TOTALLY RANDOM POST II

It's fairly quiet in the woods here right now. I think they're conspiring as I type.

I've got logs, western white cedar, they're beautiful except for their being dead, milled smooth, shellacked and then stacked like utility poles, even I hate us every once in awhile.......

my ex-father-in-law was a real pig of a human being, when speaking to any dark skinned men he'd preface his statement with "Hey! Jose!!!" to get their attention. "Excuse me." was out of his vernacular.......

When I worked briefly for the U.S. Forest Circus in S.E. Alaska in the later 70s, in the Islands, and we were in a bog area where we needed to access specific trees we were felling, we had mini-mills, and would drop yellow and red cedar, take slabs of 2"-3"+ thick, rough-cut planks, and lay them in the bog to walk on, to gain our access.

I wish I had 1/10th of what we laid on the ground and left there..

Amazon.com's source for Gnatrol won't/can't ship to Alaska!! WTF????!!!!!

Nematodes require overnight freight, which kills us up here. And Gnatrol has gone granular (used to be B.t.i. liquid), and can't be shipped here!!!

I may have to move... or find a surrogate who can receive Gnatrol for me in the Lower-48, and relay it to me less expensively!!!

I thought life was supposed to get -easier- as we entered our Golden years!!!!

Have you tried crushed Mosquito Dunks? It cleared up my gnat infestation after one application.

Never heard of it. Unfamiliar with the product and concept. Please elaborate.

My biggest issue currently is the thrips; both critters are a nuisance when it comes to flying up your nose, down your throat, or buzzing in your face at inopportune moments, but the thrips -can- cause more direct and discernible damage to the plants.

Thanks in advance.

Another member here had suggested using unscented dryer sheets as a barrier-type repellent for FG. But I want to knock them out as much as possible, too.

Its a common product you can get at any big box store. It was designed to kill mosquito larvae, but works for gnat/thripe larvae as well and is totally safe.

I basically put one in a bag and crushed it with a hammer, then applied to the medium before watering. I've also used an organic spray with Spinosad in it. Works well for the adults. Good luck.

Thanks. I'll check it out. Trying to stay away from anything that's reported to have a negative impact on soil or product, thus I'm ignoring my ample stash of Azamax.

I've been offered a 'better' deal on Gnatrol in the newer (to me) granular form. I used the liquid YEARS ago, but it's no longer available, apparently.

Still waiting to find out if the nematodes and Gnatrol are contra-indicated, as in, would harm/disable one or the other in contact with each other.

I'm assuming the mosquito dunks would be a threat to nematodes, so if they were used in any kind of sequence/team-work, it'd likely be nematodes first, then the mosquito dunks for the 'mop up.'

I've been fortunate to avoid spider mites and aphids, but the thrips and I have a history, and they can be damaging enough all on their own.

Thanks again.

HOLY SHIT!!!!!

Thanks for the link!!

The product at the link you posted, squall, has, as a primary active ingredient, B.t.i.; the same sub-species of organism as Gnatrol. How cool is that???!!!!

My guess is (at this time) there's a major difference in concentration of B.t.i. between the 2 products, as the 'dunks' are designed for a delayed release over a 30-day period, apparently, and the Gnatrol is mixed at less weight per gallon of H2O than the weight of the dunks.

But the purported area covered, per dunk, (100 sq. ft. ,if I recall what I read correctly), also lends itself to some interpretation, too.

I rarely even use bug dope any more (nasty stuff!!), I've never dabbled in 'Dunks' before, never had a mosquito magnet; just cohabitated with the buggers (mosquitos), as 4-5 months of the year they seem to run the place (*I suspect when the legislature adjourns, the mosquitos sit in their chairs and committee rooms, and make grave decisions on the direction Alaska will take, albeit with less detriment; they're -that- prevalent here).

Thanks again.

Home Depot prices them in a 2-pack for about $9 (I'm sure it's more up here; freight kills us).

And I suspect these will serve as a solid back-up when I'm in IMMEDIATE need.
