Wearing Masks

in theory you should put a new mask every time you have to wear one. but no one does it, they scrunch them in their pocket while not needed, some pull them over the chin like in south parks pandemic special. some wear them on their arm or wrist while not in use. i tend to put mine in a ziplock bag while not wearing it. i use 1 new one for an outing, but that still means i take it off and put it back a few times. my instinct tells me to take it off as soon as its possible so my body can breath fresh air as much as possible while outside.

its a great rubbish crisis too with all these masks ending up in the trash at best and in the oceans at worst. think about the amount of extra trash being produced, don't forget all the ppe, mountains and mountains of extra plastic trash. i'd like to get reusable cloth masks, but the gov has said those are not effective and give wearers a false sense of protection, so for now we are using the 1 way surgical masks like most seem to recommend. at least they have become cheap.

CDC

. The general public can use cloth masks to protect against infection spread in the community. In community settings, masks may be used in 2 ways. First, they may be used by sick persons to prevent spread of infection (source control), and most health organizations (including WHO and CDC) recommend such use. In fact, a recent CDC policy change with regard to community use of cloth masks (1) is also based on high risk for transmission from asymptomatic or presymptomatic persons (32). According to some studies, ?25%–50% of persons with COVID-19 have mild cases or are asymptomatic and potentially can transmit infection to others. So in areas of high transmission, mask use as source control may prevent spread of infection from persons with asymptomatic, presymptomatic, or mild infections. If medical masks are prioritized for healthcare workers, the general public can use cloth masks as an alternative. Second, masks may be used by healthy persons to protect them from acquiring respiratory infections; some randomized controlled trials have shown masks to be efficacious in closed community settings, with and without the practice of hand hygiene (33). Moreover, in a widespread pandemic, differentiating asymptomatic from healthy persons in the community is very difficult, so at least in high-transmission areas, universal face mask use may be beneficial. The general public should be educated about mask use because cloth masks may give users a false sense of protection because of their limited protection against acquiring infection (16). Correctly putting on and taking off cloth masks improves protection (Table). Taking a mask off is a high-risk process (34) because pathogens may be present on the outer surface of the mask and may result in self-contamination during removal (31).

I notice Biden ditched the cloth mask for a medical one.

- thinking about it - how often do people actually change or wash their mask? - probably the majority of people don't do that regularly enough - or at all - so the mask becomes one of the most dangerous vectors of the virus - gets nice and warm and moist over the mouth/nose - where germs can breed easy -

I had a supply of surgical masks for using in my lab and found I could sterilize them a few times in a bleach solution. Now my supply is degraded so I began using biker type fabric masks which are washable. I figure if they prevent blowing out a candle, they are effective.

For me personally it's a rule, if I touched the mask is either to put it on or take it off and discard. But yeah lots of people reuse single use masks and touch them a lot, keep them in their dirty hand or in the pocket, then use it again.

I removed the mask to smell the potatoes at the grocery store.

I watch for masks in the parking lot. They are easy to sterilize.

I finally washed my paisley bandana that keeps the karens off my back at the grocery store. Places where outside people go, like ag stores, NOBODY is doing the mask thing except for a few customers. If YOU wanna wear a mask, feel free to do so.

I had to send off some cash in a package, and like a good citizen I wore the mask, glasses, and the hat. AND paid for the postage with cash.

I'm sure I will receive a buncha love for this post :)

I have not nor will I spend one precious penny on one of their masks.
We now have companies turning these things out by the 1000's (probably millions) for us to consume for their profit.

I personally refuse to play along. I have masks that were handed out in the beginning for free. They are in the glove box of my truck still.
I am now wearing the 2nd. of those masks, as the 1st one broke.
I've never washed it and probably have worn it for at least 3 months now? I shove it in the side pocket of my purse til next I need it.
:dancer:

Wear one that you can wash.

If reused enough times without being washed or desinfected, then the mask itself gets to be a vector of transmission. Anyway, it's everyone with their choice of wearing a mask properly or not, or not wearing one at all. Too bad others will suffer because of the ones that don't care.

Herd immunity in the US would ultimately result in 6.4 million deaths.
The US needs a national health care system.

You something like what the rest of the developed world has?

No one wants immigration, but if the US kept Americans healthy and alive longer, there would be less need for immigration.

The only thing holding the US back is capitalists constantly pretending Socialism is Communism.

almost seems like the Sweedes have more immunity from it at this stage. really weird. its too early to say, but if they dont get a surge this winter we have to seriously look at why? could it be that they have gotten to the magical 60% immunity level and thats why they have no surge?
Maybe the mutated version hasn't visited yet.
