The Wussification of Boys

I see a lot of older people commenting in this thread, I'm assuming age based on all the critique's they are throwing around, condoning violence and hitting children or young adults as a means of letting them know about the old days.

Guess what. The old days are exactly that, gone, the past.

Did I grow up in Generation Grand Theft Auto? Nope, I'm 30, just barely missed it, but my generation as well was bombared with new technologies and ever more present marketing techniques by savvy companies promoting instant gratification through food, sex, and drugs.

Does that mean I get to sit on my high horse and watch the poor kids these days go through a type of mental cluster fuck I couldn't imagine?

You have the desensitization that's caused by not having personal social contact between peers, so places like facebook become breeding grounds for anynomous attacks and vicious rumors.

Remember the mother in the south that created a fake profile, befriended her daughters 12 year old neighbor, then drove that poor girl to suicide?

How about the kid in Rutgers that was having sex when his homophobic roomate filmed him and live streamed it across the internet?

You didn't have to deal with today's technologies and all the bullshit that has caught up with it.

What have we been fighting about since Roe Vs Wade in this country? Yes, its a woman's rights issue, but I see things a bit deeper than that.

Technology is moving faster than society can handle it, and our morals and values are still very much unclear, like the abortion debate.

How about stem cells?

Cloning people?

Shit, how about just vaccines, don't a large group of people believe it causes autism?

I rest my case. Stop judging these kids, you didn't have to grow up in this crazy society they do now, where the price for a college education means you have to sacrifice your financial security for ten years with no guarantee of a future.

The generation that was essentially ass raped for it's wealth.

The generation that needs understanding and guidance more than ever.

That being said, I'm glad I'm not part of it. whew!

boys being raised by single mothers...

^^ that too. Especially in African American communities where mandatory minimum sentencing essentially meant fathers were taken from neighborhoods for decades at a time.

steadydets, the things You say bout the changes that technology have brought to You, and The Younger generations are all very valid points.
I can not imagine NEVER getting away from the Bullies, and Assholes.

Each, and every generation has had to deal with a changing World Though.
The Quest for Material Success has driven each generation to re-prioritize to the point that a new boat, bigger house, better,,,, is more important than Family, and raising Well Rounded Humans has become just a façade, filled with feel good BULLSHIT.

When I was a Younger Man, and the Older Generation carried on like Your referring to, I too Just told Them they just could not understand what We had to deal with, and flipped Them The Bird.

Oh, and by the way You did NOT go through the things We did either, So Maybe in a decade, or so You will see that Our points were, and are still valid, as Yours are, and will be in the future.

Building a sense of Self on B S participation trophies is a bad model. No wonder it is so hard for these kids Who have been told that every little thing They do is just as good as the next Kid.

I think these parents watch to much of the "news" they think if they let their kid out of the house the kid is going to get kidnapped or something. Funny thing is that crime has gone way down in the last 30 years.

I got a neighbor who has his poor kid playing on is this tiny screened porch all the time, even though there is a big ass field right next door with a pond and woods ect.

I feel sorry for these kids.

...My crystal ball says computer/tech jobs will be nearly worthless in the next 20 years. How many tech-geeks can we have, before somebody has to pick up a hammer, and build something?
Those few kids that grew up with a tool belt, may well rule the world.
Disgusting, is the only word for it.

In Europe, and I'm sure in the US and other countries, the poor "underprivileged" eastern EU people are beginning to dominate the building-industry, they are the only ones willing to work for $6 an hour. Every industry-school is screaming for more students to learn their crafts, while the government is hiring thousands of cheap labors. While the same government is whining about low student counts, why no companies aren't willing to take in native just-out-of-school students. The hypochrasy

There is heavy patriarchal social modifications or manipulations going on, right under the noses of us all, few overstand this. Social, biochemical, geological, electromagnetic manipulation.

