Here is a picture of a NSA data collection center built for the soul purpose of spying.

Why The 2,776 NSA Violations Are No Big Deal
Thanks to more documents leaked by Edward Snowden, this time to the Washington Post, we learned last week that a secret May 2012 internal audit by the NSA revealed 2,776 incidents of “unauthorized” collection of information on American citizens over the previous 12 months. They are routinely breaking their own rules and covering it up.

The Post article quotes an NSA spokesman assuring the paper that the NSA attempts to identify such problems “at the earliest possible moment.” But what happened to all those communications intercepted improperly in the meantime? The answer is, they were logged and stored anyway.

We also learned that the NSA routinely intercepts information from Americans while actually targeting foreigners, and that this is not even considered a violation. These intercepts are not deleted once discovered, even though they violate the government’s own standards. As the article reports, “once added to its databases, absent other restrictions, the communications of Americans may be searched freely.”

The Post article quotes an NSA official explaining that the thousands of unauthorized communications intercepts yearly are relatively insignificant. “You can look at it as a percentage of our total activity that occurs each day. You look at a number in absolute terms that looks big, and when you look at it in relative terms, it looks a little different.”

So although the numbers of Americans who have had their information intercepted in violation of NSA’s own rules seems large, it is actually miniscule compared to the huge volume of our communications they intercept in total!

Though it made for a sensational headline last week, the fact is these 2,776 “violations” over the course of one year are completely irrelevant. The millions and millions of “authorized” intercepts of our communications are all illegal -- except for the very few carried out in pursuit of a validly-issued search warrant in accordance with the Fourth Amendment. That is the real story. Drawing our attention to the violations unfortunately sends the message that the “authorized” spying on us is nothing to be concerned about.

When information about the massive NSA domestic spying program began leaking earlier in the summer, Deputy Attorney General James Cole assured us of the many levels of safeguards to prevent the unauthorized collection, storage, and distribution of our communications. He promised to explain the NSA’s record “in as transparent a way as we possibly can.”

Yet two months later we only discover from more leaked documents the thousands of times communications were intercepted in violation of their own standards! It is hardly reassuring, therefore, when they promise us they will be more forthcoming in the future. No one believes them because they have lied and covered up continuously. The only time any light at all is shone on these criminal acts by the government is when a whistleblower comes forth with new and ever more disturbing information.

Americans are increasingly concerned over these violations of their privacy. Calls for reform grow. However, whenever Washington finds itself in a scandal, the government responds by naming a government panel made up of current and former government employees to investigate any mistakes the government might have made. The recommendations invariably are that even more government employees must be hired to provide an additional layer or two of oversight. That is supposed to reassure us that reforms have been made, while in fact it is just insiders covering up for those who have hired them to investigate.

Let us hope the American people will decide that such trickery is no longer acceptable. It is time to take a very serious look at the activities of the US intelligence community. The first step would be a dramatic reduction in appropriations to force a focus on those real, not imagined, threats to our national security. We should not be considered the enemy.

What argument??? Damn dude

that we should all give as little of a shit about our surroundings as you do.
that this is all going to happen and we should remain as blissfully ignorant as possible.

that seems to be your point.

bentom, do you really think that picture is of a secret nsa spying facility?

people at Disney came up with a better design of a secret facility when they shot that movie with The Rock something about Witch Mountain...

oh well, sucks for the nsa to not have disney engineers.

yes. the fact that you knew about being spied on yet don't care,is evidence that you will not take any argument put forth by us seriously.

I hope you post some supporting evidence that we are not being spied on, considering they admitted it and lied about it in a hearing.their only justificationis that its for our safety yet they fund al-queada and have a had a long history of funding them. its public record.

