Hey SOG, how do you use those ice cube trays, do you have the link on that too lol? Thanks again Guy!!
...you didn't see the link in my sig? ...lol.

An idea I had is to keep a mother plant vegging under low wattage, then cut a clone, root it, and place it in the hempy bucket. Id prefer 100% hydroton in the hempy bucket, which would be 2 gallons.

What kind of medium and container is best for keeping a mother plant long term with passive hydro? Will a hydroton hempy work? I wouldnt be against using a blend here since the medium wouldnt have to be changed, but the flowering bucket medium should be reusable.

It'd be used with maxibloom for nutrients.
...i use hydroton in the res and coco for the main medium, ...coco is reusable.

...thanks man and sorry for the 'not helpul', guilt by association.

....anyway, shoot me a pm and ill explain.

Peace, SOG

Thanks, I thought I read about someone using only hydroton. I've used a 3:1 perlite/vermiculite mix, but I have a hard time finding both, and I'd rather be able to reuse the medium. I figured I could put an actual wick in the hydroton if it dried out too fast.

Should work fine with wicks, and probably without as long as you water more often till the roots get to the bottom of the pot. I've got a 32 gallon trashcan full of hydroton, been thinking about trying... maybe cut it with perlite.

@capt trips....if you were to use more hydroton than perlite, would you suggest putting only perlite in the res or just a good mixture throughout?
@dansbuds....excellent as always!

I don't think having just perlite in the res would accomplish much with hydroton. The reason people do that with other medias like coco is so the coco doesn't get too soggy which is not a problem with hydroton. Having the perlite mixed up with hydroton might give you some wicking action tho, lol.

5 weeks into vegging, flipping in a few days

2 1/2 gal. or 3 gal. (can't remember) hempy buckets.

I decided to go with hydroton for the res. and 3:1 perlite/vermaculite mix for the rest of the bucket. Needless to say the growth rate is impressive once the roots hit the res.

I watered every day with weak nutes from the moment I transplanted the clones into the buckets. Now that they're at full strength and watered/fed anywhere from every day to every 3 days with no visible negative effects.

Hempy buckets are TOO easy and it's no fluke that this thread is hundreds of pages long. IT WORKS PEOPLE. If anyone is wanting to try this and confused by all the different combos that people suggest, I recommend following the original instructions and for the next run try different combos such as coco/perlite, coco/hydroton, etc.

For those that are still confused remember K.I.S.S.
1. container with drain hole made 1 in. to 2 in. from bottom
2. fill with 3:1 perlite/vermaculite
3. water daily with weak HYDRO nutes (medium won't retain water/nutes as well as soil) until roots hit bottom of container (plant will explode overnight)

Hope that helps anyone that was still confused. :tiphat:

I asked a couple pages back but no one answered, I am having some issues lately getting seeds to pop out of the media. They are germinating until about 1" of taproot is showing and then put into the cups. I had no issues before but this past week its nothing but problems :(

Should I water first with just plain water until they pop out of the cups or still use half strength lucas formula? I don't want to waste anymore beans :(

Hey oneshot, this isn't exactly an answer to your question but I just wanted to share how I'm trying out two seeds that just finished sprouting a taproot.

I took them off the damp paper towel and stuck the root into rockwool cubes, then I cut water bottles in half and cut holes on the bottom, filled with perlite, placed the rockwool on top, watered with just RO water, placed into a tupperware with a germination plastic sheet on top to keep in humidity and now I'm just waiting for roots to poke out from under the rockwool until I can transfer it into a larger hempy container.

Let me know what works for you.

Yeah... I always use straight R/O water on seeds.

Once the hull drops off the sprout I harden it to low humidity over 24 hours, Give em 1/4 str nutes and strong light. Next day they get 1/2 str nutes. 3rd day they get full strength nutes. I wouldn't try this with any nutrient profile but lucas. (edit: This is with seeds sprouted in a cup of hydroton with a 1" firm packed layer of perlite in the top of it, where the seed sits. The cup dries out once a day.)

Gosh my seedlings love me. LOL

A couple canopy shots as of last night. Little budlets are finally popping out.
Man, these things drink a lot of water ever day. About 1/3 gallon each.
Seems as though stretch has started to slow down a bit, luckily.
Im wondering if the Floranova bloom has too much nitrogen in it. Is it possible to switch to Maxi Bloom at this stage for less N ?

I quit using the FloraNova because it has synthetic chemicals in it. *shrug*

Yes, you can switch to MB.... anytime really. :)

Looking good :)

well if the medium is inert then I would think that it wouldn't matter....but poly chips? What happens over the course of a grow? I wouldn't use it, but that's just me.

Here is some more proof Hempy buckets & Lucas Formula = success.

This is my first time using Hempy too.

nice roots oneshot!

Thanks! Hopefully I didn't mess anything up during the transplant.

More Hempy root porn today. This is my BK clone at 3 weeks just taken.

The clear 2L is strictly for educational reasons. I wanted a visible way to observe how the Hempy system works, how the media handles water, and obviously root development. It's been wonderful. No algae issues either.
