Tribulations of an Absentee Gardener

Sorry to hear that. I had the same thing happen after 3 weeks, but with an algae plugged line. I managed to recover one very stunted plant though.

I experienced the same malady on several occasions when I was top feeding through emitters. I always left with three emitters to each pot in hopes at least one would still be operational when I returned.

Glad ya`ll made it back safe and sound Bro.....Hope all`s well with the Closet Queen and the smaller plant underneath.....I wanted to ask about your bulbs 1 more time.....I`m swappin out mine and the 25 watt tubes are frosted 3500 lumens each and 9 bucks and change...….are yours frosted or clear ?.....and if clear where can I source em ?.....

There`s a clear tube that`s 41 watts and 5100 lumens but it`s like 5500-6500 kelvin , and it`s 23 bucks plus shipping , so I`m doin the frugal Hmmmmmm thang before spending buncha cash for headies and no return on investment except between my ears when the frosted bulbs might do close to the same job for 1/3 the price …..anyways.....

Hope Harvey`s good to yas Dink....

HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN.......

Twenty three days orphaned and the plant survived but not unscathed. As mentioned earlier, my environment is not climate controlled. Looking for cool weather while I was gone, I retarded the speed of the exhaust fan significantly in order to maintain a little heat. Never able to out guess Mother Nature, it was unseasonably warm and wetter than monsoon season when I was in the Nam! Results: BUD ROT!! I lost five fine colas. Fortunately, it seemed to be confined to that small central area.

It doesn’t appear to be prime time for harvest quite yet but the bud rot has made me very apprehensive. This is the first occurrence for me. These are super tight buds and the unusually high humidity is prompting me to harvest a bit early. I clipped the top 2 colas last night:

I’ve always been curious if the bottom limbs could be coaxed into production with adequate light or if they’re just a lost cause. I harvested the very lowest stem and was happy with the results. Simple top lighting has always reaped no results in this area.

The buds from this limb were admittedly small but yet nice and tight and a viable small harvest.

Lot to do and not sure if I’ll continue with harvest today or not.

To be continued.......

My tubes are only 18 watts each. Definitely go with clear tubes. I did some comparison on some SIL’s with and without the diffused domes. Lux readings at 9” was almost 40% better without and I’ll bet the tubes would follow suit. I purchased 20 tubes from amazon for $100. I’ll see if I can’t find the link and post it a bit later.

Has anyone tried pool algaecide in a res?

I'm on a well and use a drop of chlorine in my res (6.5% not the pool stuff at 12%) at change up.

I would only use it when I'm away, then clean it out once I return.

Here’s a link to the bulbs I bought. The 3000k have gone up from $99 to $125 in about 3 months. RIDICULOUS!! (I blame it on president John don drumpf’s imposed tariffs?) that figures out to almost 35 cents per watt. The 4000k are a bit less at just under 32 cents. These are in quantities of 20. They’re a bit less than half the wattage of the ones you found but cost only about 1/4 the price. They can be wired single ended and are ballast bypass which makes life a bit simpler. I mounted 21 bulbs in a space of a little less 40” and could have compacted them a bit tighter.

"This item isn't available in Canada" lol

Just get a bunch of LED strips and a driver.

They're cheaper and don't need to be in a tube.

I just built one in a water-filled tube.

I cranked it 4 times past the recommended current and got over 65 Watts out of an 11" strip.

You can run them at lower current and air cool them with no cover or water.

TRAGIC DISCOVERY.....

The wife and I often enjoy our morning coffee from the deck. Many mornings we’re visited by a small herd of deer, grazing in the field or foraging for acorns under the oaks.

We were saddened to find this:

Evidently, they locked horns during combat and fell into the lake and drowned. It was an unpleasant task dragging them out and burying them but I didn’t have much of a choice if I didn’t want the water fouled.

That's sad and strange.

At least you got them out and buried before they started to rot.

I don't think I could handle that smell.

That happens a lot more than you'd think. Looks like you have a tractor so it shouldn't have been too hard of a chore to bury them. Just a pain in the posterior.

The tractor definitely made the task a lot simpler. For some reason my psyche insisted that I owed them a separate burial. I took care to only detach the tangled prongs that were holding them together.

There was little odor when I first pulled them out but by the time I got them separated they were reeking and drawing swarms of flies. Most unpleasant!

You’re right, CannaRed, we often loose sight of how ruthless nature can be. It’s rutting season down here. Amazing what the male species will go through for sexual favors!

NO NO NO NO I DONT SMOKE IT NO MO’.....

I got really stoned from smoking once. It lasted for 10 years! The decade of the 70’s was one continuous high; at least three joints of that now infamous Columbian Gold every day!

