I really appreciate people sharing their watering experiences. It is interesting to see the variation that successful growers display in their watering techniques. I'm still just watching, listening, and trying to be patient between waterings. I have a few inches of straw on top of my soil, and I like to wait until the soil underneath starts to feel powdery-damp.

But I really don't know. Thanks to others for sharing what they've seen.

Greengoldylox I can tell you right now that if I did not water at the level I am now, my plants would be wilting and eventually be dead. I came out with 10 and 20 gallon "starts" and have been in since early May..My 300s are nearly root bound and absorbing a shit load of water. I agree that there are plants bigger than mine, but a larger plant drinking less water just doesn't make sense to me unless you have a weak root system or a diseased one... Also what are you calling bigger? More stem? I am only interested in budsites not cordage!

If you're thinking that I have been watering like this all year you're gravely mistaken. It is only the last 2 weeks or so since I have turned my lights off and triggered my field that they have been drinking water like it is going out of style.

The bio-fungicides got put in to play BEFORE a problem could arise and none have. The plants in my field were started in early March...A little too early ..When they get old they also get tired and become more susceptible to problems so I will take an ounce of prevention on the nose to avoid a pound of cure out of my pocket.

Also as others have posted, maybe you need to re-read this thread and its tone and conversations but no one attacks any one and we all help each other to grow big trees...So please contribute some pictures and let us know how you're doing things.

So many variables... root medium, weather, genetics, stage of growth etc.

As an outdoor noob, watering is definitely what I've been the least sure about. In ground is tricky, where overwatering big pots could simply be called flushing! :D

Lovin it outdoors tho! ;)

Just a comment about watering. Everyones watering needs will be different, anyone that knows anything about growing knows that it depends on the weather, the size of your plant and what medium you are growing in. This is my stuff, it's grown in a "hedge" fashion, 14 plants, 10 foot long, 4 feet wide 4.5 feet high. I am at 37 degrees latitude, it gets 90 to a 100 everyday. I have mine on a drip system with 2 and 3 gph emmiters. I water once a week starting at 8:00pm and end at 8:00 am. You can see the complete garden in video if you look at my sig. And all of you with those big ass plants, rock on my brothers and sisters!

How long do you run that emitter line? I am watering my 300s every other day at this point with almost 40 gallons and inbetween hitting them with 10-15 ...?

I'm watering just about the same in 300's. No way I'm over watering as Ive dug down to the bottom to check repeatedly. 2-4 12" starts per put out just before full moon in june rather than big singles put out in may. Will be bumping it up soon I suspect too.

Ol' Betsy (I absolutely love this plant. Will always have a place in my garden.)

Looking forward to seeing both the OG/Rancher and the MK Ultra. Think I told ya before, buddy of mine had a good MK Ultra that just was a beast and made VERY OG nugs...The smell to me was just extremely Trainwreck-ish. Hopefully yours comes out similar with a more OG type nose.

Any nug shots of the OG/Rancher? What makes it a keeper?
.

I'll throw up some shots for you later. I already know the nug is great as i got it from people who grow the hell out of it and I have had it from a couple of different harvests. Sometimes it comes down tasting just like SFV OG and other times it has had it own sour thing going on in addition... the plants I have finishing up seem to be in the latter category. They have the greasy OG fuel but also have something brightly sour. Its cola structure is just like Sour D, but intstead of going 75 days, its done in about 56 (under 12 hours of full sun, which I am convinced speeds things up as compared to their indoor timing) She produces rock hard nug like the fire OG. She gets big and stretches huge. She also triggers fast and easy. This can be tricky (we had a round of 3 fingered leaves indicating some veg-stretch confusion IMO) but its wicked in the black box. She also handles the humidity in the covered boxes better than than the other strains she shares space with: Chem D, Fire OG, SD...

take my first post for whatever you would like, but saying something thrives with such a huge window is silly to me. your aggressive overwatering seems to show how lacking of advantageous situations it creates. no wonder to me you need to use bio fungicides at all. i would also be stocked up if i were in said position.

your plants look very nice tgold, but plants put out early june and treated with much less water yet having equal water holding capacity medium are significantly larger than yours and require much less water. my brix is right on also.

if u would like a pic id love to share, but lets discuss these simple things first?

Glad I'm not the only one to take issue, but that tone don't fly in this thread. Its perfectly valid to disagree with TG's methods, or mine for that matter, but the way you said it rubbed even me the wrong way... and I know TG doesn;t need anybody to defend him.

im also interested in this underwatering/overwatering....i saw the symptoms first hand in another garden and found it pretty hard to tell what they needed....id like to know what people estimate they are watering per 200 gal...my friends only doing around 5-10 every other day and im wondering if thats stunting growth we dont have signs of overwatering though they look really healthy...heading back up to see them soon..

