Why didn't you do holes or trenches? I'd be out of containers and in the ground quick like if I had native soil alongside the river to work with. Doesn't get much better.

I wonder the same,
i can understand a year in large containers to get things going,
but after that why not just use that soil and local soil etc to move into growing directly in the ground , its a lot easier , the plants would prefer it and you dont have to spend a bunch of money on new soil..

I dont see a lot of mulch on many folks plants , seems essential to me, but many leave their soil bare , with a surface rooting plant that just doesn't make sense ... Its vital to keep that few inches of top soil cool and not too dry, the amount of life between a layer of hay and the soil is remarkable , without the mulch , their is little life on the top of that dry bare soil ...

It's not as easy as ya think, I just do the best I can

You do a great job pono ,,
i always admire your garden ,,
just sometimes wonder about improvements that can be made, we can always do better, look how far we (you guys) have come already...

I think we have to prepare for full legality in the future ,
and competing against good farmers that are born and bred on a farm, isnt going to be easy...

Nice gardens y'all.

I believe it's all about timing with the Bt. Gotta hit em on the full moons starting late August. Reapply after rain. I only sprayed twice. 2 full moons. Surrounded by oaks.. at 1,000 ft.. I've only found a half a dozen cats. They've been tiny. And dead.

I like to use Dipel dry flowable.

Terreplenish for PM preventative and treatment.

Is there any systemic effect of bt watered in to the roots? I put mosquiito dunks in my tanks for other obvious reasons but also use dipel in my foliar and rarely see cats. Not a single one this year.

Bt isn't systemic. Surface coverage is key so I spray with a good amount of yucca or coco wet. I'm sure monsanto will eventually make Bt canna if they haven't already. They'll transform the gene into the plants genome, then the protein will be produced in the plants tissue so they won't have to spray it. Just as it is with corn.

Some of this makes sense. Nobody talks about the reproductive cycle of moths. They want the majority of their offspring to hatch on full moons. So if you spray on full moons, you will kill the freshly hatched worms. This is huge.

However, moths can fly up to 5 miles from where they hatch. So spraying twice a season isn't near enough. Those two sprays may take care of local cats, but the cats that travel will need continued prenative sprays. Also, cats have to eat BT, spinosad ext, so if they fly from miles away you have to have fresh liquid BT for them to eat. If not, they will start laying more eggs.

So I agree with your full moon spraying, but you need more than that to control cats, IMO. You guys should see my greenhouse without the ridge vent. You can hear a hum from all the moths, yet I have super limited damage to my buds....so far.....knock on wood.

They don't hatch on full moon. Look back at my posts I think they hatched mid September. I put all the eggs i found in a Tupperware and watched them hatch out. About 10 egg clusters from different trees and they all hatched within a couple day of each other. The incubation time is 10 to 12 days so I think they were laid around the last day of full moon.

http://vric.ucdavis.edu/pdf/Pests/pests_CornEarworms.pdf

"Nocturnal behavior of the adult corn earworm is related to the amount of light. During a full
moon, the moths stop mating and laying eggs. So, for about a week after a full moon, the larval
population w ill be at a low level. When the new moon appears, mating increases, and the larval
population peaks about two weeks after the full moon. The adult moths are nocturnal, feeding,
mating, and laying eggs at night."

Same for many species of moths.

No problem at all. This isn't a rule of thumb. I was just backing up what I said. I take nothing away from what you said.

Personally, I don't think I could live in a world where caterpillars only fuck on a schedule. Kind of like an old married couple that needs to schedule there sexy time, lol.

Good to see your still around Pono. I have a friend that lives in your valley that I plan on meeting up with soon. Maybe I will hit you up first. Take it easy.

Ok just went back and checked my posts, I found all the eggs between the 21st and 22nd, the started hatching out the 23rd.

Full moon was the 27th. Not too far off..

And I'm just sharing what I've observed personally as well. If your pressures are high then obviously I agree that repeated applications and alternating products/increasing biodiversity of predatory insects will do you good. My full moon spray approach is a minimum recommendation. Also, I don't take Ceps comment about using a spreader lightly. A good surfactant will increase effectiveness dramatically.

Best of luck on the final stretch here.

About 2/3rd full and 10 to 30 min cycle. Drier the better so that the leaves easily flake off. I prefer to do a light(10 min) and then pay $30 to $120 for touch up depending on difficulty. Sometimes touch up can be omitted for a buyer wanting to pay a buck less or so. Grinds the trim up perfectly for processing.
