history.

i am surprised no breeder has tried to find and work RKS. Anyone wanting to win a cup need only to enter RKS. i dont care how rigged the cup is, RKS would win hands down .

EXACTLY. 5x stronger and those landrace strains are still around, why doesn't the weed smell like my dog attacked Pepe Le Pue?

I had a guy come into my house on trim day, mind you I grow LifeSaver mostly Blueberries and Lemons, and dude says "I smell skunk!". Dude's NOT A SMOKER. I smell blueberries, he smells skunk.

How can you really know for sure what something smelled like 20 years ago?

The skunk from my day was mexi-dirt-brick weed or local homegrown from seeds of said mexi-dirt-brick weed. The potency wasn't even close to today's standards. Shit I wish I had kept some of those seeds, just to grow it out and pass it around.

So - is it really RKS? or NOSTALGIA?