If one is not aware, it'll eat your time and life, before you know it. Skinny jeans is just a minor symptom of this, it's all caused by being unaware and dependant on the group and the mentality that follows with it, not being your own and nothing but nothingness and truth. I can follow you, and see how skinny jeans is femi to wear as a guy, but appearently some like to wear them and feel comfortable mushing their jewlry, so what are you going to do about it? Beat up everyone with skinny jeans? Or just let your own baggy denim sack as a silent statement and stay outta trouble?

But appearently it has to happen like this, and you and I can't do shit about it, kick and scream and beat kids up all you want, it'll make it worse, just let it flow and go into itself again, people will soon enough realize, and if they don't, can't do nothing about that, keep to yourself, do you, be that change you want to be and see.

I agree, steady makes some very good points; but you took the words right out of my fingertips: each generation has to deal with some crazy shit one way or another... what about the generation of children that had to deal with world war two? specially in europe, that beats any craziness brought upon the newer generations by technology by far.

But, this is not a competition...

As I said way earlier in the thread, my opinion is that each boy in each generation comes into manhood in his own terms, some later than others, and some really never do, not only in these newer generations but also in the older ones.

you see tons of wussies from the older generations, sitting on high thrones built with ignorance and prejudices and who never fought for shit; like the French lol....

See, this is where I think everyone needs to take a breath.

It is the human condition that allows us to think our personal experiences mean more and are more meaningful to everyone who lives in our world.

Do you not realize that you are repeating the words every single generation has repeated before you?

I'm not trying to insult you, what I'm trying to point out is that generation after generation, people use the same tired arguments. The same exact ones.

Could it be that as human beings, we lack the capacity to empathize with those younger than us, or maybe we lack a general understanding on what being in someone elses shoes are like.

My problem with the majority of these arguements are because they aren't quanitifiable.

Explaining it to me as "You haven't been there yet" is just nonsense because I'm not trying to teach anyone anything.

You know what I would do if I wanted to help these kids?

LISTEN.

Because it seems everyone else is just trying to tell them what to do.

Maybe if someone just listened to what they have to say, we would stop drugging them with Ritalin and disregarding their feelings as invalid.

We live in an age of spiritual crisis, where technology takes us further and further away from the human spirit.

Times are tough, we need all the empathy and understanding we can get in order to move forward without fear or judgment.

So Iraq was nothing? Kosovo? 9/11? the bombing of the USS Cole? The Gulf War?

Oklahoma City? The Unibomber?

AIDS? SARS?

Seriously guys, please, we can't talk about this inteliigently if we try to say one generations history is worth more than the others.

"They had it harder, or they did." That's just no excuse.

The topic at hand is the Wussification of Boys.

My theory is that the variables have never been more complex and in today's day in age, where homosexuality is finally being more socially accepted, of course there are going to be excess.

Look at Spain after Franco died. They went crazy with civil liberties and regional identification.

When you suffocate a voice for generations, don't be surprised that it shouts for decades afterwards to compensate.

Just one thing about Wussifcation by the way.

Don't you think it's odd that whenever we see a man crying on T.V., we automatically think, "What a little bitch".

Maybe it's time to change that a bit. Just a bit.

Not enough to play that game, just the tip :)

And just to be clear on one thing.

I may not personally know any of you, but I love you all the same.

I don't have many friends who smoke the way I do, shit actually, I don't have any friends that smoke the way I do. So even though we haven't met, I still feel a strong connection to other people who share in this singular human experience, our pain is always shared, collected and accepted.

Around my circle, they constantly judge me. If my career and reputation wasn't what it is, these people would judge me even more, and that hurts, because the only difference is that I don't drink and like to smoke instead.

But its the human condition to judge. Its the human condition to rank.

Its the human condition and societal norms that dictate we all run towards this imaginary ladder of success that doesn't exist.

There are more ways to measure the worth of a human life than how tough and strong you are.

If you can draw parallels between our discussion and my personal life experiences, please do. I wish they didn't judge me when I smoked. They say I'm doing a disservice to myself.

