Statue possibly holding both cannabis and opium flowers with Wheat, Sunflowers and Cannabis on main fountain behind. The Friendship of People Fountain or the Friendship of Nations Fountain in Moscow, Russia


Construction of The Friendship of People Fountain or the Friendship of Nations Fountain in the VDNKh park (also called The All-Russia Exhibition Center) in Moscow, was started just after WW2 in 1951 and completed in 1954.

16 statues of women representing the different nationalities and Republics of the Soviet Union are represented circling the main column featuring pillars of Cannabis, Wheat and Sunflowers...

Some of the statues representing the different nationalities and Republics of the Soviet Union seem to be holding opium or poppy flowers along with Cannabis...

A few statues even have depictions of both growing at some of their feet...

The Republics of the Soviet Union depicted by the female Statues are- the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR), the Uzbek SSR, the Georgian SSR, the Lithuanian SSR, the Latvian SSR, the Tajik SSR, the Turkmen SSR, the Karelo-Finnish SSR, the Estonian SSR, the Armenian SSR, the Moldavian SSR, the Kirghiz (Kyrgyz ) SSR, the Azerbaijan SSR, the Kazakh SSR & the Soviet Socialist Republic of Belarus (Byelorussian SSR).

The Source of Happiness

Lets take a history stroll going back to the Vedic origin story of the "churning of the sea" that just so happens to be where we find the birthplace of cannabis...

Here some of the Gods were living on earth when Indra, king of all the gods and all of the three worlds, was a dick to Rishi Duravas...

In return Duravas cursed the Gods and they all began to weaken in strength letting the Demons gain equal power as gods on earth...

Seeking a cure, the weakening Gods with the help of Brahma go to Vishnu on the edge of the Ocean of Milk. Vishnu answers...

“Do now as I command: cast into the Milky Sea potent herbs, then take Mount Mandara for churning-stick, the serpent Vasuki for rope, and churn the Ocean for the dew of life [amrita]”

Proposing to make 'amrita', a sacred substance that bestows immortality and vigor, but the workload exceeded the weakened strength of the Gods, so they partner with the daityas (demons) promising equal share in the amrita...

As the Gods and Demons churn the Ocean of Milk together, things start to appear out of the mixture... First to rise out was Surabhi, the wish-giving cow. Things continued to rise out of churned 'Ocean of Milk' until...

Poison rose out... Wanting to save the world, Shiva grabbed the poison and drank it...

Choking Shiva turns blue...

At the dimmest of times for Shiva, choking on poison, Dhanwantari appears holding the vessel of amrita, saving Shiva...

Upon the appearance of the amrita, the Demons wanted their promised cut, but Vishnu denies their request for the fair share starting a 12 day battle(or the 12 year war) between the Gods and the Demons...

Wanting to protect the Amrita the gods take it and hide it in the mountains, spilling a single drop upon the ground of the mountain. From this single drop upon the earth, a cannabis plant grows... The birth of Cannabis on this plant...

Shiva making Bhang


Some time later, after a family argument, Shiva retreats to the Himalayas. He finds shade laying in a field under a cannabis plant...

Awakening under the plant and taken by the beauty of the leaves Shiva crushes and eats it, making the first Bhang...

Taken by this, Shiva brings Bhang down from the mountain for all of mankind to use...

Holi festival

With these kind of origins its no wonder the Vedas believe Cannabis to be one of the 5 sacred plants on earth and said to 'have guardian angels in its leaves'...

Referred to as the "source of happiness", being a "joy-giver" and a "liberator" that was given to mankind to help "attain delight and lose fear", Cannabis holds high reverence even with the gods...

Band on the Run

In August 10, 1972, Paul & Linda McCartney and his entire band were just getting done with their performance at a concert in Gotenborg, Sweden.

While relaxing backstage, Swedish police come through the doors and arrest the entire band, Linda included...

The charge? A half pound of hashish was found in a package addressed to a band member...

Paying a 2,000 dollar fine for possession, they were released... (Sounds a little like Mexico in the 80's, 90's only it makes the news...)

The very next month, while on their Scottish property, Paul and Linda McCartney were again raided and arrested at their home, this time by Scottish police...

The crime? “illegal cultivation" of cannabis...

Story goes, a fan sent the McCartney's a package of seeds knowing of the McCartney's love for gardening.

So naturally they planted them all at their Scotland estate and in Paul's own words 'Five of them came up illegal'.

So for the crime of growing 5 cannabis plants in Scotland in 1972, they were fined £100 (about $240 at the time).

It would not be Paul's last run in with the law for the 'sweet leaf'... No worries, Paul didn't give a fuck...
