I’d like to think I am as prepared as I am going to get. I did my own generator install 15 years ago and I’m using a 20 horse Honda V twin motor pushing a 13 KW powerhead. I put two 500 gallons of LP underground so I should be in pretty good shape. Having my own well, keep as much water as I care for and what my livestock doesn’t produce my neighbors livestock will…
Good man. You are a lot better off than me. And I know better. However, I just replaced my furnace and A/C. The shock over the cost of that hasn't worn off yet. I do however need to do my due diligence. Only takes money.

I'm looking at moving, the area I'm at now is getting over run from people from the Twin City's bringing all their bullshit with. I'm on a lake now but the neighbors are all from the twins don't see them in the winter but you can tell when spring hits..
I built this cabin and there were a couple winters I wish I would've had a generator.
Next place will have , looked at something Monday going back Sunday to have a look-see inside.
Have a small lake in yard and the Woman Chain across the street.

I'm pretty well versed in the outdoors. I know how to shelter,
eat, drink, and stay warm out there and enjoy it. I've always relied on that as an oh crap plan. As my aches and pains of physical recreation and labour are becoming more of a lifestyle then an occasional guest, I'm working on plan B. The house and acres are my focus more these days. I'm in the process of learning about and applying permaculture to my land. I need to build 2 raised beds by Spring and then cleaning and expanding the orchard.

I've got solar but lack storage. That was an option we looked at when we got the Generac quote. When I'm ready to make another financial investment I will go with the generator over the storage.

With the Emerald Ash borer that went through here, I have enough firewood stacked for at least 2 years.

I need the heat from MH and HPS. Without them I would have to run the furnace more to keep the temps where I want them. In the summer venting outside keeps the basement cool enough. If it does get a bit to warm I just open a vent and cool things down with the a/c.
I used to vent the rooms thru the chimney and put a draft inducer on a 5section boiler I installed .

That sucks. With the growing strain on our power grid I am thinking more and more about a generator. I have heard that Honda makes good portable generator. I have my eye on a Honda EU3000. It is just a little over $2,000 and would do in a pinch.

The Generac whole house generator is pricey to say the least. I would love to have it but with instillation and all it is more than I want to spend right now.

If I knew I was gonna stay here I would be more likely to drop the coins. But, frankly this state is becoming less and less attractive for several reasons.
I agree ,I also have a honda 3000
That wasnt cheap then add $ for a gen-tran manual transfer on a job I did
It was good for us because we use propane for the stove ,dryer ,generator and now a 10 kw wall heater.
We also put in a 100 gal tank and had to repipe all the gas lines with galvanized replacing the 3/8 copper.

I also have a suitcase 1000 honda which is light and burns 3/4 a gal
I bought it used years ago.
Its easier to carry and use than setting up a cord
