Vintage 1978 -1979 Seed Grow

cooked cook

bake at 420 until nicely toasted
the only thing I could recommend(in my limited knowledge) is temp, Sin.I was recently sprouting some Thai beans that REALLY didn't want to even crack open at all after a couple days, even though some of my indicas were sprouting. It was kind of cool where they were, so I moved them to a slightly warmer place in the house, and they popped right open. I hope you get similar results with these old school beauties.
peace.

I hope you get them all to pop. I lived (barely :yoinks: )and partied hard through the 70's. Every once and awhile, I wish I had some of the good old stuff. What a difference time makes.
Real Hawaiian, Thai Stick, That classic spicey gold colored Columbian that tasted and smelled like hash. Panama Red, which I recently saw again, but I don't know how close it is to the original......ahh memories.

Hope you get a unique keeper for clones. Good luck

I just wanted to mention...I was given several (from the 70's) seeds of original Columbian Gold and Mauie Wauie. I have given or traded a few of each, but have not heard back yet on their progress.
I'll be germing some in the next week or so, I'll let you know how they perform in the germination phase. If they work out well, I'll keep a mother and be taken down memory lane whenever I like. I can't wait...*dreamy smile*

I would love to see Thai Stick and Panama Red again. If anyone has any genuine "Old School" strains that they'd like to trade with me for some of the Columbian Gold and/or Mauie Wauie seeds I have, PM me!

Happy farming folks!

I just germed some "Bloody Skunk" beans from Hawaii that have been in the fridge since the early 90's. I started 10 and soaked them using my tried and true lucky shot glass and everything. None of them sprouted. They swelled up a little and even a couple of them split but no tails.

I started another 10 and moved them from on top of my fridge to the veg room which is a bit warmer (upper 80's) using the same method. First week nothing and then at the end of the 10 day I see one sprout and day 15 one more little tail. 2 sprouts out of 20, not great odds I tell ya. I now have two little Bloody Skunk plants that are looking real good.

Heat and a longer germ period than standard is the trick. I used no Superthrive at all in the soak dilution.

A little heat can dramatically help at some times with old seeds. I usually germ seeds at approx. 85-88 degrees F. Try putting the seeds on a heat pad, the Sunbeam brand from Walmart available in the pharmacy area works great and is about $15. I have germed 10+ year skunk1 with this method, it is quite different from 25 years, but older than most people get seeds to pop. Hope all goes well.
I agree and would even go to 90 on those. might get lucky and get the oldschool roadkill skunk. :yoinks: Bunch of other goodies could be ther also, good luck....ndn

Hopefully they will pop, but it's not looking to well. I'm hoping for the best, but i got more of them. I'll make sure to germ them all at once when i come back. I'm sure we can find a few in the bunch of seeds i still have. Good luck to you Sinfuldream and hope they still pop.
Take care

Well...here's hoping that the 30ish-year-old Columbian Gold and Mauie Wauie seeds I'll be germinating today all crack and sprout and grow into big healthy girls that will produce the intoxicating smoke that will surely take me back to the good ol' days.

I would love to find some Panama Red for my next grow. Anyone have any ideas?

I found a thread specifically discussing germinating older seeds you might want to check out. They discuss the problems with older seeds and things that might help them germinate.

Nice link Ambre, i'll be trying some of the method uses on the same batch of seeds down the road. Ill make sure to report on the method used. Thanks for the info and help. Know lets hope these seeds finally pop.
Take care

Glad to help - I'd like to see some of the old varieties around again. I remember the trippy & visual effects I got some of the stuff I used to pay $10 an ounce for that I just haven't been able to get with today's herb. I'd like to get some of the old stuff just to try it again!

Let me know how it comes out and if any of the ideas there work. I'm thinking I saw another thread about starting old seeds maybe on Overgrow, but their website was too busy to run a search last night. I'll try again today.

