By ethical standards they're required to recuse themselves where there's a conflict of interest. But there's rarely a law with teeth to enforce that expectation on SCOTUS and some others with untamable abnormal egos..damn shame ALL judges don't have the necessary ethics to recuse themselves when it is needed...
i'm trying to read between the lines here. is this ^ what you meant ? "abnormal egos" yes.
i'm starting to see interest in justices serving a certain period of time instead of us being saddled with the asshats till they drop dead.

Positions of authority often attract specific personality types or preponderances (*See MMPI scores for such) meaning they (positions of authority) of all walks in life are that much more in need of stringent ethics and oversight, not lesser or fewer standards, yet those very same types of positions (judges, cops, etc) tend to see themselves as LESS in need of such oversight, and even more resentful of oversight than the average.i'm trying to read between the lines here. is this ^ what you meant ? No way! I'm like Trump and I go catatonic if I open a book... but at the time they showed the trailer for the movie on TV several times...
...And the fact is that as a kid I read a lot... But it was the end of the dictatorship and the arrival of democracy, becoming more and more stupid every day... I think it's because I suddenly went from living on my knees to being able to get up upright... You momentarily lack blood in your brain, and you get dizzy and everything...