I gave my plants a full hour this morning. They were completely dried out. totally pinned dry on a Control Wizard ph8 at all depths. I don;t know what % saturation that means.

That is 25 gallons for a 200 and 35 for 300 gallon pots. We'll see how long it takes for them to dry out. I also run a very fluffy, high perlite soil mixture. Its got 8cf per 200 gallons. Fast drainage plays a roll.

Its going to be different for everybody... I have seen both huge yields off a small plants and shite yields off big ones. yay high and yay wide can mean a lot of things come harvest.

Control Wizard

Im glad to hear that im not the only one using a Control Wizard. I pin all around the plants, and obey the meter. I had to stop my impulse watering. I used to overwater, and under fertilize. Now I give them water when it says so and fertilize every watering on most Kush plants, and every other watering on Hazes and sativas.

I would love to hear what your brix levels are. And would you mind telling what meter you use and a brief description of your methods. Our plants tend to run around 12...I would love to be able to get it higher.

I would also like to hear your philosophy on watering.

hey yosemite, i appreciate you addressing me like an adult, yet still being speculative and interested in how/what i think :tiphat:

regarding brix, until i hit this thread a WHILE back, in all honesty i hadn't even properly understood what it meant. my knowledge is nearly limited to what tom, trinity and nomaad discussed several pages back..i just copied those methods.my numbers come in right around yours, slightly higher and lower depending on how/when i take samples.i suppose the way i worded my first post i came across like i had the end all answer to brix levels. i dont, im just very satisfied by the rate my plants are correctly uptaking and my readings are stable at least. based on my understanding, i describe that as right on.

regarding watering, im still in shock at the amounts some ppl water plants. they obviously are not failing, as the plants produced are nothing short of excellent. lets note excellent and ideal or perfect aren't the same word here.

i use quite alot of mulch on my work. now looking back i see lots of the "heavy hitters" not doing so. which really shocks me, as mulching is a simple and key component of growing large killer plants.

overusing perlite (which is a newbie component to soil structure) aka garbage. is a huge mistake being made. with far superior alternates within the price range and readily available looked over.

do i have perlite in the medium of some of my plants? sure, ive used alotta bagged soil, sometimes projects need to be banged out. is that what id do/what i do with plants i care about? heh, come on?

lets talk about products that provide aeration to the medium, yet are still able to hold food/water.huh/what/? yah.those. no, not vermiculite

tomorrow i will post a picture of a ogbubba in 150 gallons of soil that has only had max 80 gallons of water this year, with a very aereated medium. this picture isn't what i speak of when saying "significantly larger" than tgolds plants...its showing the amount of small space im taking up and getting max amount of cannabis. im not saving cords of wood either lol.

i will also post a sour diesel cross that is larger than any of the plants ive seen posted by tgold. it has recieved less than 200 gallons of water this year and wont recieve nearly that much more.

note that i intially didn't make that post to make fun of the size of his plants. i see them as very well trained and full of tops. im making a point regarding water. i realize its cheap/free. im just talking about a relatively important topic this time of year.

to all those talking about my tone in this thread and honor etc.you have already lost. stop posting methods that are so flawed when so many members are copying what you are doing. i realize "we are all figuring this out together", but i prefer to be realistic, some of us dont figure things out very well/at all.

note: if my post count limits my ability to post pics tomorrow, make sure to say im full of shit because of my lack of evidence and :artist: :blowbubbles:

i have lots more to say, get the feeling quickly that its not wanted though. thats fine though, feeling okay here.

Regardless if you have lots of great info, you still come off like a dick. You could be the best grower in the world, but if your rude and unfriendly people won't like you. You say people who commented on your tone or attitude have already lost? What did we lose at? I think most of the growers in this thread are doing ok,myself included.

id like to start by saying i appreciate your open mind and posts always, as i have read all of them. i wasn't trying to rub anyone anyway. please take into consideration when you read my criticism of tgold a thing or thing. ive watched him go through a dozen handles since he was VERY YOUNG , over several boards/forums. i get you respect him, but if you had all the posts hes made archived, i have the feeling even you might get a chuckle or two nomaad. (notice i type this in a way not to attack anyone) yet i am not so soft to pretend the past didn't exist, especially such immediate past.

if i need to start bringing into play all the copy pastes tgold has pulled from toms initial writings and put them into his own context. by all means, i can hurt feelings. online even. if you havent seen that in your short time on the boards then. well i KNOW you have.

at that rate of PERLITE, a poor roll, not only is your aeration working against you, your wet dry cycle is killing your herd. i look at it like hitting the checkpoint in the video game everytime i water, compared to ignoring it, ATTEMPTING glory, only to die early and start the level over. if you can explain to me how the herd still thrives after a short period of your day is over the top of your soil is already dry, be my guest. if this were my method id also adopt growing chemmy weed and using no beneficial or organics to begin with . id rather quit my gig than do that though. please explain how this is advantageous other than a newbie easily fighting potential over water issues?

maad respect, just looking for good conversation and have a feeling you are of the few that could give it?