The NSA Is Building the Country’s Biggest Spy Center (Watch What You Say)

It needs that capacity because, according to a recent report by Cisco, global Internet traffic will quadruple from 2010 to 2015, reaching 966 exabytes per year. (A million exabytes equal a yottabyte.) In terms of scale, Eric Schmidt, Google’s former CEO, once estimated that the total of all human knowledge created from the dawn of man to 2003 totaled 5 exabytes. And the data flow shows no sign of slowing. In 2011 more than 2 billion of the world’s 6.9 billion people were connected to the Internet. By 2015, market research firm IDC estimates, there will be 2.7 billion users. Thus, the NSA’s need for a 1-million-square-foot data storehouse. Should the agency ever fill the Utah center with a yottabyte of information, it would be equal to about 500 quintillion (500,000,000,000,000,000,000) pages of text.

heck, it comes with the territory... there's no way to not be able to have someone (whether government or not) know of your activities on-line if they so desire and are capable of accomplishing it. it is the nature of the best; it is like going out to the street and expecting no one to see you walking around.

we were told this since the start of the internet, can hardly see where is the "news" part of the leaks so far...

Here is the NEWS. Google doing it, in exchange for giving me free e-mail and other services. Apple doing it, in exchange for letting me be part of the cool club; these are examples of FREE TRADE and FREEDOM of CONTRACT.

The US Government doing it SECRETLY, without my consent, and in violation of CONSTITUTIONAL protections is NEWS, and a declaration of war against all of us. Fuck the war on drugs, they've moved on to the War on Individuals.

Thankfully you're white, rich and have a dad who worked for the NSA.

I'd be paranoid if the above didn't apply.

Exclusive: FL Sheriff Arrested, Charged With Felony & Suspended For Protecting Citizens’ 2nd Amendment Rights

Liberty County, FL-

In a developing story, Sheriff Nick Finch was arrested, charged with a felony and suspended without pay for supporting a citizen’s 2nd Amendment rights. It’s not a story you hear every day. It’s certainly not a story you’d expect out of a county named Liberty.

The events began when Floyd Eugene Parrish, a Florida resident, was arrested and detained by one of Finch’s deputies for carrying a firearm without a permit on March 8th, 2013. In the state of Florida, this lands you a 3rd degree felony charge. Finch released Parrish because, in his assessment, Parrish was not a violent criminal and was acting innocuously. Finch called the clerk and told her not to draw up arrest documents until he was there to assess the situation. Note, Parrish had not been officially booked into jail- only detained.Finch

The arresting deputy had multiple complaints for overstepping his authority from citizens over the past several months before Parrish’s arrest. A month after Parrish was released from jail Sheriff Finch decided he needed to launch an internal investigation against the deputy due to multiple complaints and phone calls he had received. Once the deputy found out that an investigation was going to be launched against him, he resigned to keep the investigation from occurring. On May 1st, the deputy, who was no longer employed in the state of Florida, filed a complaint against Finch for the Parrish arrest that took place more 2 months beforehand.

Rick Scott, Florida governor, stepped in and had Finch arrested. Governor Scott then appointed a new sheriff. Finch says he did not vote for the Governor. “I’m not a republican, or a democrat. Just a man who believes in the Constitution,” says Finch. A rally was recently organized by Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Adrian Wyllie. Governor Scott was invited to speak, but was a no show.

Below is our exclusive interview with Sheriff Finch:

hi bombadil.360,

just cause someone is not satisfied with the official bull shit report about 9/11 which 3 out of 5 of the investigating 911 commissioners have them selves described as incomplete and misleading. is no reason to doubt someones judgment. in fact 99% of the 911 truth movement just think the gov version of the event is full of massive holes and bs. what actually happened is not claimed to be known by most, even if there are many theories and speculation, but what is clear is that the official story is not holding water and is being called in to question from pretty much every scientific point of view you can think of. thousands of architects, engineers and pilots say the official version of events is impossible. demolition experts, security experts, defense experts, professors of physics, scientists, explosives experts, engineers, steel frame construction specialists. they all say, that the official version of events is not possible.

whether it's the ACE level piloting abilities of the pentagon pilot, (who wasn't capable of getting a Cessna off the ground), or the apparent crumbly nature of the world trade center towers, or the indestructible passports, that survived an explosion hot enough to apparently melt the steel frames of the building as well as vaporizing most of the plane and a huge part of the towers. but those passports miraculously are found with barely a singe mark on them. there is no body parts bigger then an inch to be found after the event, but these passports for some reason got magicked out of their pockets or luggage to land on top of the whole pile of dust. so it can be found within hours of the towers falling, lol.

