this may have been true at a certain point in time, but the evidence suggests (STRONGLY!) that homo sapiens killed some species off by hunting. once we had spears, atlatls, bows etc and mastered stone point knapping, meat was much easier to come by. certain native american tribes followed the buffalo herds for a long time, and killed shitpots of them by stampeding them over cliffs (IE- "buffalo jumps" as archeologists called them) before they had those weapons. kind of hard to garden on the move...and difficult to grow enough/collect enough to make it through the winter. i have read some research suggesting that our evolution as humans was intertwined with our ability to kill meat to eat.
