so i am thinking about running some 45gal smartpots filled with coco... any advise on good mixes? and organic ferts to use when going this route? normally i do supersoil mix and brew teas in the 45s but i want to try some coco i think it will dry out quicker giving me more feeds and larger yielding plants

i dont know any exact mixes for using coco in organic handwatered grows, but my best bet would be to leave the coco UN-MIXED and water with organic nutes made for coco. thjis will give the best results. if you want the middle way, you can use coco as a soil amendment mixed with organic material, manure and compost etc, but it will not be as fast as pure coco with nutes in the water.

i use coco as a soil amendment in my veggie plot outside and its definetly better than NOT using it. fluffy soil means faster growing plants, but even so using pure coco and watering with nutes, the growth-rate and yields will be higher.

the biggest problem with handwatered hydro outdoors is the amount of nutes that needs to be used. it can easilly get very expensive :D also heat makes the coco dry out fast, it seems to evaporate water faster than a heavy clay rich soil, and the more u water, the more nutes you will have to buy.

also it should be clear - the more evaporation there is - the faster the EC levels might get out of hand. anyway, im sure with adecuate coco EC tests and flushing regularly should take care of that, but all in all there is various factors to have in mind.

search both topics you're looking for and you'll find the answers. I typed dyna gro coco and this came up on the first page, it will answer all your questions.

it might work with pebbles in the bottom of coco pots, but there is no real improvement by it.

i wouold say its not necesary, and waste of space that could be occupied by coco.

the roots can extend in coco far more than they can in hydroton/pebbles. even one inch more of coco can make a big difference when it comes to harvest time.

BUT still i think each should do the experiments necesary to determine what works best for them under their given environment.

Unless you are using coco hempys...then a coarse material in the rez is a plus.

Hello!!,
I am new to the Coco scene as well. I bought a bag of Roots Organic Coco Fiber Hydroponic Soiless Media, and transplanted some clones into solo cups filled with it. I thought I'd just dive in lol, but looking at the beginning of this thread-I need to learn a few things... I am wondering a couple things, what should I use for a ph? It says to use a ph of 5.5-6.5 on the bag. On the first page it says to use Nutrients for coco, am I using coco-or just a blend of coco? I have grown in soil before, and am on my second Hempy bucket. I am using Flairform's Greendream in soil, and Ionic in the Hempy bucket. It say's on the Flairform bottle that it can be used in soil, or hydro-can I use it with the coco fiber, or should I get specific coco nutes? Should I feed every watering? What about strength, work up to full strength like in Hempy bucket's? Sorry about all the questions... Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

Thats a loaded question . quik reply depends on type and strain, sativas can take up to 120 days (4 months),Indicas as little as 45-50 days if done proper, early finisher.reasearch the site u got the beans from and look up all the specs, it will give you a idea on flower length. Just read more jay, ICM has all the answers in some form or another. FH:peacock:

I looked on the Flairform bottle again, and I can use that brand of nutrients in coco. I am still wondering on how to go about using the Roots Organic Coco Fiber Hydroponic Soiless Media though. Feeding, every/every other time, strength? Ph? Thanks guy's!!

It's just another brand/style of coco. So, you treat them all pretty much the same.. feed everyday.. pH around 6.. there's tons of information in this thread. An hour of reading will answer all your questions.

I missed the Hempy bucket part in your original post.. I'm not familiar with Hempys, so I haven't got any advice. Maybe ask in the Hempy thread.

After some reading, I saw that you shouldn't let your coco dry out some-like in soil. I also saw that you should try to feed at least once per day, but I also saw some feed twice per day-is it better to feed more than once per day?
I am also wondering if a smaller, or a larger pot would work better in coco?
Does anyone have a rough PPM scale on what to feed a clone, in veg, and in flower? I havent used the PPM part of my Nutradip meter before, and am hearing it is very helpful when in coco..... Thanks again for your help guy's!!