Its going to be different for everybody... I have seen both huge yields off a small plants and shite yields off big ones. yay high and yay wide can mean a lot of things come harvest.

how many people are going to write its going to be "different" for everyone. thats painfully obvious. lets use some common sense and compare japanese snow monkeys to japanese snow monkeys.

please read the quoted text by nomaad, as my response is some how imbedded in that. and if you all hate me etc etc whatever ill be happy to post my pics tomorrow and say good day.

i mean that you have lost my conversation, im sorry for not breaking it down.

i happen to think you are one of the best/open minded growers on here. im not trying to buddy up with anyone though. i hope anything i say is also picked apart. seems like an important part of this growing large plants deal.

im sorry for u if u think i come off as a dick, i respect your skills and dont think im the best grower in the world by any means. hopefully future posts will lead us into online understanding/'friendship'

btw you dont need to repost any of your beautiful pics to prove anything to me. i have checked for your updates on the daily since you joined icmag :thank you:

respect.

please let me get used to this format, im not trying to fuck up the format of this thread, both by what i say and how bad of a job i do of properly posting it. i promise by post 50 ill be just like you.

maybe thats what it is, you are new and do not have a ny street cred here...

why dont you start by asking some questions, getting some posts, and then maybe instruct us all how to grow.

until then sit back and watch magic happen.

PS i know this thread is long, but do we really need you to post 5 posts in a row? nah man chill out.

It's all good. I can get a bit defense of my crew as I mentioned in my rep+. Let's start out fresh.
As far as water. I do see what your getting at. In my opinion overwatering is the most common mistake growers make, beginners and experts alike. I actually switched my drip line this year from 1 gph to .5 gallons per hour in an attempt to conserve and use water more efficiently.
I do like a lot of perlite though. More wet and dry cycles means more chances to uptake nutrients and a lot more airflow. I've been fluctuating my water usage this year like crazy trying to get it dialed and give my plants whats best for them based on size, weather, stage of growth, etc.
Anyway,we're all interested in hearing what you have to say, maybe just try a say it in a kinder way in the future. Welcome to the site.

i should have known id have to take such a defensive standpoint with everyone. please know im just learning this and not trying to make my posts worthless ( i figure u agree considering some of my few posts i put a second or two of time into typing)

can i start by saying you are the most efficient grower on the forums im familiar with. or the best colorado grow documented outdoor. i now realize i approached this a tad "wrong"

i dont have any questions at the time though, my questions are answered in my day to day reading, which i appreciate getting alot of those answers from all of you......regarding post count.....yah okay ill work on that...maybe my lack of the english language makes me come off as more of a prick than my person is....heh:thank you:

please understand i have read every post you have made here and used them to my advantage in every way possible. id love to talk about watering with you, as based on what you just told me, u understand what my initial thought at least springs from (very well)

i dont feel really well right now, id love to discuss optimal watering and alternate aeration to perlite after i dont water in the morning (granted im feeling better)

i dont apologize at all, but if any of you were offended by how i initially came off....u shouldn't get offended and i hope u can work though whatever underlying issues there maybe. :comfort:

and i am NOT saying that you should be disrespected JUST because of your low post count. Just telling you from personal experience that its how it goes around here... i have an account with some real posts and rep jacked... i was sad. cause i thought i was cool. 4 green squares n shit :moon:

A good way to get posts up is to start a thread in the appropriate forum and when people ask questions, always answer them. you get posts and rep for being helpful. and ur being helpful... thats a triple BOOM!

looking forward to seeing what you got going!

and thanks man... i do not take that compliment lightly. I am only here to engage conversation and mutual education about conservation and locally sourced free materials... getting people thinking about what they have all around them!

oh and growing A+ with said free shit (literally shit)

EDIT: in response, but not to continue derailment of thread, you will run out of pic room VERY quickly until 50 posts, then it will seem limitless... when i switched accts, i learned very quickly it wasnt business as usual, ran out of pic space.
