Just my 2cents...I have always felt that Madonna gargles my balls.
Her genre is bubblegum pop, but I hate to give bubblegum a bad name like that, so I call it puke pop. Madonna...queen of the puke pop top 40.
I wouldn't do her with your junk! Sorry, I just can't stand that nasty old hoor.

Also, you can rock some rap, but rap aint rock.

i'd like to add a late edition to this list

David gilmour has released an album and DVD called Gdansk recorded in Poland
if you havn't heard it yet get it, Echoes is to die for, by far my favorite song taking over from comfortably Numb (now no 2 in my list of all time greats)

Gimour is a living god as far as i'm concerned

Tool - Lateralus

I came here to post Tool - Aenima :)

Both are exceptional, and Tool is by far the most talented band to come out in...well, probably since the beginning of rock. Maynards knowledge and incorporation of psychology is amazing[/]. His vocal ability is also top-notch.

With the best Drummer on Earth, an outstanding Bassist with one of the most highly sought after Bass tones.... It's just incredibly hard to hold a candle to Tool.

Very highly recommend the albums Aenima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days. Opiate and Undertow are also fantastic albums, but more, how can I say this? Undeveloped?

Beatles Revolver, Rage Against the Machine self titled first album, The Cars-The cars, Grateful Dead-Grateful Dead (skull n bones) and Live From Mars Hotel, Metallica-Ride the Lightning, Fleetwood Mac-Rumours, Pink Floyd-Wish you Were Here

and I know I must be the only man on earth that is partial to Zeppelin 3 over the others? 1 and 2 rule too...

soooooo hard to pik between those 2 metallica albums we all keep bringin up ...."ride the lightning" and "master of puppets".

my 1st intro was to master of puppets, and then to ride the lightning, and i was equally amazed...i chose master because thats what hooked me even tho lightning was older and a just as raw.

...hard to imagine how things would be if cliff burton was still around

I'm sure they would have still turned into the crap band they are today.. :p

Jason Newsted was also a very good bassist and he did fit in the band tone and style wise.

It's just that the singer and drummer are all about drama.

That being said, everything that they have ever touched after Black has been a prime example of trash. If it were just Kirk, Jason and another drummer besides Lars...I could probably listen to them, and believe me when I say the music wouldn't be the garbage they've been putting out since the Black album.

interesting choices ... for santana, i still love the early stuff, e.g. the first album (name?), "abraxis" ... for john mclaughlin i'd say "the inner mounting flame" ... what was the one with "dance of maya"? for sabbath ... "masters of reality".

Atom Heart Mother!

But Dark Side is good..... I guess... haha.

I could never single out a floyd album as my favorite. Though I can honestly say the wall isn't it.

~Abbie

was it something by Van Hallen?

i'm going for Hawkwind~In Search of Space,

it's a great album. Ok-it may not be technically great-but what it lacks in technique it more than makes up for with trippy psychadelic noises.

Some of you guys are mentioning truly great albums that should never be forgotten, but are pretty far off base when it comes to the general consensus of the "greatest rock album." First off you must round down the whole greatest band category. Because you cant have the greatest rock album without being arguably the greatest rock band. Lets round it down to our six most cited: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd and Metalica.
The Beatles: Generally, Sgt. Pepper is consitered to be their greatest record, but you could probably write a master's thesis on why any record after 'Help!' is superior.
Led Zeppelin: My vote is on II.
JHE: While "Are you Experienced" is supposed to be the definitive Experience, my money is on either Axis or Ladyland. While Axis gives me a more well rounded record feeling, Ladyland has a larger body of songs which are all amazing. Its sheer size might beat Axis.
Pink Floyd: Clearly, their most influential commercial success was 'darkside;' though I find PF fans who are musicians gravitate towards 'Piper' or 'Meddle.' I happen to like 'Animals' the best, but would never consider it 'the greatest rock album.'
Metalica: Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning? This one is such a close call I dont even know...
