It's obvious that every stride we have made in medicine, science, and other fields have improved the quality of life significantly. There are obviously people alive today that couldn't have survived 150 years ago. The real problem is everyone's disenfranchisement from our government and society. We live in a time when personal freedoms are constantly being taken away, people are being trained to think and act like puppets, and a general disregard for our environment and fellow man are reaching new highs.

I too am done with this thread for now. I don't enjoy contributing to threads after Stoned2Death has had a chance to wipe his butt with them. Until someone cleans house and escorts the trolls we have here out the door, there won't be a productive conversation about this kind of subject.

For two yrs I lived in a cabin 10' wide X 22' long, 1st yr I had no electric until I could afford to bring it in and never could I afford the deep well (my 120 acres was on a tall hill) that needed to be dug there as it would have been 400' plus in depth & appx. $6,000. BTW, no well = no septic! I painted my outhouse white & hung a sign, "Welcome to the White House North!" I finally got out of there but still live in the sticks far removed from most of the world. Where I live it is appx. 85-90 miles in between each of 3 McDonalds restaurants, imagine traveling 200 plus miles & seeing only 3 Mickey D's in that time and that's in the US! To go to the cinema I travel 75 miles round trip. Sam's Clubs that I like to visit are each 120 miles (240 roundtrip!) from my home. I could go on but I think you see where I'm coming from anyway.......

If you don't mind me asking do you think you could share some your experiences or just general info about living off the grid since you've done it? I live near the BWCA (boundary waters canoe area) of northern MN. Remote as can be in the lower 48 imo.

In the winter of '95/'96 we had an actual 60 below zero (for only 2 days) BEFORE wind chill factoring. It was so cold in my crib I actually pulled my bed right up to the woodstove, so close I worried about the stray sparks lighting up my bed, so cold that the dogs water froze on my floor. 60 below is so cold that you can throw a glass of warm water into the air (just the water, not the glass) and it INSTANTLY vaporized into 'steam'. It figures like this, regular room temp is 72F & water boils @ 212F, so I take from the microwave (no well, no hot water heater) a glass of hot water and go outside where the temp is 60 below (a 132 degree swing in temps) and toss the water in the air....... with a huge WHOOOOSH! it becomes a cloud! not frozen and falling to the ground, just a cloud that drifts away. In essence it boiled & turned to steam due to the exreme temp difference.

Living w/o electricity was interesting & toughed me up for sure. It gives a person time to reflect on the meaning of ones life, I caught up on reading of course, easy by daylight and at night it was generally an oil lamp or propane lamps I eventually installed on the walls. I hunted and fished for meals of course and became very good at it.

One Easter Sunday I was hoping to put on a meal for some friends but my meat locker was VERY low as there is very limited fishing & NO hunting of wild game from Dec. 31st until next seasons opened in the fall. I knew there was a flock of wild turkey nearby & I set out to bag one as illegal as it was. I found the turkeys on a gravel road that day (filling their gizzards w/ gravel to 'chew' their food) and was belly crawling through the snow when someone spotted me & knew I was hunting unlawfully, that SOB stopped and spooked off the birds by running them off into the woods, once spooked you won't get within a 1/2 mile of a turkey (wild turkey are NOT dumb like farm birds) and the hunt was off. Dejected I was heading home in my Blazer when suddenly a deer jumped out in front of my ride, it tried to stop in time but its head made it as far as my bumper! BOOM w/o even ruining any of the meat w/ a direct body hit that deer gave its life for the table....... Truly an Easter miracle and manna from heaven. If you looked at it from my side of life that was a true miracle my friends, it brought tears to my eyes.

I do like a simpler style of life, but some things I like too much to sacrafice for an older style of life. Such as music, the internet, porn, lsd, my longboard (although it got ran over), and so many other things. Plus girls didn't shave their legs back in the day.