or how about the sleepy controllers in charge of the pentagons automatic air defense systems? let alone the national air defense system being breached 4x inside a few hours, for hours on end. with none of the normal procedures being followed regarding hijacked planes or planes that leave their flight path, like they did on every other day when a plane left his course or stopped communicating, (911 planes did both). they practice intercepting hijacked planes all the time. why didn't they scramble jets as they did on every other occasion inside of minutes of loss of communication or unexplained change of flight path.

we could go on and on, but this shouldn't be about 911 in the end. this is about what Snowden has made public to the masses which most of us knew about already, even if not to what extent this is supposedly going on or how much of a wild west those data collection programs have become with all these thousands of cases where even their lax rules were not followed.

to be honest i'd be very surprised if Snowden was anything other then what he claims to be. he is confirming what a lot of folks have suspected. in fact others leaked some of this stuff before him, they just didnt give their names so they stayed hidden, making their statements less powerful then Eds, who even outed the nsa's own power point presentation for employees to learn about these spying techniques. can't ask for more then that from a whistle blower.

One word: keywording.
Nowhere to my knowledge has every form of telecomunication been actively monitered, normally information is recorded and if deemed important enough listed to by an operator. Now adays there is too soposedly much internet traffic to all be recorded according to the publicly available information I have seen, but the new data center in ut might change that. You have clearly not been following this case nor have you read up on the history I mentioned or your asking me my opinion on so many things as an excuse to add cute simeys?:tiphat:

That is bull, the internet doesnt need to be as centralized as it was designed to be, if it was more decentralized It would be less easy to do what we are talking about. Telecommunications are not the street they are private communications, from my personal view and from my understanding of the legal precedent. The idea that telecommunications are equal to something that is occuring in a completly public area, like the street, is new to me and I'd like to hear the basis of that argument.

You know my point. I don't have one. I enjoy the entertainment...enjoy the internet patriotism...enjoy the spins. Throw out a few off the cuff posts...and do my part...to perpetuate the thread. Wouldn't be so fun without making myself a target.

In between...I'm trimming some fresh flowers...watching the little league world series. About as 'merican as I get.

Living in a nation of consumers...the saving grace may be...that the corporations need their customers. It will not do...to lock everyone away. It is a reservation...the tribe won't leave it...but as individuals...we can find solace. I am selfish and apathetic to the point...where if peeps can't work that out for themselves....fuck'em...I have my own to look after. The "guilt ridden" was total fabrication

Jericho you say you don't have a side etc, but you don't come across as not having a side, if you really didnt care why would you even post in this thread? it's clear that you don't like some of what you are reading here. but you never specify this and this is wrong or misrepresented or what ever. it's always vague generalizations or implications about how nuts it is to think anything less then the best about our respective governments. you tend to ridicule those of us who take this seriously, so it's hard to believe you when you say you have no side. i think the truth is that you are loath to give up the beliefs in the ultimate good of government that was pumped into all of us during our education.

i would suggest watching Oliver Stone's History of the United States for a start. things we were brought up believing as ultimate truths turn out to have been quite different if you read the history written by the losing side. i know you hate when i talk about history, but without it you have no terms of reference for whats going on today.

you can look at the Boston police pics and say oh they were just doing their job. or you can really think about it. think what it means. for 1 person they abolished the constitution and bill of rights in a whole area. everyone was assumed to be a criminal. 1 person and they could just stroll into your house screaming at you to get your hands up and get out. 1 wanted person and all of a sudden the rule of law is abolished. that was a clear sign of the times, clear as day for anyone with eyes to see. if we don't push back real hard this kind of behavior will become the norm, just like the aggression displayed by most cops most of the time for no reason. or just like the swat teams killing dogs for no reason, or just like the swat team being used to serve warrants on none violent so called offenders. all this crazy shit the drug war gave us is gonna be like nothing compared to what the war on terror is gonna allow them. just waiting for the first reports about finger up the ass searches for people who wish to travel, lol.

