Vert PL-L 550Wflo/110Wveg NGB,Drbud cab

same here, its not as easy to be a grower in an apartment, try being a drummer too..... cant catch a break lol.

my cab ended up costing me around the 400 mark as well. i thought the whole time that i could make it cheaper than the model i did it after, and i did, but mine is w/o a feature or two and "unfinished"... as i was antsy to be done so i left the bottom uncovered and the outside unpainted... oh well. no one goes into my room anyway. if someone forced them selves in, they must already know something haha.:dunno:

off to watch the plants grow!:watchplant:

chad

isn't it the worst... my neighbor comes down everytime i throw the saw on... GRRR

so now i just blast music and tell him to fuck off. it's taking forever to get the cab together. luckily wiring makes no sound haha.

love your cab! and gl:dance013:

Very nice Tilt! How do you like the mini treepots? those are the 3x3x8's right? I am just in the process of switching over to them. Do you put anything at the bottom to lessen the huge hole? My first few I have just been packing the first scoop of dirt tight and so far that seems to be working OK.

I have often thought of running verticals like this, but have wondered if it is worth it since there is some loss of footprint (in my case) and my cab is very small. Please keep posting occasional plant dry-weights, as that is a great way for me to compare your vert setup with my overhead cfl's. Since we are running the same pots it would be very helpful to me.

*edit to add* I use a water only, amended recycled soil mix in similar size pots and it works great. I expect it to work just as well in the mt38's, but that is as of yet unseen. I've been logging results and tweaking since September. If you want me to post the recipe just say so.

I love the mt38s. Im going to poke small holes in the sides and try to get more air in the root zone. I do cut a square of filter material to cover the hole on the bottom. I will post up some results from this cab You can check out my prototype cab here http://https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=174331 in the meantime. I harvest every week some weeks are better than others. Ive been lazy lately on keeping records and with the grow in general. I will tighten it up so you guys can see if this is something for you. I would like to see your soil recipe

Thanks for answering my questions tilt. I was thinking a patch of aluminum bug screen at the bottom and I will try that the new ones I pot up.

as for the soil, first are a few disclaimers. The pots I am switching from are 12 oz (net wt) coffee bags. I fill them up about 8" which is probably 1/2 to 1 cup more soil that the mt38's. I have been messing with this soil recipie enough though to know that I can certainly over nute, and unless I veg for more than a couple of weeks I am nowhere near rootbound, so in theroy this is going to be fine in the mt38's. Also, it is hard for me to know what is left in my soil or yours from the standpoint of residual nutes and that may change things some. The soil I recycled I believe to have been fully depleted but that may not be the case. For you I would recommend doing a good flush on your existing soil before mixing this up to get it in the realm of what I started with. also, I have a small storage space for my soil, so I keep coco bricks and hydrate one at a time to cut my soil. this also allows me to tweek things for individual plants but also works as a soil conditioner and holds some moisture.

(Original mix was mg organic + pro mix organic and bone, blood, garden lime, epsom, pearlite and between 25% - 50% coco. Soil depleated fairly early on all outside plants. This is soil from last years veggi garden. No chemical ferts were added.)
Mix used soil at 5 gal soil, 2 gal castings, 1 2/3 cup epsoma bio started plus w/ mycos, 1/4 cup epsoma kelp meal, 1/4 cup epsoma garden lime. Also add 1/2 cup epsom salts unless you water with a micro-nute supliment.

Then at potting time I cut this mix 50/50 with coco (or peat) add 1 tsp bone mixed into the soil.

The soil is balanced for veg essentially with minimal P, the bone kicks in about 4 or 5 weeks into flower and gives a nice boost in weight... that is the part I have been mostly working on. the above works very well with every plant I run and I am now seeing how far I can push it with the bone and percentage of mix to coco. Longer flowering plants now get the mix at 2 parts mix to 1 part coco, and 1.5-2 tsp bone. With that much bone they finish dark green but the calyxis are fat. I cram 20 or so plants into my 19x14 footprint with 6@ 42w CFL's overhead and I have been averaging about the same as you when I use this mix lighting mostly the tops, though my lights are staggered with 3 on the right down about 4 inches so the girls close to finishing get the center of the cabinet where they get good side lighting from the right and top from the left. You are roughly 2x the cab and 2x the light and based on your use of light you should be kicking my ass, so hopefully this mix will help with that!! My biggest harvest to date from a flowered clone (no veg) is 8.3g, but that is an 11 week plant. Most come out in the 4 or 5g range with some in the 3's and the occasional one larger. I "budget" myself at an 1/8th per plant and my goals are the 5-6g range. I have found even a few days of veg makes a huge difference. Just giving them a chance to drop a few roots before the flip works wonders.

As for the eposm salt thing, I was seeing what I thought was mg def after my soil was sitting for awhile but it ended up being K and the kelp took care of that, so I will be going back to using the epsom salt next batch. For now I am using microblast in my water at 1/2tsp per gal and 1 drop superthrive per gal in tap water that is set out for 24 hrs to declorinate. My tap is hq though so that may not work with yours... I'm sure you have your water figured out!!

Attached is a pic of the 8.3 g plant (Rocklock) and a group shot of Apollo 11's that I shot for another thread to show the coffee bags next to an mt38.

Hope this helps.

Jed

One other thing... as for the blumats, I use them on my moms, and they would be a PITA with 50 plants. Also, the roots just wrap around the spikes and after a month or two the soil never even gets moist, so for amended soil I don't think they would work well and with 50 tubes flying around it would be a jungleish nightmare. With the coffe bags, if you look closely at the photo, you will see that drain holes on some are an inch or so up the bag. this actually worked very well by maintaining a small res at the bottom of the bag. This never resulted in rootrot or any other issue. The fact that I never have heavy root mas at the bottom of the bags and the actual amount of standing is so little that it wicks up the bag in a few hours and just further saturates the soil. I did this to cut down on watering needs a bit and it worked. After a few rounds with the mt38's I may try to seal the bottom and do something similar.

Currently with my cab temps and pot size. I only have to water once a week. I will be adding more pumice or perlite to my mix to increase root aeration and get my watering schedule down to every 5 days. It takes about an hour and a half to pull everything out inspect clean and water then replace. It also looks like I vegged my C+ clones to tall. I will pop some more c+ seeds and see if I can find a better pheno in my remaining seeds.

I have been noticing these pots take water better than the coffee bags. the rigid sides and tapered design makes watering easier so far. Hopefully your experience will prove true for me as well. once a week is a great watering schedule. Good luck on the c+ that is one I have always wanted to try.

Zen Trikester,

"One other thing... as for the blumats, I use them on my moms, and they would be a PITA with 50 plants. Also, the roots just wrap around the spikes and after a month or two the soil never even gets moist,"

Are you using the tropf blumats with the dripper or the blumat jr. that emits water from the carrot?

Yeah, the drip from the carrot variety, but there was no "jr" on the packaging. Just moved 6 moms to new digs a couple days ago and discovered that this was happening.

Im thinking I might add a 150w hps in the top of the flower chamber. I have plenty of wiggle room left on my temps in the cab. I have a ballast and lamps are cheap enough. $30.00 out of pocket to hook it up. Cant decide horizontal or vertical either. Ive been checking out the 150w club for ideas. I can definitely run it during the winter, summer might be to much heat though.