I remember the old $10 "lids" we used to buy in Santa Barbara, California, in the late 60's and early 70's when I was a full-blown hippie. They were just a baggy full of "shake"...what we used to call a “four-finger-lid”. The baggy had four-fingers (fingers held tight together and measured horizontally to the bag) of pot in it, which consisted of tons of seeds and stems (twigs and branches is more like it!) But it was wonderful smoke!

And you're correct, Ambre...it was trippier and just had a sillier effect on people. That seems to be a thing of the past now with all the specialization of breeds and whatnot. I say it’s a shame that the old genetics have not been drawing the attention of the breeders the way they used to. Everyone wants to make a strain that does this particular thing or that particular thing, but the over-all "HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" factor seems to elude these genetic whizzes.
Pot simply isn't as much fun to smoke as it was then.

But...having said that, I am confident I will eventually get my hands on some original Panama Red beans, as well as some of the other major popular strains of yesteryear. I will (hopefully) grow a few delicious females, keep them for mothers, and start giving away clones to help get the strain back on its feet at least in my own area.

I think a collection of interested parties is in order here. If only ten people who were proficient growers took a great interest in seeing the old strains make a come-back, it wouldn’t take any time at all (perhaps five years) to make those uncommon strains common and plentiful again. We could also develop proven methods for bringing back to life the old seeds that have been laying around for all these years.
This would have a direct, positive effect on the growing community as a whole. Successful new techniques for sprouting old beans that were thought to be useless, may indeed become viable plants after all and bring the world a bit more pleasure.

Perhaps I’ll create a comfy little Website, and then invite whoever is interested in becoming a part of something really special to join and become a part of this little community of like-minded folks working to make pot smoking a real pleasure again.

Or am I just so stoned that I think that’s a great idea. Hmmm…

If anyone has these old seeds give em a shot before they get too old.
I know BG has many more he will Germ once the B.S. is finished. Anyone with these old seeds should try them or give to someone to try.

4 finger lids I forgot about that. Back when a Dime ment 10 dollars.

I agree MD good call. Getting these beans was indeed an Honor but I am not mabe the best person to be trying to sprout such treasures.
:pointlaug:

Oh and just to over state it Thai Stick in the late 70's ( When i had it ) Was the BEST HIGH EVER. Oh that Thai! And Guess Who's the Thai Master?
Hehehee the same guy what sent me these beans along with his Godzuki.
:woohoo:

We fell into a damn nice group of people, I'm sure that when the Old School Beans begin sprouting these same folks will pass the Love along to the dirty faced masses. :joint:

Wallyduck is doing a C99 x Panama Red check with Wally.

Hawaiian 1982-83 was good too. Skunky tastey Green Room Fresh.
And some of that Mexican shake was killer....... If I only had kept the seeds!!!!!!!!!!!! I did but you know.....

Best of Luck to all who have the Magic Vintage Beans!

Dave-

Have you checked Wally Duck for PR? I know he's got pure PR growing and has been doing crosses with his C99 using it.

Hi Sin and Ambre...

I can't even begin to describe how my heart (and another part of my anatomy) acted when I read that Wally Duck might have some real live PR beans. Schwiiing!!! (sorry ladies)

I will definitely contact him and see if I can get my hands on a few somehow. Now that I am totally disabled and confined to my home— actually to my grow room for 20 hours of every day— I have all the time in the world on my hands to devote to some very specialized activities. I already own all the quality professional equipment I could possibly need or want, and I have a few crops under my belt. I could really devote the time and attention needed to make a project like growing old PR seeds or old Columbian Gold seeds a roaring success.

I will also create some special grow space, such as a big new shed in my back garden, to be used strictly for learning (through trial and error and with a lot of help from the forums) how to gently coax old, old seeds into sprouting. Then I will keep a single, super-healthy mother of each strain to take cuttings from and to produce viable seed from until I have re-introduced many of the classic old strains back into the smoking community where I live.

I think the prospect of having some of the “old school” strains readily available again is awesome! And I can’t wait for the moment some special guest comes to visit and I am able to offer a smorgasbord of truly legendary strains for their pleasure!