I still have fabulous memories of that era but when I rediscovered cannabis for medicinal purposes in 2015, I found toking just wasn’t where it was at for me.

Experimentation with edibles was about as rewarding as kissing your sister.

I used Psychedelic Sam’s tincture method for a while with modest results. Irrelevant of what strain I used, there was little characteristic diversity in the end results. I eventually morphed his method into what I dubbed my “orange dragon” procedure in an attempt to retain terpene content. This was a definite improvement in depth of effects but still short of what I was seeking.

I failed miserably in my attempts to infuse oils and glycerines. I rendered more good pot useless with my Magic Butter Machine than I care to think about! Just snakebit I guess.

In my mind, I’m of the opinion that the more we manipulate this beautiful plant through extractions and infusions, the more of the goodness we loose.

At this point, I started simply decarbing, grinding, packing a gelcap and adding a few drops of MCT oil and occasionally some terpene additives. Great improvement! I could recognize multifaceted effects and could discern distinct strain characteristics now.

My K.I.S.S. philosophy in gardening has now infiltrated my modality of ingestion. I got lazy one day and just moistened my finger tip, dipped it into the finely ground flower and licked it off (this is a much more pleasurable experience if you do it prior picking your nose or scratching your ass!) Wholly $hit what a difference this made! Don’t know how to explain it anatomically but this is the cats meow for me!! I recognize a gentle onset in 30-45 minutes with a linear ramp up to an enjoyable peak at about the 5 hour mark and often pleasant residual effects as much as 8 hours later! Remarkable how well the strain characteristics shine through. Beautiful, long lasting experience!!

The Ardent is one of my few extravagances. It’s the most overpriced, poorest quality piece of equipment in my apothecary cabinet that I’ll never be without!

Do a good decarb, run it through the cheap mr coffee grinder, swallow a tad and enjoy the ride. Just can’t get much simpler than that!

I dried the small buds from the lowest limb for a couple of days and cooked them in the Ardent tonight. Looking forward to giving it a go in the morning.

Sounds a lot like chewing on a Cob.

Sweet sue brought the cob method to 420 several months ago when I hung out there often and I was fascinated. I gave it a try but all my material was being stored in the freezer and mine failed to ferment. Tangwena later confided in me that freezing killed the bacteria that was essential in the fermentation process so I was busted.

Everyone was raving over the process and how effective it was. I think they were just chewing and swallowing the juice.

Have you had any experience with it?

No. But I made some last year. I'll have to try them someday. lol

I have to say, when I open them up, they're the best smelling weed ever.

well, harvest’s done. No pretty pix or weights available. I find trimming bud an unpleasant task. I threw in the towel far short of a complete harvest. The buds I did trim filled 3 large brown paper bags about 1/3 full and still discarded an insane amount. I’ll never use what I trimmed and as much as I dislike the chore I’m not sure why I continued so long.

Now that I’ve gotten her big sister out of the way, Miss Panama seems to be getting a bit bushier. If I hadn’t malformed her by tying her down to keep her out of the way she would be close to the height of the Honduras but doesn’t seem to have quite the mass at the same stage of growth.

Until recently, every time I looked at her I was reminded of a tall skinny red headed girl I went to school with so many years ago. Kids can be cruel and they dubbed her “Alice the Goon”. I felt bad for her and befriended her at any opportunity I could. She showed her gratitude; OFTEN! After I fulfilled my obligation to uncle sams mean green machine and returned to my hometown, I ran into her several years after graduation. She had married arguably the most successful injury lawyer in the state and was a most attractive young lady! Her build was still slim but with the addition of the new store bought breasts it became less important. She was definitely a sweet piece of arm candy now. The type of chic that can induce a wet dream, you know what I mean?!? Perhaps Miss Panama will blossom into a beauty, also!

The vertical grow experimentation has been an enjoyable diversion but it’s far divorced from my initial goal. My great uncle Rufus Ray used to proclaim “So many women and so little time” and I have a similar feeling toward cannabis. (Uncle Rufus Ray was quite a character and I’ll have to share more about him!) There’s probably well over 1000 different strains and I’m on a mission to experience as many as I can before they nail the coffin lid shut!

I still hope to establish a viable single cabinet perpetual grow that will accommodate 8 plants in my meager footprint and bring them to completion as rapidly as possible. I hope to begin some experimentation with size, shape and material for some custom rag bags.

Keeping the plants a manageable size is still going to be a challenge. I think some radical pruning during veg and maybe shortly after may be an option but with my constant absenteeism I couldn’t always count on being there at the opportune time. Growing autos with a 12/12 from seed light schedule may be a possibility.

So many questions and so little time.........
