My friend, I have to thank you for the trip down memory lane. I grew up on the Colombian and Mexican strains of the 70's, and this takes me back to some happy times. We got lots of brown commercial, but there was a lot of very good Red Bud, with the occasional Gold making its way to my little rural area.

I got to sample what was known as "creeper", and sometimes we got some very good Red. I liked the Red, it had a more musky type odor and the high had a bit more body to it. The Gold was a smooth, woody, sandalwood (for a lack of a better description) tasting strain. It expanded like crazy and it was hard to hold in, even a small hit. When grown, it was tall, and had super thin leaves and 11-13 fingers, even on small plants, and flowered much longer than the Reds did. The Reds had fatter leaves, and were shorter, and flowered in less time. Most of the Mex we grew were well into flower before the Colombians even showed sex. I haven't had weed like that in so many years, and I miss those strains. There really is nothing like them today that compares. Thanks for reminding me of such a great time. Your are living the life my friend. I'm glad to see you enjoying these fine herbs.

Yes I know what you mean about the smoke from the past. When I first came to Colombia in 2002 and scored that first rolled up newspaper full of gold, I was taken right back in time. The fresh earthy sweetness and that unmistakable "lumbo" taste. The effect was even enhanced for me being with a new Colombian GF. But that first hit after 15 - 20 years of missing her almost brought a tear to my eye. But after the second hit I was feeling nothing but happiness.

Creeper! I do remember getting Colombian creeper in the 70s. I don't remember much about it but I do remember getting it. Never heard of it down here but I think it was Colombian that had a very slow onset and was potent.

On the farm my main priority will be to preserve and reproduce what I consider to be rare domestic Colombian strains. But also I would like to try other strains in this exotic climate, what strains might really flourish here.

I was thinking of some landrace SE Asian varieties and just let the flower endlessly and another was the best HAZE and other long flowering varieties. I wouldn’t be opposed to trying some hash plants or other northern delights. Any suggestions or even combinations with the Colombians.

What would you like to grow here?

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, red rider. It's been a very fun read. :)

I would personally have to start with some Haze and Thai. That climate is precious! I would be curious to see how a trippy African does as well--like a Malawi, Durban, or Zamal. You're a lucky guy.

Great ideas

But ponder this the origin of Colombian genetics is thought to be from Indonesia specifically Borneo an the other place of origin that's been mentioned is Africa

That is quite close to Thailand but further south .Indonesia is Similar to Colombian climate as parts of Colombia are further south than thailand an actually sit on the equator

Also ponder OHaze is/was pure colombian Punto Rojo to be exact

Soo the non hybridized genetics of oldschool Colombian are special and indeed worth exploring . I'm on the same page those recent CBG and ace lumbo/Thai/ African selections aswell as our aussie brothers Thais would reach full potential down there

As mentioned Ace and cannabiogen are places to look

Your there but I believe Charlie Garcia has sourced 3 lines or more for punto Rojo over some years and evident by recent reports the genetics are special . Similar with the breeding of Mangobiche

Ace Malawi or golden tiger old timers haze

How about Sams CC Thunk or haze/skunk

Bodhi also has amazing selections both sativa and indica hybrids some come to mind black triangle / clusterfunk / dank sinatra

What I remember best about top quality 70's Colombian was the intense rushing high it provided that really had staying power. Just about the time I'd think it was leveling off, it'd come on even stronger in an other-worldly sort of way. Over-toked, it could have a dark paranoid edge, real flip-out material. Crazy shit, & I loved every minute.

Haze

Haze

This is some good stuff! Yes I want to keep the Colombian seeds I found in "non crippy" bud pure and improved. I have no idea exactly how pure these Colombians are but they are very different than the obvious hybrids here and these are the focus of my intentions with the farm. But really I'm thinking a really good representation of haze would be nice to grow in this climate. Along with haze I thought about highland Thai that's wild and really difficult to grow outside the tropics. Also an interesting thought is growing a "worked" Colombian like punto rojo and see how it does back home. So many possibilities!

Man that look's tasty. Reminds me of the Redbud,or Columbian Red we used to get. I Probably shouldn't post this but I used to roll a few up back in the day and take them to school all my little girl friends used to smoke it in the bathroom, I would litterally have to hide they would come out saying shit like oh my god where is he , I need to get some more of that shit it tastes so sweet and good. The last time I had the oppertunity to smaoke any of the Red was in the early eighties. Down at Cobo hall at an AC/DC concert, coming out onto the highway traffic was all backed up we were smoking some rag weed the car next to us passes over a joint and Bingo it was Red Bud. Bumper to bumper @ a stop having time to chat they lived up the not also far from where we were going so they invited us back to party, I Fucked Up and didn't get there Phone # oh I wish I had that day to do over again. I love the old Lumbo's we used to get what people called Goverment Test Tube Weed. It was in Test tubes and it was Yellow Gold we would roll them small as a lollipop stick it was so hard to find. As fast as it was here it seemed to vanish. I MISS IT!!!:comfort:

Man thanks, I love hearing the great stories from the past. I love that smell and taste of the really good Colombian (just smoked some). I love how it makes me recall my best memories and not just remembering actions but also the way I felt.

Ya them were the good old day's. And anyone who has never got to smoke true Columbian Gold's and Red's don't know what they missed out on. Im just glad I was fortunate enough to have got to smoke them.

I think it is an established fact that in order to grow premium cannabis, long periods of intense light is required. Indisputably the sun is the most powerful light source on the earth and that tells me the best plants (effect wise) come from outdoor grows under intense natural sunshine. So my thinking is simple, better light, better pot. Next where on earth has the most intense sunshine, the tropics of course? No winter and a year round pounding of natural sunlight. Now here’s the icing on the cake, high altitude magnifies sunlight. So tropical latitudes plus next to extreme altitude equals extraordinarily great cannabis light wise. Now if you add a totally unique fertile soil medium with perfectly timed harvest and proper care cure, you should have a perfect expression of the genetics. Now there are many places around the world that share the same latitude as Colombia but within Colombia are many more “micro climates”. Within a 50 mile (km) radius of Bogota alone there are over 130 distinct micro climates, and I’m betting one of those is the perfect cannabis climate.

What I’m searching for is not a particular strain or type of cannabis so much as a variety of perfected effects. I enjoy many types of cannabis now, but none are perfect, there’s always something I can dislike in the effect. Like good potency but short duration (I don’t care what strain it is or how much I consume, I only get so high for so long) or too much euphoria that distracts clarity. Then there’s some cannabis that gives me a really nice effect then hammers my head like a baseball bat with a headache or just makes me feel bad. Or low potency stuff that seemed like somebody made the mistake of growing. In a nutshell, what I’m looking for in various degrees is. Good colors, strong pleasant smell and taste, strong to medium potency and full duration with a clean finish. I’m not looking for more potency or power, weed that is too potent no matter how good puts me to sleep. And really I like smoking more than one hit at a time, I enjoy smoking more and getting higher not lumping all the THC in one hit. Also I’m looking more for complexity in the effect, more thought provoking that is focused and motivational allowing me to put thoughts to action. But then I want another type that is super potent with devastating euphoria that can knock the hair off a dog. Of course I seem to want it all.
