The Official Hempy Bucket Thread

I recently harvested my first hempy bucket and I am currently running my second go at hempy buckets. Both in 2.5 Gallon buckets. I could clearly see better growth, vigor and bigger fan leaves compare to plastic pots, however after the harvest I took out the medium and noticed hardly any roots in the perlite reservoir.

Why would this happen? Overwatering? I did allow quite a bit of overflow every day with watering to try and keep the reservoir water fresh and not allowing it to dry out. Was this the mistake?

In my exp there is no need for perlite in the rez .
Contrary to what Hempy says its not necessary .

I have run coco Hempy Buckets with perlite in the rez and seen the same thing . A minimal amount of roots in the perlite . The coco was chock full of roots .
After seeing it a cpl of rounds I swapped to coco only and had no problems .

I water to over flow every 2nd day .

Thanks for sharin

Thanks for the feedback EB. Good to hear others have experienced the same things. Do you use chunky coco or put i siff infront of the hole?

I meant to say a screen, not a siff. :)

Another thing I've noticed is that the perlite breaks up and makes almost a cement like mush at the bottom off the res. That can't be good, i'm sure.

Just a hole .
Medium sized Perlite .Minimal amounts come out . After a cpl of waterings the perlite will settle and not come out the hole . Not a worry .

All coco Hempy Bucket in use .

Looks nice elmer. ☺️
I have some buckets that were just harvested. Some were all perlite, some were coco chips, some 50/50.
I'll yank the rootballs and compare them.
Fastest most vigorous were in straight perlite, but that could be strain dependant too... It all seems to do very well.

Straight perlite had more roots to the bottom, but not too many. The 50/50 had most of the roots in the top half of the buckets..
5 gallon is way too much. I'll probably fill them halfway next run.

I put about a half inch hole in the bottom of my Hempy buckets. Currently I use growstones but feel like I am losing some valuable growing area that would be better served with coco. My only fear is that coco would just pour out of the drainage hole, hence why I have used the large growstones. debating switching to Rockwool mini cubes in res so that roots can grow into the wool. Have you had any problems with coco falling out of the hole at all, or just initially?

If you use coco it should fill up with roots quickly and won't be going anywhere.....not much of a res at that point, but doesn't that happen with grow stones too? The roots filling the bottom anyways?

You could use a liner of some kind, landscape fabric or some mesh? Coco will form a slurry and it will pour right out of pots in volume but only if there's no downward pressure, say from a potted plant sitting on top......

I lost a good deal of coco in the ground rinsing some old coco out on the lawn in big buckets until I realized what was happening. It was floating around and running right out the bottom.

I don't see that happening in hempys

"Super easy method of growing" This method hasn't worked for me at eny time I have tried it with seeds or clones. I only have coco and perlite to use. Any help on this. My medium keeps drying out too fast then the seeds die. I do really want this method to work for me.

I guess ill try to find some time to read through all 454 pages which will be hard to do.
I can post pix of my set up if needed.

thanks.

That's interesting. I use solo cup hempts with perlite in the first 4 cm then the rest coco. Almost 100% success as long as I leave them be and don't try to experiment on them.

From the first post in this thread:

3 to 4 parts perlite to 1 part vermiculite. You can use volcanic rocks but personally I found the perlite / vermiculite a lot better in many ways.

Doesn't say use coco, growstones, rockwool cubes, or whatever, it's very specific in what to use. Deviate from pearlite/vermiculite and you takes your chances.

I followed the original design and it seems fine. The hardest part is choosing nutes, I settled on Maxibloom Lucus formula K.I.S.S. It has some problems, if you don't do enough runoff each watering you get salts building up in the mix and it eventually needs a flush. Watering from the top gets algae, so I use a funnel poke it in about 1/2" below the top because I hate fungus gnats.

The pearlite/vermiculte is reusable, rinse it and zap it, whilst still moist, in the microwave for a few min to sterilize the mix.