I didn't realize my behavior was that much of an issue for them...

It's cool though. Its not to me :)

I wish This would change.I am a very empathetic person. I frigging cry when when im Happy, sad, angry. I absoloutly cry during Our National Anthem.

Were saying these same things basically, and when I say that in a decade or so You'll understand, I am NOT trying to teach You anything. You are looking at the older Folks here with a distain bred of not feeling listened to by Us. You don't recognize that when I say that I can NOt imagine the World of Social media that does not allow for Kids to get away from Bullies. That I am expressing empathy.

steady You come off like Your the only one that gets it. While misunderstanding that were on the same page.
That is the last time I explain My Self to You steady.
Don't You see that when Your telling Folks shit like, Take a Breath, and cant We talk intelligently, That You are placing Yourself as The Authority.

I never felt insulted, as You assumed, either,,, until the statements just mentioned.

Peace; 1TT

I didn't mean to come across like that, even though I know I have a difficult type of attitude, very arrogant at times, it's one of my qualities I don't like at all. But it's extremely useful in the times of when I'm defending you, or your position, I could write till I'm blue :)

You are right, we do have more in common that we don't.

Civil discourse is the cornerstone of all intelligent society, and hopefully one day, I can have the type of patience you have when I'm talking to an arrogant 30 year old, little shit like me :)

I'm off to make lunch, see you guys in a few.

You're being a bit self righteous here. Yeah you're generation has a lot of bullshit to deal with but I can rattle off a gruesome list of things our generation (50-60 somethings) dealt with. Your generation has to worry about some fool with issues created by his imagination (VA Tech Shooter) but our generation had to deal with soldiers shooting us (Kent State). You guys had Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, we had Vietnam without the hi tech Armor and weapons your generation gets to play with. We also had race riots, Charles Manson, Presidential Assassinations. John Lennon being Murdered, etc. Your problems aren't better or worse though, they're just different. Each generations problems are different because they're a reflection of the time they grew up in and times are always changing.

The problem as I see it with this "Wussification" of Boys thing is it's a lot of the parents fault. They're the ones who push for a trophy just for participation. Most likely because they wanted a trophy when they were young and didn't get one? So they're bound and determined to make sure their kid has a better experience and so they work the system (complain to the proper boards, associations and politicians) and suddenly trophies are given to everyone. Parents need to stop trying so hard to make their kids' life easier. So what that parent didn't get a trophy, it made them powerful enough to bend boards, associations and politicians to their will. We need to stop making everything so easy. Like it or not the bad experiences in life are just as much learning experiences as the good ones. In fact I bet if you did a study you'd find that the lessons learned from bad experiences tend to be more firmly impressed upon us. So we don't repeat them too much. Also though, the bad experiences give meaning to the good ones. If everything is good and easy all the time then it's all the same, nothing to contrast it against. Plus once on their own, the first hardship life deals them they'll not know what to do and therefore fail.

Yea, Ken state was a tragedy. Not going to debate the histories of generations, I gave my reasoning before, there is no quantifiable way to compare and to me, it's mostly baseless posturing.

My theory is based on technology outpacing morality.

Yours is based on bad parenting stemming from the distribution of meaningless trophies and the dissolution of meritocracy.

If you believe your age has anything more valid and relevant, then you are free to believe that.

I suppose I just view things on a macro level.

Like that second paragraph you wrote about making things easier for this generation. I suppose you can diagnose an OBD-II (still a generation prior) ECU the same way you could a carburetor?

Or you can run a coal plant much in the same way you would a geo thermal facility?

Or perhaps an MBA was standard in your generation just to get a decent job as well?

I'm not quite sure where you see this easier life. Perhaps it is maybe your own human condition subconsciously trying to soothe your ego and tell you that your life was harder?

Or maybe a bit of humility is in order and realize we all occupy the same world.

It's cool though. You'll be dead soon. Before me, probably. I will soon follow right behind you.

Then another generation will repeat this same conversation.

And on it goes.......
