The retail and wholesale prices of pot in Oregon are falling with the proliferation of producers and recreational marijuana shops, according to an analysis by a state economist.
“The biggest thing is just competition,” said Josh Lehner, an economist with the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis in Salem. “As we get more stores, as we get more growers, (as we get) more processors, it becomes a price competition. Prices start to fall, particularly when supply is outpacing demand or supply is ramping up faster than *demand is growing.”

Pot prices in Oregon are *falling up to 20 percent a year, Lehner said. And he expects the prices to continue to drop.
As prices plummet, marijuana stores are competing to offer the best deals, said Greg Adrianse, the owner of New Millennium, a pot shop at 2893 Oak St.
“Everybody wants to get those customers in, and if the customers can get a better deal elsewhere, they are going to go there,” he said.
Marijuana prices listed online by pot shops in *Eugene and Springfield vary greatly, with differences in potency, quality and availability all likely affecting the sale price.
Retail pot prices can be as low as $2 for a *single gram, or even less if a *customer is buying a larger amount — for example, an ounce, or 28 grams, for $50, or $1.78 a gram.

Lehner found that the average retail price for recreational marijuana in Oregon late last year was slightly less than $7 per gram, down from nearly $10 just months prior.
Continually *declining pot prices are “everything a consumer” wants, *Lehner said.

Fake news. $50 an OUNCE at the pound price wholesale level is $800 a pound for crappy OUTS. Which is not news. Also the lowest prices quoted are for TRIM leaf sold to processors. But help fan the flames!

UPDATE on this story (stupid phucks at MBD):

(This story has been updated from an earlier version to clarify that these falling prices refer to trim and outdoor-grown flower sold to produce cannabis oil.)

The above from:
https://mjbizdaily.com/decimated-oversupply-oregons-wholesale-marijuana-prices-drop-50-pound/

I'd also point out that the source for this viral post is Aviv Hadar, who has a vested interest in having people not be in this business. So if you think you can make it work, don't let him scare you off. Everything is not roses and sunshine at his company as they recently parted ways with their lead grower and partner. It was a not so pleasant break with both of them airing out grievances on social media. Which necessitated a "corporate" style apology with the fake "we wish him all the best" response. This after Aviv said, "Literally every single thing in the company runs better without him. Some people should just stick to two lights and a tent. Don't forget that Hunter, Kevin, and I built every single facility Justin EVER cultivated cannabis in...." While there might be some truth in this, it's clearly an over exaggeration. So I'd take it all with a grain of salt.

Do I think you can sell 2000+ units of outs as flower for the shelves. Probably not. Can you sell a few hundred. I do think you could, if you tick all the other necessary boxes. Branding, marketing, netowrking, professionalism, superior product, and competitive price. How well you do those other things will make the difference between being able to sell 50 units or 500 units.

Carpetbagger with big money moves to Oregon from LA to found "Oregrown" and the local rubes seem surprised that he is circulating dishonest, self-serving propaganda.

Talstar is good stuff for mites, BUT NOT FOR USE ON ANY PLANTS that people consume. I use it on my indoor grow areas and to clean up bugs in the greenhouses, for fleas around my house, and on bamboo for bamboo mite control. But I do not consume the bamboo in any way, or feed it to the sheep next door if I spray it. WTF are these morons doing putting shit like this in Aza products?

BTW, once Talstar is dry it is OK to come in contact with surfaces sprayed with it. But when spraying it, you need to suit up and wear a pesticide rated (purple) respirator. Of course it is not supposed to be in Azamax, and hence if I had any Azamax, which I do not, I would be suing that company into extinction. Also makes you winder what these people are putting into pesticide bottles.

And pot retailers still cannot get their shit together when it comes to checking IDs. Its simple really, as minor decoys cannot lie about their age or if they can legally buy pot. The question to ask is: "Are you old enough to legally buy marijuana?" Or "Are you over 21 years of age?" Anything other than "yes," and refuse entry. They are coached to say things like, "Do I look old enough?" And of course they have to have a legal ID and you have to be able to read a drivers license or ID card and be able to see if they are old enough. IS THAT ROCKET SCIENCE PEOPLE? Hello? These failing assholes will wind up getting weed banned and prosecuted by the feds for selling to minors. Mainly because people are just too stupid (or too stoned?).

The same thing happens with liquor sales in retail stores and bars, restaurants and taverns. But the feds are not after that any more, some 85 years after prohibition ended.

From the OLCC..................................................................................................................................................................

Portland, OR -- The Oregon Liquor Control Commission conducted recreational marijuana minor decoy operations across Oregon during January 2018, and in many areas of the state licensed marijuana retailers did not sell marijuana products to minors.
The statewide compliance rate in January 2018 was 89 percent. During minor decoy operations in December 2017, the statewide compliance rate was 81 percent.
“These results show an improvement, but there is no tolerance for marijuana sales to anyone under 21 years old,” said Steve Marks, Executive Director of the OLCC. “We’ve increased the penalties for retailers that sell to minors, so our expectation is for the industry to be vigilant about compliance.”
OLCC inspectors working with minor decoys carried out operations in the following regions:

  • On January 17, 2018, in the cities of Salem, Independence, Monmouth, McMinnville, Newberg and Dundee, marijuana inspectors visited 26 licensed marijuana retailers, and two (2) failed a check for prohibiting sales to a minor volunteer. Compliance rate: 92%
  • On January 18, 2018, in Portland, marijuana inspectors visited ten (10) licensed marijuana retailers, and four (4) failed a check for prohibiting sales to a minor volunteer. Compliance rate: 60%
  • On January 19, 2018, in the Eugene-Springfield area, marijuana inspectors visited 16 licensed marijuana retailers, and two (2) failed a check for prohibiting sales to a minor volunteer. Compliance rate: 88%
  • On January 24, 2017, in Pendleton and The Dalles [Bend region], marijuana inspectors visited eight (8) licensed marijuana retailers, and none (0) failed a check for prohibiting sales to a minor volunteer. Compliance rate: 100%
  • On January 26, 2018, in Josephine County [Medford region], marijuana inspectors visited 10 licensed marijuana retailers, and none (0) failed a check for prohibiting sales to a minor volunteer. Compliance rate: 100%
In January 2018 the OLCC stiffened the penalty for the first time sale of marijuana to a minor to a 30-day license suspension or a fine of $4,950. The temporary rule that increased the penalty took effect January 26, 2018.
Selling marijuana to a minor is an OLCC Category II (b) Recreational Marijuana Sanction (OAR 845-025-8590). The penalties for multiple violations will also increase. Two violations in a two-year period would result in an automatic 30-day license suspension; three violations in a two-year period would result in a license revocation.
The OLCC conducts the decoy operations to make sure marijuana licensees are complying with state laws and OLCC regulations to keep minors from entering licensed retail businesses to purchase marijuana products.
During the sales checks, a minor volunteer attempts to enter a licensed marijuana retailer and/or purchase marijuana products from a licensed business to see if staff are checking ID’s correctly and refusing entry to anyone under 21. Commission inspectors supervise the minor volunteers. The volunteers carry their own legal ID that identifies them as under 21 and do not disguise their age or lie to encourage the sale of marijuana. The Oregon Driver license for a minor carries a red border around the picture with the words “Under 21 until” followed by the date of his/her 21st birthday.
The OLCC tests licensed marijuana businesses throughout the year, with each licensed retailer receiving a minimum of one visit per year.
The OLCC offers a free training course on how to check ID’s and identify false identification. Licensed marijuana retailers can learn more at www.marijuana.oregon.gov (under Recreational Marijuana Sales) or by contacting [email protected]

(The rest of this BS snipped... )

Yes, this story has come out in the Register Guard, on the web, and at other places in the past week. I do not know where this "state economist" gets his or her information, but it does not reflect what I am seeing in the local marketplace. Funny how the source is some anonymous generic "state" figure.

Spot prices in Colorado and Washington state are where the prices are exceptionally low right now. But stir the shit they will. Force prices down, force small retailers and growers out of business, let big business move in and take over, and then watch as prices climb sky high. Happens every time with everything.

Hello All,

Can any of you Oregonians fill me in on the status of the "CBD only" cannabis market? I may be spending a significant amount of time out there in the coming months and have a friend starting a business in this market. Is there a market for quality organic CBD strains/extracts, or is it all just being shipped elsewhere, as from what I understand CBD oil is legal throughout the country? Thanks!

Best,

Excellent man, thanks for that link.

My friend has had multiple meetings with the owner of a dispensary chain in PDX and apparently this owner claims that high-quality, organic CBD product is hard to come by. From a casual perusal it seems that lots of your bud is flooded with chemicals and other dogshit from out-of-towners and enterprisers who are ruining the industry trying to make a quick buck. The market might be saturated, but if it's saturated with nothing but dogshit, I see that as a good opportunity. Looking forward to checking out the thread. I'm planning on moving out very shortly. Puff a tasty one for me, I'm jonesing. Thanks again. Peace.

As far as I know, Oregon has some of the strictest pesticide/contaminate testing in the U.S. for legal weed. I have no idea what happens with hemp and it's by-products.

lmao, the oregon market is flooded with dank nugs, high low primo cbd and high thc, you are just another greedy grabber trimigrant coming to oregon to fail. if you don't have a few hundred thousand to invest best to stay away, maybe go to AZ, or Nevada that truly has more opportunity for growers than here.

weeed sells for 400 - 600 a lb now, old school mexi prices here, indoor 800- 1000 maybe
don't believe all the liars saying 1600 - 2300/lb, that's def fake news and big lies

OREGON IS FLOODED WITH WEED FLOODED

how do I say it FLODDED with WEED

as to pesticides you are off your fucking rocker, show proof.

you read a news article about Cali market being pesticided, Yes Calis weed is testing high in pesticides, nd then mis read and apply it here to Oregon, you are a fucking looser and joke.

Oregons weed I'd say is the cleanest when it comes to the OMMP and Rec markets better than CO and CA.

the illegal diversion market here def flooded with pesticieded nugs big time.

you want to buy and divert go ahead that's where the cash is...take your poisons and get the f out of here.

Thanks for the post, perhaps I should have been less assertive and more clear. I obviously don't know anything about the "scene" which is why I'm posting here. I'm not "greedy" or a "trimmigrant". I'm just a young guy who enjoys good pot and a beautiful place. I can hunt, fish, and pick morels here where I live, but the snowboarding sure is better out there. It is not my personal intention to be the next Ed Rosenthal or jump into Oregon and act like I'm gonna be some badass dank nugs bro grower and become rich, far from it, and I'll never be.

From what little I've read online I have come across articles and posts RE: pesticides, etc., but obviously I don't know, and imagine it's to be expected when any Wal-Mart grower steps into the scene. So thanks for clarifying.

You west coast weed nerds have the right to be skeptical of any out of towner, but again, I'm looking for a new place and a new life. I can keep growing good weed indoors and outdoors here on the east coast and get much better prices for it than I'd obviously ever get out in Oregon.

My friend is growing CBD product (from what I understand, less than 0.03% THC -- hemp -- according to Oregon law) , most of which will be extracted and sold elsewhere for what little profit that's worth. I'm not even interested in diverting product because I don't want to live that way. I don't need much.

Appreciate the reply, but for a bunch of stoners, lots of you west coast dudes have your fuckin' back up. I'll be the only guy in Portland flying the starts and bars. Later.