G...if you think for a second...that I've ever believed in our government...or that I take sides with it...you've misjudged me. Though I have served in the Corps..and had a career in the Forest Service...all I can say is: at least I'm well rounded...and seen both sides of the coin...unlike many. The government is so fucked up...it's hard to imagine...how it manages to float. Never been very patriotic though...certainly don't rah rah rah the military. Flag waving turns me off...nationalism turns me off....USA USA USA turns me off

What amuses me...is all this passing of information as word. It's so easy to manipulate people with propaganda...and this is well acknowledged by many in here....but at the same time...the same people are responding with stuff...they have no way of really knowing. You can read until your eyes fall out...go for it...but I'd believe less than a 1/4 of it.

Fucking Oliver Stone......there you go. The gospel of Oliver Stone. A man who makes his living selling movies. Hollywood Homes...a bit of truth...with a bit of fantasy...the bases for a profit. So if he made a documentary..probably fun to watch...but I'd for sure take it with a grain of salt.

In the 1980s...we raged in the hardcore scene...going to shows...fucking getting beat up by cops and fascist...fighting against Reagan and the police state...guess what??? I'm older and R is dead...the police state still exists..as it always has here...and i hear the exact same rhetoric about demolishing it. I'm way past that now. ...as I know...it will not be going away. A new generation can take over...take its beating...and that won't be new either.

History is unoriginal. It hasn't had a new concept in 1000's of yrs. Same shit...over and over and over and over...different faces..different regimes...but the exact same process.

I've been beat up...I've gone to jail...and I'm still here...but have learned to prosper in the environment (not really that difficult to do..in this country)

The country is run on fear. It poisons its own people with the agriculture system...crashes planes into its own buildings...and totally profits off the farming of its peoples. Voting is not going to save it..better get used to that concept. People are not going to suddenly wake up and go..."o hey this isn't what they said it was..this system of ours". They are trained on the trough...and will continue to feed out of it.

I have a side. It's Jericho's side. I don't need Snowden showing me the light...Stone...you or Bentom. You're a decent dude..it seems..and I'm pretty straight up...and I am not denying the truths of some of what is posted here...but again...nothing new...nothing shocking...been around the block many Xs now. 10...20...30 yrs from now...same shit will be going down...same kinds of peeps will be trying to enlighten the rest of us...maybe...

after a while you learn to remember what's really important in life...Health and Happiness. So far...I still have mine...and that's my blessing. This other shit...noise. You think someone is coming to take it from me???.....well that's a possibility...life is chaos. I don't crap my pants over it

* highly recommend reading Culture of Make Believe

I'm guessing you are white, male and probally middle class. The us has a 15% poverty rate, the most total prisoners in the world(more than china, russia or india), according to a recent pew study almost 10% of blacks are under judcial supervision or locked in jail, I'm aware of areas that have unemployment rate of over 40%, we almost lost detroit, rural areas are in decline due to a decrease in agriculture employment and the outsourcing of industry, those living in cities are faced with gentrification, the leases on many fedral housing projects are running out and it seems no one cares even though many of these families cannot afford a market rent............

good reply JM, seems i misinterpreted some of your more cryptic posts.

about stones documentary, it's actually using archived recordings of the people it's talking about and official recently unclassified documents gained through foia requests. while i agree that you can't take his version as gospel either it does make one think when you compare it with what you learn in school and what is considered to be the truth by the main stream.

in the end spreading this information, now that it's coming to a wider audience is a good step. the more people that question, the better. there is nothing that will wake people up better then seeing their pres telling 1 lie after another and being exposed lie for lie. as greenwald publishes another nsa document contradicting the latest lie. seems to me this situation is new in that way. it's getting harder and harder to keep people misinformed by mainstream propaganda. people can find the other side of the story nowadays.

yes history does repeat it's self thats why it's so interesting, historically speaking a lot of the things the US empire is doing now are exactly the same as what the romans were doing towards the end of their empire. time will tell what will be next, we are living in interesting times that's for sure.
