Gourd is probably correct. Their rind/skin dries hard and can be very durable. Vessels and containers are made from them, even instruments. Pumpkins tend to rot.

"'La Canebière' is the historic high street in the old quarter of Marseille, France. About a kilometer long, it runs from the Old Port of Marseille to the Réformés quarter. It has been called the Champs-Élysées of Marseille.

The name 'Canebière' ('Canabiera' in Provençal dialect) comes from the word Cannabis in Latin, as the area around the Old Port were originally hemp fields and Marseille was one of the world's largest trader of hemp baskets and ropes from the Middle Ages until the 1930s, when other fibers were used instead."

City Hall in Downtown Biddeford, Maine

The Biddeford Dozen

The beautiful state of Maine is known for many things, humor is not one of them... Should it be?

On the morning of April Fools 1982, Locals in the picturesque town of Biddeford Maine woke up to a peculiar sight... Placed around town in almost a taunting fashion were large ziplock bags full of cannabis.

Seemingly playing with the police, a large bag of marijuana was placed on the sidewalk right in front of the Police Station... Two more large bags at the Stations back doors and one just leaning against a parked police cruiser...

The more the town looked around the streets of downtown, the more bags of pot they found. 14 bags in all were found in the streets of Biddeford (11 bags) and in the sister city Saco(3 bags).

With no leads and no one confessing to the 'crime', the mystery of the Biddeford Dozen remains unsolved!

A police official summed up the unusual joke in the cities news release the same day,

"Who knows how many more bags were found but weren't turned in"

Newspaper article from the United International Press, April 1, 1982

Copping a Bag of Weed

"BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Investigators are trying to figure out who scattered plastic bags of marijuana around the police station and along downtown sidewalks.

'If it was an April Fool's joke, it was an awfully expensive one,' said Police Detective Guy Godbout.

Fourteen one-pound packets were recovered late Wednesday and early Thursday in Biddeford and the adjoining city of Saco. The 11 bags found in Biddeford were worth more than $7,000, Beaupre said.

'It was all over the place,' he said. 'We found one bag on the sidewalk in front of the station, two near the back door, and another we found in the parking lot adjacent to the building near a cruiser.'

Other bags were found on sidewalks in front of a bank, a community center and a post office.

'Who knows how many more bags were found but weren't turned in,' Beaupre said."

"Tex: Boy oh boy, you picked a bad time to fly, Billy. They're gueillas all over the place blowing planes and all. They hit four planes in four days. But I guess you young people don't read the news anymore. That, and with our people back home kicking up a shitstorm about the flow of heroin from Turkey...
Billy Hayes: I didn't have heroin. It was just a little hashish.
Tex: That doesn't matter. A drug's a drug.
Billy Hayes: It was only two kilos.
Tex: It doesn't matter if it was two kilos or 200 kilos. The Turks love catching foreigners. They want to show the rest of the world that they're fighting the drug trade.
Billy Hayes: By the way, who are you? What's your name?
Tex: That's not important.
Billy Hayes: Are you with the American couselet here in Istanbul?
Tex: Somethin' like that." Midnight Express
