The truth is that much of our rural infrastructure needs to be upgraded.
The rural areas have always gotten short end of the stick and needed programs
such as rural electrification programs, to make things more even for them.
Sadly, we have had so much political dysfunction by intent that we no longer even have
the kind of programs that are needed to bring things up to speed so that everyone can have
a cheap and dependable phone and a decent internet connection.

Part 2 and a continuation of yesterday's content.

I agree with this, yet I will say that I have a dear friend who is a died in the wool libertarian, who
is a wonderful person that has repeatedly contributed much of worth to our society, and he continues to do
so to this day. The concept of painting with a broad brush has never worked well for me.

This wasn't any laughing matter. It hit hard here. Not much wind ,but it dumped 3 years of rain in 1day in my area. Trees were smashed down on the property there was damage.
Sorry that was the case for you. Here in Van Nuys we only got lots of rain which was desperately needed.
Wish there was a better means of using storms such as that to recharge the depleted natural aquifers in the area.

Man that sux . It must be worth living by the sea.
The earthquakes in california are overblown. One earthquake shook so bad we were knocked to the ground. When it started, I said I think that this is an earthquake .I think we should get out of the house. In my town at the time (Barstow) people pulled there mattress out in the yard inorder to sleep safely

Would imagine that the cost of replacing them repeatedly after the storms would cost more than just burying the damned things to start with. Not to even mention the effect on people of not being able to call on others for help when they may need it the most.

You can't blow a trillion a year on military and have sound infrastructure at the same time. It's just not economically feasible. And regardless of your "political" persuasions, it's ALL economics. They drill us as deep as they can drill and we take it right up the Southern opening..

It was no gulf of Mexico storm , but for out here it was a big deal . California was not prepared..Back east this is a regular deal.
yearly now at a minimum, might happen more often these days. Carolinas/Georgia getting more rain than they want... again. another tropical storm building that looks like it might find itself in the Gulf of Mexico now...that never works out well.:badday:

I recently found the work of a young man on youtube who delivers the history of medication, on a layman's
level that I find both interesting and informative. His name is Robert Kelly, and here is a link
to a recent posting:

The subject of depleted uranium was brought up recently.
Correct me if I am wrong here, but I if I recall correctly, it was originally envisioned for use if or when Europe was being overrun by Soviet Tanks.
When that was no longer considered a viable threat, we were left with a weapons systems
that had a good deal of money and political horsepower behind it.
My wife was a vet who like many was stuck doing several combat tours first in Bosnia, then in Iraq.
She was tasked with monitoring what our personal were being exposed to, and as
such, she was pretty well informed as to what was being used where.
She spoke to me a great deal about the use of DU, and the effect it was going to have
on those who were exposed to it.
She spoke of the kids who played in on and around the targets of DU, and she was
horrified of the downstream effects it would have on them later in life.
She knew better than to attempt to say anything about that to anyone but me.
She had earlier found that she was able to predict who was likely have complications
with one of the vaccines they were giving to those who headed over to Iraq.
She learned the hard way, as do all who serve, to keep silent on things of a sensitive nature.
It haunted her though, and she spoke to me frequently of it once she returned home.
I just saw the video below it is quite recent, but it took me back.
As I watch these, I can't help but consider what would have happened had things gone as projected:
Europe would have been heavily contaminated in the process of destroying Russian tanks.

Shown to our troops years ago:

Should you be curious what happened with my wife, she was given a variant of the lead or gold option.
She was told that if she ran her mouth, she would be discharged in such a way that she would never be able to work as a MD again.
She was at the same time, offered an increase in rank, and position along with quite a chunk of cash
to make a commitment with the reserves. She declined the offer and went to work with the LA county
health department. She earned less money than a manager at McDonald's, and I was immensely pleased with her values.
I lost her to H1N1 in 2014.
